Okay so here's my review of the cd entitled "Wouldn't Want An Angel Watching Over You." I did not know any of the songs, which was quite exciting and scary at the same time. I hope I can do your musical tastes justice.

I would like to say a huge thank you to whoever compiled this great cd. I admit that my tastes are usually restricted to that within the pop world. I told myself to have an open mind but at the same time thought I wouldn't like anything on the cd. However I've been completely proven wrong. I love many of the songs and would even call 2 of them total classics. This single cd really has opened my ears to new types of music I never would have listened to before. Thank you!

This CD was mine. I've got to say when I saw you had mine I wasn't too sure what to expect. I've not noticed you around here loads and don't really know your music taste, I had a look at your personal chart and realised that it was completely different to the majority of this CD and that you'd probably never heard of any of the songs on it. I certainly didn't expect the review to be so positive, so I'm delighted it went to someone who's appreciated it and made some discoveries! :D

I shall do a fuller reply on the tracks shortly, but for now here's the tracklist.

01 The XX 'Intro'

02 Mumford & Sons 'Sigh No More'

03 Black Rebel Motorcycle Club 'Shuffle Your Feet'

04 Elbow 'Any Day Now'

05 James Yuill 'No Surprise'

06 Codeine Velvet Club 'Hollywood'

07 The Delgados 'Everybody Come Down'

08 Sally Shapiro 'Looking At The Stars'

09 Ash 'Arcadia'

10 Animal Collective 'My Girls'

11 Camille 'Money Note'

12 The Big Pink 'Velvet'

13 Deerhunter 'Nothing Ever Happened'

14 Monkey Swallows The Universe 'Matterhoney'

15 The Horrors 'Who Can Say'

16 The Hold Steady 'Stuck Between Stations'

17 The National 'Mistaken For Strangers'

I know exactly who has mine and I'm looking forward to reading the review, the last one I sent in to ChC was lazy and would have appealed to virtually no one else here but me

I'll be posting my review of "Who Needs Artwork" at some point, recognised two of the artists already and although what I've heard isn't really to my taste I've actually quite enjoyed it.

Review:

Track 1: A very short and loud and manic Industrial Rock start ….. I recognise this it’s Nine Inch Nails’/Saul Williams’ Gun Shots By Computer. 8/10

Track 2: I don’t know it. Musically it reminds me of an uninspired early UNKLE track. Pretty short and rather unmemorable track featuring frantic rapping over an industrial rock background. 3/10

Track 3: Oh I recognise this. Unfortunately I have a whole negative vibe about Patrick Wolf and his try hard pretensions. To be fair the song (Hard Times) works a hell of a lot better without the day glo video and exaggerated early 1980s posturing that makes me want to punch him. 6/10

Track 4: I really like this. Another Industrial rap/rock but with a very strong melodic melody to it. It kind of reminds me of Linkin’ Park with two male vocalists trying to out rant each other. But I can’t decipher a single lyric in the entire song. The chorus could be “I’ll help you Muhammad” for all I know…… 7/10

Track 5: … and the noise does not let up ….. a very loud Prodigy type track where the female vocalist seems to have the word Nice utilized over and over and over again. 7/10

Track 6: A change of mood …… its that Katy Perry v Bloc Party mash up of I Kissed A Girl and Banquet. Of course it’s really good and works very well. 8/10

Track 7: A very frantic rhythmic track, with a machine gun drum beat. Featuring a male and a female on vocals. Reminds me of the Pixies Surfer Rosa album, but is clearly a lot more modern. Another track I can’t make out the lyrics properly. 7/10

Track 8: Oh it’s a cover of my all time favourite artist’s transatlantic #1 hit in 1983 “Let’s Dance”. Being a big fan of the (now retired?) legendary artist, I of course know this is recorded by Sunderland’s finest act (The Futureheads) whom did a rather splendid cover of the title track of the best album of my all time favourite female artist Kate Bush. As covers go this is perfectly good. 8/10

Track 9: I really should know this. It sounds like a new wave/punk rock track. Like a not so good Joe Strummer The Clash track. The drumming is a bit off the beat though. 7/10

