Also, if the mods are going to decide songs which should or shouldn't be entered, and also decide on whether appeals should be accepted or not, one could argue that maybe they shouldn't be actively participating in the contests themselves...

Also, as for those who mentioned Agnes and Margaret Berger, Agnes was (in hindsight for me) probably one of the most obvious winners, and I doubt she would have been banned. As for Margaret, if people look back, nobody except Rich thought she would win - everybody considered the contest to be a dead cert for Pink, who no doubt would have been banned, and she didn't even win.

As Aaron also pointed out, Beverley Knight, whose win contributed to turning the contest around, would never have been entered. The winner would have been Lily Allen, who would have been allowed, followed by the number one hit from Evanescance...

The rules are full of flaws, and I stand by what I said about the debates and arguments about endless regulations having potential to cause far more damage to the contest than a few cheap entries or predictable wins.

interesting idea, I can see the mods really going for that

so if any of Tom, Phil, Tyron or Aaron wish to send a cheap song out of interest from this point onwards, is this permitted seeing as they are not going to disqualify themselves, or does it have to be approved by another mod?

And what about the host? What happens if they are disqualified mid-contest?

I'm not one to go for cheap songs :P Phil, I can't guarantee :kink:

After some consideration, I think the current rule change would probably be far more acceptable if it were modified just a tad. Would people be happier if it were a state where something that were on these lists is banned, but that entries were allowed to go on to the playlists during the contest to no consequence?

Just read this as I was intrigued by this BJ song contest thing. Jeez you guys are scarily intense. :o

From an outsider's point of view, if someone enters Lady Gaga (or whatever) next time, why don't you all just not vote for it?

Rather upsettingly, that seems to not really work, as evidenced by Alejandro just finishing 7th :(

Push The Button was already entered by Ashton :heehee: it came top 10

Two years ago to the first ever contest, which let's not forget was won by Britney Spears.

And, on the point of Lily Allen. When i entered I Don't Know, it was a demo that she'd put online. She'd said it wasn't that likely to make the final cut. I had no idea i'd make the album, never mind be the lead single and a massive #1. It will always be a BJSC entry to me. As will Boys and Girls.

That would probably be alot more acceptable, as I don't think there is much dispute that songs in the Top 40 etc are pretty cheap. It just could be a complete mess to ban things mid-contest, and that particular part of the rule didn't really seem to have been thought through much.

I belive I voted for both :w00t: but my 12 was reserved for Spice Girls iirc :drama:

As if people will remember who finished at number 7 two contests ago. People rather remember who finished at number 1-2-3. OK that was my entry so maybe I shouldn't say anything... but actually I can accept the rules if must...

Oh and btw my suggestion was overlooked (again).

Guys, I see this is a big issue.

Mods, please don't jump on my throat, but why don't you do some polls for these new rules, so you can see what people's real opinions are. If the majority vote YES for one of the rules it'll take effect. If for one of the rules the majority says no, it won't take effect.

I can see some rules being implemented into BJSC but some are maybe too much.

I agree with Ben about a poll, it's probably the fairest way to decide if we should use it s a test or something... and since we have a week to spare ;o
Definitely, I think the mods should be here to moderate and organise the contest but not have 100% control, so running a poll would be a good way to decide if people are for these changes.

Here we go again, I don't really get these rules. Well, Marina won, so what? Has there been any other winner in the previous 10 contests that would have been disqualified based on these rules? I cannot remember any. This should be a fun competition and not taken too seriously, so what if Alejandro finished 7th, it might have been still a discovery for some because of this competition. These new rules remind me about the discussion of whether to allow ESC national final songs into the competition. Some people seemed to be screaming bloody hell and predicting that it would be the end of the BJSC and now, what has changed? Nothing really, it was much ado about nothing really. And again now, I discovered a very good Shakira song IMO from last competition, something that wouldn't have happened with these rules. I really don't see the problem with a few "cheap entries" every contest. And rules like banning Billboard top 5 hits or from MTV playlists? Or a song that is peaking at no 39 on UK singles chart, is that a cheap entry, really?

