So over the last ten years who has pushed music forward into new places? Who has showcased a unique voice? Who is an artist? Who makes art? Who has a hunger for the new?

My nominations

Amy Winehouse - clearly a confessional artist with a great voice.

Joanna Newsom - brings comforting folk music from the fringes

Bat for Lashes - a great ear for percussion and a celtic

Beyonce - reletlessly artistic. Stay away from the ballads though

Nelly Furtado - Simply for the variety.

Britney Spears or Lady Gaga have done the most cultivating to pop culture when we look at the past ten years. I would say Beyonce has as well, I don't care for her at all but denying her presence (like people do with Britney) is ignorant.

What has Britney done? Release some singles written by someone else? There are countless women who have done that.

xfactor guy..can you give reasons for your choices?

I'd go with Beyonce frankly. Much to early for it to be GaGa, if she's still selling in similar numbers in a few years time but now, no..

Do you really think that having writing credits on a song makes or breaks your credibility in the world of pop? Even though she was wrote several of her own songs. Britney Spears not only was a cultural phenomenon she also changed the world of pop music. If you deny that you are really just dense.

And by saying this I'm not saying Britney is an acclaimed lyricist or producer. But to think she has nothing to do with the huge success of her own career, is stupid.

She doesn't sing live though, she mimes, no one can call themselves or be called the queen of music when they don't sing live

Atleast she is upfront about it. Many other artists just use pre-recorded vocals. Does that better tickle your fancy?

It still tarnishes her career badly

Would some of the greats of the past have mimed ? Janis Joplin, Dusty Springfield, Marianne Faithfull, Kate Bush, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez etc ? they would have rather slit their own throats than ever sing anything other than for real so anyone who mimes isn't fit to hold a candle to the likes of them

Alot of those were is the 60's and 70's... even Britney didnt start lip syncing parts of her set until about 2002. And she doesn't lip sync everything... but trust me I do see where you are coming from with it. But it doesn't change the fact the power she holds in the world of music.

Lady GaGa for pushing the boundaries of pop music whilst keeping it sounding fresh, current and popular. Who else from all these female artists would appear on The X Factor performing inside an oversized bathtub? :D You have to admit she's very imaginative compared to most other solo female artists.

There's no denying Britney is a big star, but I don't think it's really deserved at all. I know all her fanatics are going to jump on me but she really could be anyone (at least these days now she can't even dance). She can't sing whatsoever (she's on about the same level as Rachel Stevens and Holly Valance vocally, just so happens she's a bigger name), she mimes on tour (I've always had a problem with that BTW), she gets her material handed to her on a plate, she's effectively told what to do and doesn't seem to have any sort of personality, a bit like a robot. She does release fantastic pop songs regularly but only because they're given to her by big name producers and writers, it's not as if she has anything to do with that. She was pretty good in the early stages of her career I'll admit, and I did really like her back when I was about 13.

The thing that really annoys me is she gets away with miming when other artists are crucified for it because it's her, or people should be used to it from her.

In 2005 on Cool Clarity someone posted a thread asking who was better; Ciara or Amerie? I posted Rihanna.

Who has been the most successful since? ^_^ So yes, for no other reason than that I also choose Rihanna. 10 weeks at no. 1 in the UK with 'Umbrella', albeit low(ish) sales and no competition from other new releases is still a fantastic acheivement.

What has Rihanna bought to the table that is new or groundbreaking though ? sure she is successful but she does nothing that 100 others don't do albeit more successfully than most, she never bought a new style or pioneered a new genre she was just a good talent with $h!tloads of marketing behind her, she just shifts units of records

I feel a lot of people forget what Britney Spears has actually done. When she burst onto the scene in 1998 with Baby One More Time, many thought they could write her off as "the girl in the school girl outfit", but she kept bringing it back. Perhaps it was her semi-innocent songs with a slightly subtle sexual image; example Crazy. She kept it real, but one thing that has kept Britney on top is her growing up with her music: from BOMT to Slave, we saw the change. We all saw it coming, it was a gradual stage, but she did. She took risks with her music, no-one else at the time had songs like Slave and Boys, certainly someone who had been singing about innocent puppy love. Alongside this, who saw the snake around the neck? Her sexuality was really impacting at this stage, and when 3/4 years later when she returned to the VMA's with the kiss, that started a new lease of life for her career. Suddenly this pop baby was kissing girls, and dressed in a white wedding dress. She took a risk, and didn't care how it furthered. She took even more risks with In The Zone where she sung about masturbation, and if that wasn't enough. The song Everytime. Who expected a singer singing about puppy love to release one of the most uncommercial tracks probably recorded by a female popstar? The song doesn't rely on a soprano singer, it relies on emotion, and Britney delivers amazingly if you ask me.

Then she hit rock bottom, but that's nothing to do with her music. Her music was oxymoronic of her life, that era was interesting. People hated Britney Spears: The Front Page girl, yet they loved Britney Spears: The Singer. Whilst she didn't write the song Piece Of Me, the producers have stated that she had a lot of say with that song. She brought her stardom to another level, where she mimicked the media, who funnily enough loved the song.

Now finally, the Circus era. Electropop was making it's way back into the charts, she has already experimented in her CDs (see In The Zone), but apart from Gaga's Just Dance/PokerFace. No-one was really doing electropop and now, who isn't doing it? And the single that followed Circus? To me sounds like a throwback to her old music, not sure about you. I'm not saying Circus is a step forward for the queen of pop, but when Madonna had her crown she made awful CDs - I mean American Life, really?

I don't have an issue with her lipsyncing, I can see how some do; but to say Britney has not done anything in the world of music is an incorrect statement.

I'm sorry, but saying "Britney took risks with her music" and similar statements is a bit silly if other people did it for her and modelled her. She's basically a blank canvas for other people to work their magic on.

It has come to this point yes. But really she didn't become robot like and puppet like until the Circus era. From her debut to In The Zone she was very passionate about her work, and promoted it, had an extremely lovable personality... and she made her own success. In the Blackout era she still made AMAZING music with a proper amount of her personal input, but once the product was released she was in the midst of a breakdwon. (Britney has always picked new producers and she is responsible for discovering many now HUGE producers... who she found on her own accord).

It's sad that her recent misfortunes have become a shadow over all her massive accomplishments throughout the majority of her career.
