May 13, 201015 yr Re listening to mine at work atm. I've got to say the instrumental first track is amazing!! I pretty much liked everything on my first listen but I kind of stopped distinguishing one track from another towards the ladt 8 or so songs.
May 13, 201015 yr Da buzz were sent to BJSC 9? ( - could have been 8 or 10 ha!) with 'Dangerous' Thats the one :magic: iirc i liked that
May 13, 201015 yr Me too. I'm guessing Aaron or Shoat as the compiler... Ha! Ouch. :( (though I suppose mine would have received a similar reaction) Anyway, I don't want to assume too much, but I've received Canadiana. I'm guessing it could be from our (likely) only Canadian participant? Looks like I should possibly expect Canadian artists, maybe some called Diana as well? I'm just about to find out. ^_^ I really can't guess who made this. Haha, I think this really shows that you're not lying when you say you don't often listen to soulful music. You might have noticed a particular artist crop up a few times and put two and two together otherwise. :heehee: I'll go into the details and tracklisting a bit later, but it was basically compiled of artists/tracks I could link to Beverley Knight in whatever tedious way I could come up with, and to show her diversity. (the tracks she appears on are all quite different) The 'journey' was something I tried to work in - taking it from dance to the more funky tracks to soul - but it was hard to satisfy both objectives, which might have harmed the flow. I'm glad you somewhat liked it anyway, I was a bit nervous when I saw you'd received it. (though it could have been much worse)
May 13, 201015 yr I'm glad you somewhat liked it anyway, I was a bit nervous when I saw you'd received it. (though it could have been much worse) I'm looking forward to seeing the track listing.
May 14, 201015 yr Da Buzz were huge here! Love 'em! LOL at Phil's tracklist! Pretty much everything i already know! And i do have Delta's Believe Again in the CD I received as well. :kink:
May 14, 201015 yr And i do have Delta's Believe Again in the CD I received as well. :kink: Ooh I wonder whose it could be that you received :o Mine features Olafur Arnalds :funky:
May 14, 201015 yr Ooh I wonder whose it could be that you received :o Mine features Olafur Arnalds :funky: Tell me about it! So many DeltaLoons out here, so many people to choose from :( :o Never heard of him. Is he a rapper? :kink:
May 14, 201015 yr Tell me about it! So many DeltaLoons out here, so many people to choose from :( :o Never heard of him. Is he a rapper? :kink: No, more drum & bass... ^_^
May 14, 201015 yr No, more drum & bass... ^_^ I am not a huge fan of that genre unfortunately :( I guess i'd not like the CD you received. I mean Caroline Af Ugglas? Eww.
May 14, 201015 yr Light 11 - Review A-01: Nice opening indie track. Builds up from a drum beat progressing with a piano and various other sounds. Male vocal comes in singing ‘we all fall down’ and something else I can’t make out. Gets very cluttered at the end, but in a good way. I wouldn’t say I love it but I’d be happy to hear it again. 7.5/10 A-02: The winning Eurovision song from 1973. Anne-Marie David - Tu Te Reconnaîtras from Luxembourg. This must have been a little bit dated at the time as it sounds very much more late 60’s than early 70’s. Decent little song actually. Being a flop Eurovision fan, I’m not that clued up on most of the pre 90’s entries, including some of the winners, so although I recognise the song, I don’t know it well. I can see why it won though. 8/10 A-03: Wow, odd contrast from the last song. Bang up to date with an electro intro here. I see the flow of the album wasn’t the top consideration here :kink: Diabolical vocals on top of a really pretty great backing track. I can’t make out what the guy is saying, the vocals have gone through a robotic vocal machine, so this song’s not exactly a pleasurable listen. Drags on for too long at 5 and a half minutes but at least the vocals stop for most of the last minute or more! 6/10 (would have been 8.5 as an instrumental) A-04: A 2:12 song now! Some drastically different track lengths on this compilation. I can’t make out a lot of this song, some woman shouting over a weird indie/rock/soul fusion type track. Are the vocals in German? I can’t really make it out, I can just hear a lot of ‘ich’ type sounds. Surprisingly not a disaster despite all of this. 7/10 A-05: Hafdis Huld! One of the most unmistakable voices around. I’m not familiar with this song, I assume it’s from her new album that I haven’t got round to buying/downloading yet? Very nice song, a lot more down tempo than I’ve come to expect from what I’ve heard so far