For a long time I didn't know that Bye Bye Baby, No.1 in 1975 for the Bay City Rollers, was originally done by The Four Seasons in the 60's.

And then the first UK cover was in 1967 - a #44 hit by The Symbols

The Symbols then covered The Ronettes - Best Part Of Breakin' Up a bigger hit at #25 but this was there last hit.

Dawn Penn - You Don't Love Me #3 in 1994 -- original - Gary Walker (of the Walker Brothers) #26 in 1966

Boney M - Rivers Of Babylon -- original Melodians

Boney M - Sunny -- original Bobby Hebb UK#12 & US #2 in 1966

Also covered in 1966 by Georgie Fame #13 & Cher #32

Joan Jett's "I Love Rock 'n' Roll".

Britney ruined that song :(

Joan Jett's "I Love Rock 'n' Roll".

Haha, so glad I wasn't the only one! I remember the critical mauling it got, and thinking "What's wrong with it? It's one of the best things Britney's ever written"

You do realise Joan Jett's version was a cover as well.

'Torn' by Natalie Imbruglia. Never realised it was a cover until a good year or so later when I saw something on MTV at the time.

Ay, this one shocked me too. The original is by Ednaswap (1995)

This is one of the running themes on Steve Lamacq's 6Music show this week.

They've just played the original version of The Only Way Is Up by Otis Clay. I never knew that (a number one for Yazz) was a cover. The original is far better.

Here's another 4 - all summer party hits

Saragossa Band - Agadou -- original of the Black Lace cheesy hit -- Saragossa Band were from Spain

Electronica's - Dance Little Bird -- original of The Tweets - Birdy Song -- original titled Original Bird Dance in the UK and peaked at #22 -- Electronica's were from Holland

George Baker Selection - Paloma Blanca -- original of Jonathan King's cheesy hit -- GBS peaked at #10

Samantha - Y Viva Espana -- original of Sylvia's UK hit

Kim Carnes - Bette Davis Eyes

Was originally written and recorded by Jackie De Shannon in 1974. Oddly enough, the original version doesn't feature the synth riff Carnes' version is famous for.

Also, 'I Just Want to Make Love To You' by Etta James (aka the Diet Coke ad music) was first recorded by Muddy Waters.
