Posted April 10, 201015 yr The lovely Sophie Ellis-Bextor is back with the first single from her new album Straight To The Heart (which will be released after the second single), 'Bittersweet' is pretty much universally being seen as a return to form and rightfully so. It looks like Radio 1 are snubbing this so can it still make the top 10 without their support? I'm going to stick my neck out and say yes! http://i42.tinypic.com/bfif81.jpg BCF_COCESNE
April 10, 201015 yr I really want to like this, I just don't. It bores me. I would guess lower top ten.
April 10, 201015 yr The Freemasons mix edit thingymajigg is amazing. I really hope Top5 for her, good comeback.
April 10, 201015 yr I agree with Theo, I'm thinking similar success to Heartbreak, but it deserves Top 5.
April 10, 201015 yr I guess I'm in the minority who doesn't think this song is much cop. 'Catch You' was better and that could only make no. 9 in the UK charts. I think this will go low top 20 if lucky but wouldn't at all surprised if it stalls somewhere between 21-30 to be honest. Is it also just me who thinks 'Bittersweet' sounds like 'Fade To Grey' in the chorus - only pitched down about five notes?
April 10, 201015 yr It's grows on me everytime i see the video. ATM as i like it more & more and also that she deserves success again. I'd want it top 5 by the most. :D Edited April 10, 201015 yr by xxMusicLovaRobxx
April 10, 201015 yr Author I guess I'm in the minority who doesn't think this song is much cop. 'Catch You' was better and that could only make no. 9 in the UK charts. #8 actually. :P My pedantic side is now showing.
April 10, 201015 yr #25 It's good but lacks something that previous singles did for me I think. I've not heard it much at all to suggest it will be a top ten hit (unlike Lemar and Gabriella Cilmi's singles which were pretty much everywhere APART from Radio 1). I agree with Hits about the Fade to Grey comparison too :o I knew it reminded me of something. I hope her new album doesn't have weird single choices again like the last era - I mean I liked Me & My Imagination and Today The Sun's On Us but why exactly was If You Go not released at any point? It was the most single 'sounding' song on Shoot From The Hip other than Catch You. Although my personal favourite was Love Is Here which would have been a GREAT comeback single as a duet between The Feeling (she co-wrote the track with Dan of the band) and Sophie, rather than I Thought It Was Over.
April 10, 201015 yr If Sophie Ellis Bextor did another pop gem like 'Murder On The Dancefloor' then I'd be more than happy to see Sophie hitting the no. 1 spot but for me 'Bittersweet' sounds more like album filler than a proper lead single. Edited April 10, 201015 yr by Hitstastic
April 10, 201015 yr Author I'm so worried now. :( It will ruin her completely if this actually does flop.

Probably because record companies insist on employing people who haven't got a clue about music. All artists need is three or four excellent singles and you can more than likely guarantee if the best tracks are released as singles, it'd encourage more people to buy the album. It's a shame though for SEB as her music career is always going to be overshadowed by 'Groovejet'. Remember, Theaudience were hardly dance but because 'Groovejet' was so successful it pushed SEB into a genre she had previously had no interest in. ...and you can bet if Kylie had recroded 'Bittersweet', the track would be more successful because that's how fans/media operate. Just like if SEB had recorded '2 Hearts' it probably would've failed to go top 10. Edited April 10, 201015 yr by Hitstastic
April 10, 201015 yr This is a very poor song. :( It just fails to grab me like 'Catch You' or her earlier material did - even after a lot of listens. The song tricks you by making you think it's going to explode into this really huge chorus but then it's just sort of boring. Such a shame. I think it will make the top 20 though top 10 isn't out of the question if it's a quiet week or R1 do decide to support it.
April 10, 201015 yr This has to be one of the most overrated songs of this year so far. I can't believe how people are harping on about it and i usually like SEB. Don't get me wrong, i think this style of music is the only way she could have gone but its dull beyond belief, the chorus is lame and it seems to take forever to get there. Its like a kylie b-side and sounds like it took about 2 minutes to write. I'll say top ten but it only deserves low 20's in terms of the quality of the track. Edited April 10, 201015 yr by andyboiuk

I sadly completely agree, I've tried to love it as I adore Sophie but it's a bit 'heard it all before' (although I do like it, and it's growing to an extent). I can see why Radio 1 haven't playlisted it, it just feels a bit '2007' - Freemasons aren't #1 producers of choice these days, maybe if David Guetta had produced it then it would be a different story! I dunno, maybe I would have been raving over it if it was released at the same sort of time as their 'Beautiful Liar' remix, i.e. three years ago, but now it just seems like she's forgotten to evolve her sound. The ironic thing is that this would have been a great lead single in 2007 whereas Catch You would have been better for now
