Lady Gaga

By Cyndi Lauper

I first heard the name Lady Gaga through a mutual friend. He couldn't stop talking about her. Then I heard her music, and I thought, Wow, I love this kid.

An artist's job is to take a snapshot — be it through words or sound, lyrics or song — that explains what it's like to be alive at that time. Lady Gaga's art captures the period we're in right now. These days, you go to a club and wonder who all these kids are. They don't seem to have jobs. How can they afford to be here? Her song "Beautiful, Dirty, Rich" explains that scene. It's about the New York prep-school party kids she grew up with. It's where she came from. Gaga's lyrics are incredibly literary. When "Bad Romance" starts, the music grabs your ear immediately. Then she opens with the line "I want your ugly/ I want your disease," and all of a sudden you're listening. Most of the stuff on the radio is not very clever, but Gaga presents her ideas in a sophisticated manner. She has an incredible pop sensibility.

People forget how young she is. She is barely 24 — much younger than I was when I became famous. It's very tough being where she is right now. People are pulling her in all different directions. It's hard to navigate that. Try to imagine what you were like at her age, if you still can. I can't wait to see how she grows and what she decides her next act will be. She only has two albums out, but already she is inspiring other artists to go further in their own work.

When I see somebody like Gaga, I sit back in admiration. I'm inspired to pick up the torch again myself. I did an interview with her once, and she showed up with a sculpture on her head. I thought, How awesome. Being around her, I felt like the dust was shaken off of me. I find it very comforting to sit next to somebody and not have to worry that I look like the freak. She isn't a pop act, she is a performance artist. She herself is the art. She is the sculpture.

Click here for video, she adorable

My opinionszz. GaGa definitely deserved this, she's influenced so many people, other celebs and ordianary people alike. She's gonna be the most influential this decade too, IMO. All she thinks about are her fans, just love her to bits. Also, she looks stunning in the photoshoot

GaGa, Taylor Swift & R-Patz  I agree with GaGa winning this, she certainly influences me. But this doesn't make up for her only coming 92nd on FHM's 100 sexiest women 2010 poll.

Surprised to see Neil Patrick Harris so high :o But I do really like him :)

Hmm... I wouldn't actually call her influential!

Go GaGa!

She's had a big influence in music world, but also creating awareness with things like hiv/aids.

Taylor Swift 9th .

Lea Michele 13th though .

Isn't that the girl from Glee? I wouldn't say She's been a global influence tbh.

Lady GaGa wasn't afraid of people's opinion at the beginning. She just tried her thing and it worked as we can see since 2008.

But talking about "influential"... maybe she's influencing many normal people and "some" singers (not all)

but she didn't invented anything new to call it hers. I don't say she ever said that but some people and fans of her do so

and act like as if she would have been the very first person who did this kind of music and this crazy style + outfit things.

When I saw her video for "Poker Face" the first time (I didn't noticed "Just dance"...) there I thought, she sings a bit like

Christina Aguilera, the song itself had something of "Daddy Cool" from Boney M and otherwise like a 90's pop song

and her odd outfits reminded me of a female sexier version of the glam-rock outfits from the 70's or some space movies...Lol

(= nothing new or original). But now so many people are saying about other artists that they're copying Lady GaGa

(it annoys me to read that on almost every dance song video of an female artist nowadays...) but that's just not true because as long as she wasn't the very first person to do something, she isn't the person who's copied (simple thing). So in the end I just wanna say, respect for her success - but some of her fans should learn about music history before they judge other musicians about originality!

Am I right, Mr Bowie (alias Ziggy Stardust)...?!

She copies Bowie/Ziggy Stardust big time image-wise! And musically, I don't think she's that great. She just dresses weird.

That list is compiled by an old woman with dementia and it shows.

Half of the people on that list are complete jokes (And I'm not referring to GaGa)

Since when has Ashton Kutcher been influential?

Yeah, I have to admit that was the one on that list that stood out to me and made me think 'WTF  '.

Ashton Kutcher seems a much bigger name in the US than over here for some reason... he seems to garner more respect than the usual young actor appearing in low-rent films and being a knob.

Good for the GaGa! She is definitely hugely influential atm ^_^