Track 10: Oh is this the less talented male version of Amy Winehouse? It sounds like a Pete Doherty vocal – is this a Babyshambles track on a ramshackle 3rd rate Radiohead meets Ragga Rock stylee. This track badly needs a producer to sort this out because there is a good tune trying to break out of this musical mess. The last minute is clearly inspired by The Smiths’ Death of a Disco Dancer. 6/10

Track 11: Now this is more my typical type of indie guitar rock that I like. Interesting male vocals and unexpected chord progressions. Pleasingly I don’t recognise this at all, and would love to know who this is. 8/10

Track 12: A kind of Irish acoustic fiddle track, with a male vocalist using way to many lyrics in too short a time to make them fit ….. this dirge rambles on for nearly six minutes. 3/10

Track 13: Acoustic jaunty guitar intro; and nice use of fiddle. Reminds me of a bizarre cross between the Lostprophets and Ben Folds……. This is Streetlife Manifesto covering an old US punk song???? 9/10

Track 14: Another track that does not hit the volume 11. Lovely rhythmic guitar. A really nice track that does not seem to possess a chorus until right to the end. I really think I should recognise who this is from the vocals. 8/10

Track 15: A more frantic rock track that belongs to Kerrang. Rather unremarkable. OK but not much more, and I don’t like the male’s vocals much 5/10

Track 16: Oooh horns, punchy vocals, very early 1980s Postcard era Rickenbacker guitars; and I like it when it goes dub Reggae Rock The Police syle ….. shame about the male vocalist, and the melody. Pity this could have been really good. Of course its Goldfinger – Superman. 6/10.

Track 17: Another track that wants to be, but is a pale imitation of The Clash meets Rage Against The Machine. Awful male vocals. I’m starting to lose the will to live. 4/10

Track 18: 77 seconds of thrash metal, and unintelligent shouting. Nice! 2/10

Track 19: Oh jesus, come back track 17 all is forgiven. This is starts with over 150 seconds of ear rape at Volume 11. Awful tuneless racket of noise and screams. Then just when it has scared off others it descends into 90 seconds of something marginally more melodic, and certainly different. But still the drums are way too loud. 4/10

Track 20: …. And yet more primal screaming, that I normally would not care to listen to. Thankfully it quickly descends into something rather more melodic with some rather nice guitar playing. Again I feel that I really should be able to recognise the act. But the cumulative pounding of this CD is starting to take its toll on my brain. 5/10

Track 21: Starts off quietly. Another ska rock track? This is quiet good actually musically it reminds me of The Specials which is a very good thing. But I don’t recognise it at all. But it sounds very British. 7/10

Track 22: Starts off with a sample, followed by a good bassline. Yet another track with a ska beat. This actually ticks a few boxes for me, due to the sinewy beat and jittery feel to the track. But I don’t like the (US?) male vocalist. I probably would have preferred this as an instrumental. 7/10

Track 23: Piano intro … I’ve heard this before, and feel I should recognise it. It reminds me of Muse a lot. A very hymn like anthemic feel to this piano ballad. At least this CD has saved the best to last, and this piano led track ends too quickly. 9/10

I think I could guess whose CD this is (from the first track ), I leave others to decide from my review if they can come to the same conclusion. I think it is fair to say that it is probably a good thing I got this CD compared to some of the other posters.

I'm really nervous about whoever has my CD, everyone else's seems so good. I'll do some revision, then I'll listen to my CD and review it later today. ;D I got 'Joyce' btw :heehee:
I wonder if it includes anything by the Joyce! :o

 Possibly, I think it is her face that features on my CD's album cover! :o

I'm already about 3 tracks in and I like it already. ;D

This sounds like my kind of cd. Any chance of a link to the download please, if nobody minds

Loved your compilation Severin.

Best (new) tracks for me were Cranes and Devilish Presley.

I always meant to listen to Cranes more closely but the Minnie Mouse vocals put me off somewhat.

However Dada 331 is a great track.

Okay so here's my review of the cd entitled "Wouldn't Want An Angel Watching Over You." I did not know any of the songs, which was quite exciting and scary at the same time. I hope I can do your musical tastes justice.

