Rule The World is probably the biggest example of 'song that should been #1' of the noughties, maybe along with Chasing Cars, if we're talking about cultural impact (and I HATE Chasing Cars). Considering it's probably their signature song now, ahead of all of the other classic's they've released in the last 20 odd years, I definitely think it 'should have been a #1', shame they didn't release it a week earlier :drama:

Definitely. 'Rule The World' had incredible first week sales (97k iirc?) whilst at the time was overshadowed by Leona's 218k. However, had Take That released their single the previous it would've definitely gone to no. 1 - even if it only sold half the amount it did. Sugababes 'About You Now' would've therefore had three weeks at no. 1 allowing Take That to slot inbetween Sugababes and Leona.

Alas it wasn't to be. For me personally the best examples of "should've been no. 1" are those that stalled at no. 2 behind various one week wonders - 'Better Off Alone', 'Milkshake' and 'Lose My Breath' by far are the best examples of this.

Having climbed 4-3-2, I was hoping Better Off Alone would continue to #1, but no, instead it stayed there for what seemed like an eternity (although it was only 3 weeks :P) behind a sea of rubbish. Westlife??? Geri Halliwell??? :drama: the week Westlife were #1 ahead of it, If I Let You Go beat Better Off Alone by less than 500 copies, I remember being particularly gutted because that was its highest weekly sale yet, and was SO close! Would have stopped Westlife's 7 opening #1's from occuring as well!

Oh i love Lose My Breath  The vid was like the unofficial introduction of Sasha Fierce with her back up dancers

Anyway, i was shocked to find out a while ago that Geri's Look At Me failed to get to #1 despite later forgettable hits getting there.

I was ususally suspicious Westlife's "weekend effect" as they didn't seem like the type of pop act who would benefit from weekend sales - but hey, what did I know? :P Best example is Mel C 'Never Be The Same Again' which was ahead of 'Fool Again' in the midweeks and was even the CD:UK Saturday Chart no. 1 :P - it just seemed a bit odd that Westlife somehow sold enough to overtake Mel C. Even worse after their abysmal mimed performance on CD:UK where they kept making "V" (as in peace signs) to the camera throughout. I wish Mel C had made no. 1 to spite them for that. My hatred for Westlife developed after that.

Although did Mel C not make number 1 with NBTSA anyways?

The irony in that sentence is that 'Look At Me' was beaten to no. 1 by one of Boyzone's many forgettable hits - 'You Needed Me'. :manson: Remember it? Thought not. :P

You Needed Me and Look At Me were both dire dire songs, one of the worst chart battles ever. Like Hits said in another thread, Shania Twain's infinitely more classic and far bigger selling (than the two put together probably) That Don't Impress Me Much should have entered at #1 that week.
Your post doesn't really show your being supportive of Alex G (THE FLOPSTAR). :kink:

I know :( But I am being realistic.

It's DINNER, not TEA.

Tea = drink.

IT'S TEA NOT DINNER. BITCH.

Ya, I can use caps too. Aren't I cool?

Yea i weren't a big fan of Look at me and yea YNM was pretty bland too. TDIMM should've been no.1. CLASSIC

Yes, the previous week it entered at no. 1 - this was the following week when Mel C was on course to spend a second week at no. 1 but alas it never happened. Record companies certainly knew how to exploit the singles chart back in 2000. It seems the UK charts have started to go back to the old ways. Now we're having more UK no. 1 singles but where one in five new no. 1 singles seem worthy compared to the other four out of five.

2008 was a great year for no. 1 singles because there were just 20 - those songs defined 2008. 'This Ain't A Love Song' on the other hand doesn't strike me as a song that'll define 2010 at the end of the year. However, it does sound the type of song that will be played during the World Cup highlights when England are knocked out of the World Cup by Senegal in the quater final. Or something to this effect. :P

Look At Me was just attention seeking rubbish :puke: You Needed Me was a sleep inducing borefest, yet they managed to follow it up with another top 3 hit, the even blander Every Day I Love You. Thank goodness they've redeemed themselves now with the Brother album

How odd how this has been brought up again. It's like we're obsessed. Oh wait, we are obsessed. :D

Still, 'That Don't Impress Me Much' was excellent.

Delirious? now up to #10 and Florence/Dizzee FINALLY down to #11.

This is definitely the week of the shock hit. Scouting For Girls running away with the #1 and a flop 90's indie band in the iTunes top ten?

Yea Geri has had much better song IMO. I loved Everyday i love you so i disagree there Rich.

Yes Delirious top 10

That flop Indie band Delirious? is one of my fave bands, I'm so glad they are going out on a high  #1 beckons, just a hunch

I don't think I liked any Geri singles at all, ever - closest I came was Lift Me Up but even that was only 'ok'. Everyday I Love You was ok, but I doubt many people remember it even existed. Boyzone singles always fell into two categories - pop standards e.g. No Matter What, Picture Of You, Words, Love Me For A Reason, Baby Can I Hold You and forgettable fanbase buys e.g. You Needed Me, Isn't It A Wonder, Everyday I Love You, Coming Home Now...I'd struggle to place A Different Beat anywhere, I think it should be a lot more well remembered than it actually is, just because it's completely bizarre for a boyband song

Yes, no. 1 in the Hate Chart. Well, it wouldn't surprise me. :P

I've never heard of the track. Must YouTube it to see what it's like.