from Hafdis but it does get slightly more jolly in the chorus and towards the end, despite darker lyrics than I’m used to. Very nice listen though as with Kongulo and Action Man. 8.5/10 A-06: A quick lyric search for this tells me that it’s Iiris Vesik with Astronaut. Ah, I recognise the name, it was in Estonia’s Eurovision national final this year I believe. Why Estonia decided to send Siren over this, I’ll never know as it would have been one of the most contemporary things in the contest this year, and this is coming from one of Siren’s very few fans. Fantastic piano intro which continues all the way through  It has a 90’s vibe to the song in places, but also sounds oddly fresh and modern at the same time. Her voice is a bit of an acquired taste, very high pitched, but I like it. If this had actually been sent to ESC this year, it would have been one of my top ten favourites. Having said that, although I love it, it’s not massively catchy so I’m not sure it would have done that well in the contest, not that Siren will do anything anyway though  9/10 A-07: I know this one! It’s Caroline Af Ugglas and Tommy Nilsson with Du Var Mitt Hjärta. Quite easily the second best song from her recent album, behind Snälla Snälla, this is a rather gorgeous yet simple piano ballad, a duet between Caroline and Tommy. It’s always pleasant to hear this again, it’s actually the only track from the album I kept on my iPod  Their voices work very well together, Tommy’s more classic voice and Caroline’s well, not so normal voice. 8.5/10 A-08: Theatrical almost operatic vocals. Weird music, sounds like it’s a soundtrack to a film set in a dark forest at night or something with wolves howling in the background. Quite odd indeed, and the dog’s ears perked up when the violin came in! Not something I’d listen to out of choice but an interesting addition to the compilation and rather nice actually. 7.5/10 A-09: Another huge swing in sound here, back to indie now. Male vocalist, female backing harmonies in the chorus, which is noticeably better than the verses. However, it’s my least favourite track on here so far. Reminds me of a more shouty version of Black Kids who did ‘I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You’. 5/10 A-10: The final track of the ‘A’ section, although I’m not sure what the two sides of the album are supposed to represent. It’s pretty much a mish mash of sounds from start to finish on this album! This song’s far better than the last one. Male/female group from what I can hear. The verses are very relaxing to listen to and then it really kicks up a gear after that. I love the harmonies on the bridge and the chorus is very enjoyable. I shall be keeping this one on my iPod, most definitely. 8.5/10 B-11: The ‘B’ section begins! A very calm, acoustic indie song in Icelandic? Lots of ‘th’ sounds all over the place anyway. A soothing listen, pleasant. Not much more I can say about it. 7/10 B-12: Ólafur Arnalds? A rather gorgeous piano melody leads into a heart breaking violin and string section that builds and builds and then returns to its more simple piano beginning. James Horner would kill to have this on the Titanic 2 soundtrack, it would be perfect for the sadder moments in the film, although perhaps a bit of a sell out for Mr Arnalds! Absolutely gorgeous, a charm to listen to, the best thing on here so far. Beautiful. 9.5/10 B-13: Another violin led instrumental song which gradually builds up with piano and drums so more action packed than track 12. Probably the best example of cohesion on the entire album considering the track that came before it. I feel like I should find this a bit better but it’s a bit too short at 2 and a half minutes. Just as I was getting into it, it finished. 7/10 B-14: My lyric searches lead me to believe that this is Missing by Evanescence. I could tell straight away that it was the latter, Amy Lee’s voice is unmistakable. I own and love both of their studio albums but this isn’t on either hence my instant trip to Google to see what the song’s called and where it comes from. Not commercial enough to be a single but it’s still great with a brilliant bridge/chorus  The usual dramatic string section soars beneath Amy’s faultless vocals. Another fantastic discovery from this compilation! This is absolutely brilliant. 9/10 B-15: Well this is most certainly Kele Okereke singing. A Bloc Party song or another project of his, I don’t know? As an occasional Bloc Party fan, I have a few of their singles but never bought an album. It’s nice, but I prefer their more dance influenced songs to this. 7.5/10 B-16: A male indie song. The chorus/refrain chord structure is particularly enjoyable and saves this song from being average for me. The second half is distinctly better than the first for me. After initial indifference to this at the start of the song, I’d say that I really enjoyed it by the end, the melody is lovely even if it is very slightly reminiscent to ‘True Colors’. 