1. My cd started off with an instrumental track. The very beginning instantly reminded me of Queenberry's Too Young. It's a really great track. It kind of conveys a feeling of nostalgia... I don't know maybe that's just me. Anyway this proves to be a great intro to the cd.

9/10

The xx 'Intro' - This is the introduction on the xx's self titled debut album from last year. I'd always enjoyed the song and I think it's as good a piece of instrumentation as they've done, it'd be weaker with vocals IMO. I wasn't going to put this on, but I saw them perform it live on TV last week and thought it would be a good intro.

2. Based on the first track I didn't really know what to expect on the rest of the cd. Track two however, is also really good. It's a beautifully painful slow song. Starts off really slow and simple and then around the 2 and a half minute mark its builds up to pure amazingness! It starts off in this very painful hurt place and ends up as almost like a testament for love. "The beauty of love as it was made to be." Great last line!

9/10

Mumford & Sons 'Sigh No More' - Since the turn of the year I've really grown to love Mumford & Sons album, I can never decide which of about 8 songs is my favourite on it but this is pretty close. I included this as I love the way it builds up to their finish. I think their lyrics are generally quite excellent, I love them in this song, they often get quite spiritual but don't go into dodgy teritory like they could.

3. Track 3 starts off a capella with a harmony singing "Time won't save our souls." To be honest, I was like WTF at the intro. But then the song started and I slowly started liking it more and more as it played. I absolutely loved it by the third play. I love the old rock feel to it lol. Kinda reminds me of the theme song to True Blood.

8/10

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club 'Shuffle Your Feet' - From their 2005 album 'Howl'. I've always quite liked them but this album (mostly in the same vein as this song) is by far my favourite. Their use of blues, gospel and country throughout makes it a very interesting album. Howl is great too.

4. After 3 great songs it's safe to say my expectations for the rest of the cd strongly increased. I'm afraid track 4 disappointed a bit. It kind of got lost among the cd's better songs. It's quite boring during a few parts but it's a nice enough song. It is way too long though.

5/10

Elbow 'Any Day Now' - This type of song isn't going to be to everyone's taste, over 6 minutes long and it's quite repetitive.

5. Track 5 starts off really nicely. The intro kind of goes on a bit though. I love the harmonies during the verses and it is a nice sounding song but it doesn't really stands out. Like track 4 it got easily forgotten about as the rest of the cd played.

6/10

James Yuill 'No Surprise' - I can see why this could potentially get lost, I really like this song, I think it has a great use of electronic instrumentation.

6. Okay so track 6 starts and I'm thinking its another wannabe 50/60s track (not really sure on the era but you know what I mean). But once that chorus hits I'm in heaven!! The chorus is quite epic and it gets even better once chorus 2 & 3 hit. I love that it sounds both old and modern at the same time. I totes love this song!

10/10

Codeine Velvet Club 'Hollywood' - Codeine Velvet Club are the new band of ex-Fratellis singer Jon Lawler. They are certainly very 60s influenced. This is one of my favourite songs of this year so far, and I think the album is fantastic too, their voices compliment each other so well, stronger than the Fratellis. Also try

and The Black Roses. Really glad you like this. :D

7. None of the first 6 songs were really my typical taste. Track 7 is a bit more my taste and it's also the first female sung song. It's really cute and fun. The chorus is very chill.

7/10

The Delgados 'Everybody Come Down' - I discovered this song on a CD swap elsewhere a couple of years ago. It's a fantastic simple pop song!

8. I really like the dance pop intro on track 8. I love the singer's voice as well. Is it a French accent I'm listening to? I do like the track but I feels like it drags on to much. I believe it's a remix, in which case I would love to listen to the original version. The last 2 minutes don't feel really necessary but I do like the song overall.

7/10

Sally Shapiro 'Looking At The Stars' - This isn't actually a remix but the proper version, I can see why it would feel like one though. It could possibly be a bit shorter but it's still my favourite song off the album from last year. She's Swedish rather than French.

