 The topic title say it all really.

Do you like that?

Personally, I do I think it's important for an artist to show fans their diversity and knowledge in music and genres. (Some people will jump on me because of this statement but) Rihanna's albums have been so different and that's why she has wide variety of fans.

Although, some times it doesn't work.

So again I ask you the question: Do you like Artists/Bands changing their musical direction or not? :)

Basically if artists don't change they probably won't last in the business.

Every fan has a boredom threshold before they say enough is enough, please do something else.

Well unless you are a Mariah Carey fan and you like listening to the same record on repeat for the last 20 years.

Artists that do manage to continue in the business without change never get any critical acclaim, and are not taken seriously.

An excellent example is Kylie Minogue's Impossible Princess album. Completely different than what she is best known for. Really personal, dark, moody, indie... it's excellent. A fan favourite.

It is of course important for them to grow as an artist. You wont be able to survive longer than an album or two on the same sound, there has to be some sort of change.

Rihanna has really evolved in her sound. You'd never guess the same girl who did Pon De Replay would do Russian Roulette for example.

Very true.

Don't know the album, but the singles from it are my favourite Kylie moments

Yes it is important and it is good to. Kylie's impossible princess album is probably her best to date.

It seems like the Pet Shop Boys haven't change there sound at all.

Yes, I like it because it means they're creative and willing to try things to express themselves even if it might not work commercially. People always talk about Madonna and her "new images/directions" but I always feel she's never branched out that much because she's scared of being uncommercial in her music.

I think Madonna sucessfully branched out earlier in her career, and because of this we expect more from her now - I'd love to see her take more risks now.

Should not be too hard on her though as she led the way in diversification.

Clearly you haven't listened to much Mariah Carey.

I totally agree about Kylie;s much under achieved impossoble princess album, its a brilliant album and ranks highly in my top 3 faveourite kylie albums to date, its very different from all her other albums but for me i still find the album has a small bit of what kylie usually does, saldy it didnt have mass appeal and its more of a cult faveourite than anything.

I also loved kylie;s light years and fever era and body language was a very different follow up to these albums especially fever and body language is one of my least faveourite kylie albums, there are a few good tracks on the album and the singles slow and chocolate i love but in a way it was to different for me, i think thats one of the things i love about kylie none of her albums or singles sound the same she always take a diiferent route for all her albums.

Take That i think changed their sound in alot of ways when they reformed and the 2 studio albums they have released since there return have been excellent but yet very very different and again i think that is why they have experienced such huge success.

The Killers third album day and age was very different from their previous 2 studio albums and it worked a treat for me, i love all their albums but day and age really shines for me, it was very different but it still had traces of the killers music i got to know and love.

Keane on their third album especially tried a completly different direction to their first 2 releases, again i loved perfect symetry but it didnt sell nearly aswell as their first 2 albums.

TO be fair she did try with forgive me

And 'Outta My Head'. (not a single yet I know)

I think an obvious one is The Beatles, when you think about the earlier songs like She Loves You and I Want To Hold Your Hand, and compare it to I Am The Walrus or Strawberry Fields...it quite a drastic change.

P!nk changed her sound too, she started out as RnB then switched to pop/rock and its worked for her ever since.

Actually, you're right and it turned out to be very good.

This is the sole reason why Paolo Nutini's album is still top 10 in the albums chart.

SSU wasn't TS part 2, so it's sold similarly because he's appealed to a new audience.

Artists who are true artists should do what they are good at and what they can support with their skills. For example a slow song on a Gaga album is good and adds sth to her profile but it is the upbeat that are those who match her best and thats why she can have 9dance and 1balad proportion in her albums.

Mariah has been the Queen for so long and she has experimented with rnb dance pop.. but bittersweet power ballads is her best, can't blame her for releasing some on every album. Every singer thats wants to prove she has vocal talent sings Mariah's songs on worldwide shows, and we have the 'new Mariah' talk every now and then, she has sold beyond most artists imagination, she wouldn't be no1 forever.

Taylor swift has this fresh story-telling pop-country thing that is very popular. If she releases the same thing next year she will flop. This is her style but she can EVOLVE it, or fall behind. That is the answer to why 2nd albums usually never come close to the first one. The first one is 100% original the 2nd tries to copy the success of the first.

Leona does't have great songs on this album, but I am proud of her for maintaining her musical identity. That is her music style and not upbeat. She didn't have a killer ballad in this album, if she did she would've easily gone no1 and there would be no comments about her flopping. It is not only the singer but also the album he\she presents.

There are artists who can support a variety of music directions, but this is not nessecary for everyone. Look at the ''versatile'' Robbie having numberous 2milion sellers one after the other, then trying an electronic alternative album and flopping so badly. Gaga and Peas have brilliant sales with electronic albums including songs which bear resemblence to Rudebox. Timberlake's Sexyback was not that different too. If Rudebox had some britpop and ballads it would be a much different story.

By all this I mean artists should experiment but not too much, it is more about updating and evolvin their style. I don't think Leona should become Gaga to sell, as much as I do like her alien style a world of Gagas would be a terrible place to live in. Sales are unpredictable though and they always will be, even for best selling artists their best songs are not always their bestsellers.

Sugababes keep changing from album to album, some changes are appreciated, some are not... But they (the brand) are still around after 11 years already.
Very true.

The singles are really good, I love them! But the best tracks on the album aren't singles - you should give it a listen!!

I suppose some good came out of it's failure. Had it went 4x Platinum or something then we would've probably got IP2 as the next album and Kylie as we know her today would've never happened. Which basically means no GaGa.

I don't mind artists experimenting with different sounds, as long as they're able to realise when an experiment has failed, and revert to something more like what their fans expect.