8/10 B-17: A female vocal opens this mid-tempo electro-indie song with a male vocalist joining in later in what turns into a duet. Meanwhile, the instrumentation on the backing track gradually grows with drums and guitars gradually thrown into the mix. It’s *quite* good, but far from my favourite song on here, I won’t rush to hear it again. 7/10 B-18: Rockier than the last few tracks. I didn’t massively enjoy this or find it particularly memorable but it’s alright. Another foreign language song, there are certainly a ton of them on this compilation, lucky I don’t have a problem with them! 5/10 B-19: Lovely, some opera to close the album here! The only opera I’ve ever listened to is the ‘opera disc’ on Malena Ernman’s album, which I can’t say I was overly fond of. I’m sure fans of the genre would love it, but it’s not really my sort of thing, unless it’s mixed with Eurodance, a la La Voix or most of the other tracks on the ‘pop disc’ on the album. 5/10 Overall: So what does the title ‘Light 11’ signify then, Pavel? :P It became rather obvious whose compilation I received the moment I heard Caroline Af Ugglas. I’m her only other fan and I know it’s not my compilation  This is a very strong compilation and the Caroline song was in fact the only song I’d heard of beforehand, so 18 songs were completely new to me. My favourite discoveries were tracks 5, 6, 10, 14 and in particular 12. Ólafur, I’m a fan! Pretty much as much as I’d hoped to get out of this CD swap, it’s opened my eyes and ears to some songs I wouldn’t have listened to otherwise either because I haven’t got round to doing so (the Estonian NF song and Hafdis Huld) or because I don’t usually follow the genres. So thank you Ben for bringing the idea over from CHC, and thank you Pavel for creating this album for me :cheer:

So thank you Ben for bringing the idea over from CHC, and thank you Pavel for creating this album for me :cheer: Awww, what an amazing review! I'm so glad i introduced you to some songs, i did all i could <3 (Thank you randomizer :heehee:  ) First, 'Light 11' didn't really represent anything, i had been thinking for hours in order to make up the title and didn't find anything. So since my username is 'The Light' in Icelandic, i thought it'd be a good idea. '11' fitted there so much too! Sections A and B were supposed to divide the album into two equal halves, which they did btw. I know about these harsh genre changes from one song to another, but i did what i felt was right with the order! So, about the titles and band names... A-01: Alias Empire - Delayed By 5 // This building-up and sudden climax is what fascinates me in this song, pretty much the reason i included it! A-02: Anna Marie-David - Tu Te Reconnaîtras // Well, nothing more to say, except it's probably one of my favourite ESC songs ever. A-03: Theremyn_4 - Milnueve84 // Last minute inclusion to the CD. I've known this song not for so long too! (I've taken it from the Music Alliance thing that happens every month on blogs by the way!) A-04: Dum Dum Girls - Oh Mein Me // This is indeed the track with German lyrics from the amazing album that Dum Dum Girls released not so long ago. A-05: Hafdis Huld - I Almost Know A Criminal // Bingo! A-06: Iiris Vetik - Astronaut // Bingo again! :o A-07: Caroline Af Ugglas - Du Var Mitt Hjärta // I forgot you liked it too to be honest! :o I guess i confused you with Lewis, who liked this album as well! A-08: The Knife - Annie's Box // the song from their last not so critically approved album ( :( ), 'Tomorrow In A Year'. There's also the 'alt. vocal' version that is performed by Karen herself, but i felt i should include this version! Glad you liked it! A-09: Yes Cadets - Rufio // Another Music Alliance Pact song. They clearly pick some amazing stuff <3 A-10: Dans Republic - Afrikaans // And this one is from the MAP too lolz. I've once even considered it for BJSC. B-11: Valgeir Sigurðsson - Grylukvaedi // The Icelandic composer, this song is from the album, that, if i'm not mistaken, was a soundtrack for some movie. Other songs I'm not too keen on to be honest, this stood out completely. B-12: Ólafur Arnalds - Hægt, kemur ljósið // This is indeed Ólafur! His last album (although it's not arrived yet <_< ) is amazing, you should take a listen! B-13: Stoffer & Maskinen - Uden Titel // The first song from this band to feature here. It's nothing