9. Great build up on this track that leads to a great intro. Once the "ooooh oooh ohhh" starts I know this is gonna be an epic track! This song is sooo catchy and has a great beat. It sounds like another song I've heard but I can't really place it. The bit before the second chorus is awesome, I guess its the second verse but it functions more like a bridge. I also really love the slowdown at the actual bridge and how it leads up to one last epic chorus. Pure perfection!!

9.5/10

Ash 'Arcadia' - Ash used to be a fairly big act in the UK with top 10 singles and number one albums but they've fallen off the radar in recent years. Last year they started to release a new single every fortnight, each single coinciding with a letter, this one was C and they're now up to P. I think Ash are really underrated and they're definitely at their best doing stomping anthems like this. 'Girl From Mars', 'Walking Barefoot' and 'Burn Baby Burn' are also all fantastic.

10. I'm not really loving the intro to track 10, it just doesn't do anything for me. The voices also get kind of drowned out by the actual music. I do really like the bit where it repeats the same line over and over, I can't make out the lyric though ("I'm above this game"). I do like the lyrics I can make out though. It's a nice anti materialistic message.

7/10

Animal Collective 'My Girls' - I adore this song, it's my favourite on this compliation. Their album from last year which this is taken from is perfection from start to finish. I love how many different sounds happen at the same time. The repeated lyric is "on my father's grave", "But to provide for mine who ask. I will, with heart, on my father's grave...."

11. The intro to this one was quite weird but once i hear the "rich bitch" on repeat it was all good. The song continues this way with different sounds repeating. A singer finally starts singing about hitting the money note like 2 minutes in. I love when it slows down and she sings "I just wanna beat Mariah" then she hits this huge Mariah whistle register note and then the guy voice is like "She hit the money note!" It was so epic lol. I need to know who sings this lol.

8/10

Camille 'Money Note' - I put my two favourite tracks together in the middle, I adored this from when I first heard it and it just doesn't get boring. It's so random in places and utterly fabulous.

12. After the Money Note song I feel like the rest of the songs kind of lack a real identity as they all get lost amongst each other. At around the 2:30 mark of track twelve is when it starts getting quite good when the singer sings "These arms are mine." It builds to a great climax and an awesome ending. The first half of the song is quite forgettable though.

6.5/10

The Big Pink 'Velvet' - This is my favourite song of 2010 so far (even though it is actually a re-issue of a single a year ago). The second half of this is definitely better than the first but I love the way it builds up throughout.

13. This track starts off with a funky intro but it just kind of goes on. It does get good once the voices come in. I quite like the verse but then theres another instrumental bit and I don't feel like it adds much to the song. This song's play time really make it hard to listen to. The sung bits are really good and a section of the instrumental during the last 40 or so seconds is good but overall the song is just way too long.

7/10

Deerhunter 'Nothing Ever Happened' - When I first heard this I wasn't too fussed on it but it continued to grow on me and still does to be honest. The song being in two halves is great, Bradford Cox has a good voice but the intrumental half at the end is epic.

14. Unlike track 13, 14 gets right to the point really short intro and verses and a quite epic chorus. I feel like there's 5 minutes of awesomeness packed into a 2 minute song. The chorus is sooo effing catchy.

9/10

Monkey Swallows The Universe 'Matterhoney' - I put this in because it's a little bit different, especially in comparison to the rest of the second half. A short 2 minute lively pop song, I think their album was excellent.

15. Track 15 starts off really well but I feel like it's really low quality, I think the song is intentionally this way but it kind of detracts from my ability to enjoy it. I like the distance and detached feel to the vocals but the music itself should be in better quality as it's actually quite good. The spoken part is golden as well. Really great track but the quality kind of bugs.

8/10

The Horrors 'Who Can Say' - The spoken part of this is excellent, I adore the lyrics.

And when I told her another girl had caught my eye

She cried

And then I kissed her with a kiss

That could only mean goodbye

16. I like the music on this track but I really don’t like the singer’s voice. He sounds drunk and not too bright lol. I would probably enjoy this song a lot more if it was someone else singing it cos his voice is really grating on my ears. The piano bit at the bridge is f***ing epic when juxtaposed with the hard rock guitars! Overall the greatness in the song does overshadow the $h!tty singer.

