What a joke of a thread.

FFS, I voted at 07:11 Hours in the morning, yet later that same evening in my same poll station the queues went up to 40/50 with a 20/25 minute waiting time to vote.

Those people had 15 Hours, and the option of Postal Voting. Yet failed to vote = Pathetic. It's like going boo hoo its not fair when you fail to get a ticket for a sell out gig/music festival because you can't be bothered to get on the phone/internet as soon as the lines open..

And as for those students who failed to turn up with their Polling cards..... oh for crying out loud.

Pathetic, just pathetic. This thread is a perfect reflection of society today where too many people blame anybody else but themselves for their own mistakes. So no doubt these students will get jobs in the Banking Sector in the City when they graduate.

I agree; as a general rule of thumb to not leave things to the last minute however there were instances where there was a mile long queue for several hours in some places? How is this? Was there a lack of voting stations in the said area?

I voted at rush hour and there was NO ONE there! Mind you, I live in Hazel Blears' constituency but given the demograph, it will never swing to the tories so people were less than enthusiastic about voting... a shame!

There was nobody there when I went to vote at 6pm in Aberdeen South. I was literally the only voter in the building when I crossed my paper. Perhaps one thing that needs to be done is to change this ludicrous law that you have to register your vote at one station and one station only based on your address. I do not think the actual voting process should be electronic, but the process of marking off the fact you have arrived to vote should be.

I would also expect polling stations to try to stay open later than 10pm, but I can understand. I certainly don't blame what happened on students, more on those who were not willing to change their daily cycle just one day out of 365.

Weekend voting would be even better. That way schools can be used as polling stations without having to close loads of schools. It should also be possible to close the polls earlier.

Even better ... just Sunday! Nobody has an excuse at all then. For many Christians in the UK ... it would be the only time they go to church apart from Weddings and Funerals.

And people should stop blaming students for the fiasco. Everyone knows it was those on benefits who clogged up the queues ... waiting for their daytime telly to finish.

Richard you are so utterly wrong on this thread it's hard to know where to even begin... The facts are there were people turned away who'd beem queuing up for a good 2-3 hours at least... Some had even brought their dinner with them... And these are the facts - WORKING PATTERNS HAVE CHANGED IN THE PAST 150 SODDING YEARS.....

There are plenty of other countries in the world that actually have their poll over the course of two-to-three days, this sounds eminently sensible to me.. Why not have it at the weekend, then you'd avoid the Post-6pm bottleneck with people coming straight from work...? The facts are that this should never be allowed to happen again..

What a lame load of sh!t to blame students FFS.... <_<

That's fine as long as there's internet access available but that's not the case at some polling stations. I voted in a portacabin. Of course, weekend voting would help with that as more buildings would be available without causing disruption. There's a risk that allowing people to vote anywhere in the constituency would make it more likely that one station would run out of ballot papers - unless they were printed on demand. If local elections are held on the same day that would add another complication as some people would be restricted to voting in their own ward while others wouldn't be.