like anything else on their album, if you listen to the whole thing - this song feels just like a bridge between the previous and the following songs. But i HAD to include another song of S&M and so that it'd look like it's performed by another band etc. B-14: Evanescence - Missing // Well, this is indeed Evanescence, the B-side (or even a C-side  ) from 'Bring Me To Life' single released in Australia. B-15: Bloc Party - Idea For A Story // One of the songs that a casual person who follows BP wouldn't know. And to be honest it was obvious that I'd include Bloc Party and Evanescence to this CD  B-16: Cass McCombs - You Saved My Life // Was in my Top 10 songs of 2009. Heard it in the end of last year (i know!) first and instantly adored it to pieces. I'm glad you liked it. The album is not so good by the way :( B-17: Young Heretics - The Lost Loves // I don't know what to say, i thought you'd love it! :o B-18: Stoffer & Maskinen - Flader Mod Flader // This is the second track from this Danish pop/indie/electro band (of which i btw sent the song to BJSC this month :kink: ) that is my favourite discovery this year. I strongly recommend this to everybody. Ahh, i hope you liked 'Vi To Er Smeltet Sammen' though Rich :( B-19: Veronique Gens - When I'm Laid In Earth (Dido's lament from opera "Dido and Aeneas") // Quite needed to be included, i downloaded the compilation 'the most beautiful areas' or something like that while thinking about my BJSC entry and found this masterpiece! Again, amazing review, Rich! Thank you! <3

May 14, 201015 yr B-15: Bloc Party - Idea For A Story // One of the songs that a casual person who follows BP wouldn't know. Wow. Just checked it on Youtube. I hadn't heard this before. It's should have been on Intimacy. Good song.
May 14, 201015 yr With regards to me saying Iiris Vetik - Astronaut has a 90's vibe to it, I've now realised why - the piano melody reminds me of the piano hook in Deep by East 17 (one of a small handful of bearable singles they did); DRHB6OO2V2Y See - chav pop/rap has dominated the UK charts for 20 years!
May 14, 201015 yr It always does... initial reviews and then a slow and steady list of reactions from there onwards. I've just read the thread properly and realised who has mine... I do hope they're not disappointed as I think the recipient will know a lot of them already. Eeeek, pressure.

May 14, 201015 yr Okay so here's my review of the cd entitled "Wouldn't Want An Angel Watching Over You." I did not know any of the songs, which was quite exciting and scary at the same time. I hope I can do your musical tastes justice. 1. My cd started off with an instrumental track. The very beginning instantly reminded me of Queenberry's Too Young. It's a really great track. It kind of conveys a feeling of nostalgia... I don't know maybe that's just me. Anyway this proves to be a great intro to the cd. 9/10 2. Based on the first track I didn't really know what to expect on the rest of the cd. Track two however, is also really good. It's a beautifully painful slow song. Starts off really slow and simple and then around the 2 and a half minute mark its builds up to pure amazingness! It starts off in this very painful hurt place and ends up as almost like a testament for love. "The beauty of love as it was made to be." Great last line! 9/10 3. Track 3 starts off a capella with a harmony singing "Time won't save our souls." To be honest, I was like WTF at the intro. But then the song started and I slowly started liking it more and more as it played. I absolutely loved it by the third play. I love the old rock feel to it lol. Kinda reminds me of the theme song to True Blood. 8/10 4. After 3 great songs it's safe to say my expectations for the rest of the cd strongly increased. I'm afraid track 4 disappointed a bit. It kind of got lost among the cd's better songs. It's quite boring during a few parts but it's a nice enough song. It is way too long though. 5/10 5. Track 5 starts off really nicely. The intro kind of goes on a bit though. I love the harmonies during the verses and it is a nice sounding song but it doesn't really stands out. Like track 4 it got easily forgotten about as the rest of the cd played. 6/10 6. Okay so track 6 starts and I'm thinking its another wannabe 50/60s track (not really sure on the era but you know what I mean). But once that chorus hits I'm in heaven!! The chorus is quite epic and it gets even better once chorus 2 & 3 hit. I love that it sounds both old and modern at the same time. I totes love this song! 10/10 7. None of the first 6 songs were really my typical taste. Track 7 is a bit more my taste and it's also the first female sung song. It's really cute and fun. The chorus is very chill. 