The new rules really wouldn't have any effect on me since I doubt I have never ever sent a song that would have been considered even remotely banned and I doubt I ever will and with a rule like this I would have for once finished top ten in the last contest. But still I am against all these silly rules. I mean banning songs from artists that have active AFs? So if there are a few active fans on some AF forum (and the active members not even participating on BJSC), the latest album is banned? And yeah, if the mods go around deciding what songs to ban and what not, then they certainly shouldn't be allowed to participate. At least there should be a public vote on this, whether to scrape all these ridiculous rules.

I think all these rules will hurt the competition much more than a few cheap songs in every contest.

Hollywood is hardly cheap to somebody like Jerick or Zech, unless Marina has a huge early following in Norway and Germany

Not yet.

Although she would deserve it.

Yeah but you gave me your 12 (danke ) and Hurts are playing concerts in Germany next month, so maybe that was cheap

Yeah, I should have boycotted it! I hereby take back my 12 points!! :P

I didn't mean that

I feel quite torn about this actually - I can completely see and agree in many ways with both sides of the arguement here and there have been some very valid points made sticking up for both

Yes I'm getting bored of the contest in recent months, particularly the inevitablity of the winners/ability to predict them before reservations even open/the rush to reserve the latest hyped up thing etc...this is all massively sucking the fun out of the contest. I'm not a nostalgia freak, I don't yearn for 'the good old days' because I had much more fun with this contest in XI-XX than I ever did in the first ten (VI and VII excluded on account of them being very memorable for me) and the winners have always been fairly predictable to an extent, I've never been too far out with my odds for example and more often than not got the right winner, but it used to be fun to predict which of the unknown songs could steal a victory, which really never seems to be the case now because there are always one or two fairly known/hyped up songs per month that you just know will eclipse everything else before any of the other entries have even been heard.

However, on the other side, I don't agree with people being dictated what to send (well, I wouldn't have a problem with a mini banlist of three completely ridiculous entries like I said earlier, Cilmi's latest for example). People have a pretty good idea of what makes a decent entry and what makes a terrible one anyway. Blocking everything on the Radio 1 playlist/iTunes top 40/UK top 40/MTV playlists etc...isn't the way to stop cheap, it's the way to drive people away from the contest in protest - the absolutely cheap tracks like Riverside, Love Story, Jai Ho, Beat Again, Love Game etc...always flop anyway and these are the songs that are cluttering up these playlists - this won't stop the unprecedently well received freshly hyped tracks from running away with the contest. Banning ALL of the current era songs from artist forums is ludicrous. For example, I don't generally listen to Enya or Will Young, and wouldn't buy a studio album by either, but have been known to like bits and pieces of their material. BJSC is a good way to be introduced to these album tracks you wouldn't otherwise hear. And then there are other artists who are FAR more BuzzJack friendly at this moment in time but are still without an AF; Ke$ha, Alicia Keys, Alexandra Burke, Florence + The Machine, Little Boots, The Veronicas etc...so anything from these acts current eras is fine, yet Beverley Knight's latest album is banned.

Do I have a solution to this? absolutely not, I'm just thinking out loud  but this is a large reason why I didn't even consider applying for mod again when the vacancy arose. If I learnt anything as mod here, it's that it is impossible to please all of the people all of the time. Leave things as they are and there is the danger of people walking out through sheer boredom of the predictability and uninspiring nature of some of the entries, change everything about and there is the danger of people walking out due to feeling like the contest has become a dictatorship. Whatever happens, I do think that there will inevitably be people leaving the contest in the next couple of months - maybe the contest is coming to it's natural end? I hope not, but it does seem to be pulling in two different directions at the moment and a lot of people are going to end up unhappy with whatever the final decisions are.