8/10

The Hold Steady 'Stuck Between Stations' - Epic is certainly something I'd use to describe this song. This was the song that ignited my love this band three years ago. I love Craig Finn's voice but can see why it might grate.

17. Okay! Final song time! I have to say after what’s been a mostly great album, the final track is really a let down. Possibly the weakest track on the album, actually. I just can’t get into it at all and I can’t blame it on the genre since this album has done a really good job at single handedly expanding my musical tastes. I don’t know there’s not really much for me to say about this track because every time I listen to the album again I totally forget about it until I get to it.

4/10

The National 'Mistaken For Strangers' - A shame the album finished with a song you don't like.

Overall I'll give it an 8 out of 10 as I thoroughly enjoyed it and the great songs I liked completely overshadow the few I didn't

Thank you!

I'm really pleased with how much you enjoyed this album, I'm so glad this ended up with you. Thankyou for such a fantastic review, fantastic that you enjoyed it so much! :D

James Yuill <3 Deerhunter <3 Camille <3 Such amazing songs, I already knew them but it doesn't really make it any different! I'd have loved this CD had I been set up with RFC!

This was mine, rather obviously lol, i'm glad you enjoyed a lot of it, wasnt thinking so many tracks would be guessed, but then i didnt know you would get my cd! anyway here are the tracks:

1. Saul Williams - Gunshots by Computer taken from 'Year Zero Remixed (Nine Inch Nails)' 2007 - didnt think you would of heard this, glad you have heard of Saul or the whole fantastic remix album, if you like this I suggest checking out Saul's fantastiv album "The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust'.

2. P.O.S - Terrorish taken from 'Never Better' 2009 - you obviously didnt like this so not much to say lol.

3. Patrick Wolf - Hard Times (Alec Empire remix) taken from rcrdlbl.com 2009 - you obviously didnt notice this was a remix lol, maybe thats what made it better, not it being without the video?

4. Transplants - Quick Death (Error remix) taken from 'Punk-O-Rama 8' compilation 2003 Transplants are if you dont know Travis Barker (blink-182), Tim Armstrong (Rancid) and Rob Ashton, the remixers, Error are Atticus Ross (NIN programmer and producer is what is he most known for), Brett Gurewitz (Bad Religion) and Leopold Ross.

5. You love Her Coz She's Dead - Young Tender Hearts Beat Fast (YLHCSD Nostep rmx) taken from 'Young Tender Hearts Beat Fast' single 2009 - dont really have anything to say on your comment.

6. Bloc Party vs Katy Perry - I Kissed A Banquet - a mighty obvious one, but it's mixed so well.

7. Be Your Own Pet - Spill taken from 'Damn Damn Leash' EP 2005 - I love this band but sadly they have split up now.

8. The Futureheads - Let's Dance (David Bowie cover) taken from Q magazine 'The Eighties' compilation 2006 - obviously you love Bowie and you like The Futureheads, so good pick on me. going with The Futureheads cover theme, i'll suggest to you their cover of 'The Lovecats' by The Cure:

which is actually on another magazine compilation which has a track featured on my CD.

9. Turbo Fruits - No Drugs To Use taken from 'Turbo Fruits' 2007 this is actually Jonas Stein and John Eatherly formerly of Be Your Own Pet of track 7.

10. The Libertines - Cyclops taken from 'Cant Stand Me Now' single 2002 - indeed a Pete Doherty track, who you obviously dislike, so we'll leave it there lol.

11. Pete and The Pirates - Disco taken from 'Wait Stop Begin' EP 2006 there you go, that's who it is, i'm not sure if you have heard of them, but this track is before they had any exposure really, great little band from my home town, if you like this i'd highly reccomend you check out their album 'Little Death'.

12. Jeffrey Lewis - Williamsburg Will Oldham Horror taken from 'City and Eastern Songs' 2005 you clearly didnt like this one so we'll move on...