7/10 8. I really like the dance pop intro on track 8. I love the singer's voice as well. Is it a French accent I'm listening to? I do like the track but I feels like it drags on to much. I believe it's a remix, in which case I would love to listen to the original version. The last 2 minutes don't feel really necessary but I do like the song overall. 7/10 9. Great build up on this track that leads to a great intro. Once the "ooooh oooh ohhh" starts I know this is gonna be an epic track! This song is sooo catchy and has a great beat. It sounds like another song I've heard but I can't really place it. The bit before the second chorus is awesome, I guess its the second verse but it functions more like a bridge. I also really love the slowdown at the actual bridge and how it leads up to one last epic chorus. Pure perfection!! 9.5/10 10. I'm not really loving the intro to track 10, it just doesn't do anything for me. The voices also get kind of drowned out by the actual music. I do really like the bit where it repeats the same line over and over, I can't make out the lyric though ("I'm above this game"). I do like the lyrics I can make out though. It's a nice anti materialistic message. 7/10 11. The intro to this one was quite weird but once i hear the "rich bitch" on repeat it was all good. The song continues this way with different sounds repeating. A singer finally starts singing about hitting the money note like 2 minutes in. I love when it slows down and she sings "I just wanna beat Mariah" then she hits this huge Mariah whistle register note and then the guy voice is like "She hit the money note!" It was so epic lol. I need to know who sings this lol. 8/10 12. After the Money Note song I feel like the rest of the songs kind of lack a real identity as they all get lost amongst each other. At around the 2:30 mark of track twelve is when it starts getting quite good when the singer sings "These arms are mine." It builds to a great climax and an awesome ending. The first half of the song is quite forgettable though. 6.5/10 13. This track starts off with a funky intro but it just kind of goes on. It does get good once the voices come in. I quite like the verse but then theres another instrumental bit and I don't feel like it adds much to the song. This song's play time really make it hard to listen to. The sung bits are really good and a section of the instrumental during the last 40 or so seconds is good but overall the song is just way too long. 7/10 14. Unlike track 13, 14 gets right to the point really short intro and verses and a quite epic chorus. I feel like there's 5 minutes of awesomeness packed into a 2 minute song. The chorus is sooo effing catchy. 9/10 15. Track 15 starts off really well but I feel like it's really low quality, I think the song is intentionally this way but it kind of detracts from my ability to enjoy it. I like the distance and detached feel to the vocals but the music itself should be in better quality as it's actually quite good. The spoken part is golden as well. Really great track but the quality kind of bugs. 8/10 16. I like the music on this track but I really don’t like the singer’s voice. He sounds drunk and not too bright lol. I would probably enjoy this song a lot more if it was someone else singing it cos his voice is really grating on my ears. The piano bit at the bridge is f***ing epic when juxtaposed with the hard rock guitars! Overall the greatness in the song does overshadow the $h!tty singer. 8/10 17. Okay! Final song time! I have to say after what’s been a mostly great album, the final track is really a let down. Possibly the weakest track on the album, actually. I just can’t get into it at all and I can’t blame it on the genre since this album has done a really good job at single handedly expanding my musical tastes. I don’t know there’s not really much for me to say about this track because every time I listen to the album again I totally forget about it until I get to it. 4/10 Overall I'll give it an 8 out of 10 as I thoroughly enjoyed it and the great songs I liked completely overshadow the few I didn't I would like to say a huge thank you to whoever compiled this great cd. I admit that my tastes are usually restricted to that within the pop world. I told myself to have an open mind but at the same time thought I wouldn't like anything on the cd. However I've been completely proven wrong. I love many of the songs and would even call 2 of them total classics. This single cd really has opened my ears to new types of music I never would have listened to before. Thank you! Edited May 14, 201015 yr by shakilover