13. Streetlight Manifesto - Linoleum (NoFX cover) taken from '99 Songs of Revolution: volume 1' 2010 - you sort of guessed it, it's StreetLIGHT not streetLIFE though lol, and yeah an oldish (well, 90's) US punk track, i'm impressed you know of this band tbh, and they are a brilliant band, and I dont know if you have heard them before but you obviously like this, their best album imo is 'Everything Goes Numb' but I will give you this track which is another cover, this time of "Me and Julio Down The Schoolyard" by Simon and Garfunkel from the same album: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNT85Mdw7Ok

14. Alkaline Trio - Cut Here (The Cure cover) taken from 'Pictures of You: A Tribute To The Cure' NME compilation 2009 - bit suprised you didnt realise this was a Cure song, you dont strike me as a Alkaline Trio listener, but you obviously enjoyed this cover so i'd reccomend their album 'From Here To Infirmary' which is one of my favourite albums ever, although has a very different feel to this track though.

15. The Gaslight Anthem - 1930 taken from 'Sink or Swim' 2007 - you obciously dont like this band then lol.

16. Goldfinger - Superman taken from 'Hang-Ups' 1997 - didnt think you would know Goldfinger, personally this is one of my favourite tracks ever, but I think nostalgia+Tony Hawk's Pro Skater on the playstation is why.

17. Operation Ivy - Unity taken from 'Energy' 1989 - you obviously disliked it alot, I will say though that it's Tim Armstrong from Rancid's old ska punk band, and he also featured on track 4.

18. Minor Threat - Guilty of Being White taken from 'In My Eyes' EP 1981 - you hated this alot lol, obviously not a hardcore punk fan, might be interesting to note that Ian Mackaye from this band went on to create Fugazi.

19. The Dillinger Escape Plan (feat Mike Patton) - Hollywood Squares taken from 'Irony Is A Dead Scene' 2002 - you obviously didnt get on with this, features the amazing Mike Patton from Faith No More though.

20. Blakfish - Your Hair's Straight But Your Boyfriend Aint taken from 'Champions' 2009 - I love this album alot. seems you arent the sort of person who likes pounding music then lol, unluckily for you I like pounding in my music :P sadly this band split up earlier this year.

21. The JB Conspiracy - The Patriot taken from 'This Machine' 2007 - a really good British ska punk band I discovered when they supported Streetlight Manifesto in London in March 2009, would be shocked if you knew it as they are really unknown, I would suggest checking out the album this is from, 'This Machine' I think it's a great album.

22. Sublime - April 29, 1992 (Miami) taken from 'Sublime' 1996 - got nothing to say on this really, but they do have better tracks ('Seed', 'Santeria', 'Wrong Way'), pretty good album it's from.

23. The New Regime - Time Erase taken from 'Coup' 2008 - this is actually Ilan Rubin's solo project who was the drummer for Nine Inch Nails during last year's tour aswell as formerly drumming for lostprophets, he is insanely talented, especially seeing how he is only 21!!!! and he must of been only about 19/20 when he recorded this album, it came out when he was 20 anyway, which is insane seeing how i'm 18. it reminds me of Muse aswell funnily enough, I have always thought that. As you loved it so much you should check out the album, but for now here is another track I love of his:

I find it mental that at the age of 20-21 he was touring the world with a band as big as Nine Inch Nails, I hope he has a healthy musical career in front of him, he has the talent for it.

Anyone who wants to hear my CD i'm more than happy for the link to be shared.

PM'd those who have asked for my CD so far.

and to the creator of 'From Days to Days', I probaly wont get round to reviewing for another week or so as I have an exam Wednesday/have to hand in Graphics exam prep on Thursday, so i'm just too busy right now, so just hold on lol.

James Yuill <3 Deerhunter <3 Camille <3 Such amazing songs, I already knew them but it doesn't really make it any different! I'd have loved this CD had I been set up with RFC!

I do think there are quite a few people that would've known the majority of my album and whilst I'd have been pleased because they'll probably have liked it, I wouldn't have introduced as much.

I really love my CD so far. I can't figure it out if it's retro tracks ahead of there times or contemporary songs inspired by the 80's & 90's. Either way it's really good, and there's a good Bjork-on-acid sounding track. I have a hunch of who may have made it, but I'll leave it for the review.
