...but not with their first RELEASE (i.e. released a non-charting single/album before their #1).

The only artists I can think of are:

SINGLES:

Tony Di Bart (original release of The Real Thing peaked at #83)

So Solid Crew (released ineligible single Oh No in Dec 2000 - would have charted at #13)

Arctic Monkeys (IBYLGOTD was their first 'proper' release - suggesting that had released ineligible / limited singles beforehand)

Lily Allen (released flop single LDN a few months ago)

ALBUMS:

Wu-Tang Clan (Enter The Wu-Tang never reached top 75)

Any others?

Tubeway Army - Are "Friends" Electric. There had been a few singles released prior to this single.

Didn't Abba have a single released in 1973 which flopped? Prior to Waterloo, of course.

Culture Club - White Boy was their first single, it missed the top 75, then "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" reached #1.

I'm sure there will be more...

This is incorrect. She released it as a limited edition 7".

Actually that's correct I got an article in MW magazine.

In that case Nizlopi qualifies, as the original release of JCB Song only reached #160.

Before charting with King Of My Castle in 1999, Wamdue Project had a number of releases (including the original version of King...)

There are probably loads... McFly, Shayne Ward, Westlife all people like that.
Take That - I can't remember what the song was called but there first one flopped big style.

paul think you'd better amend the thread title as noone is bothering to read your first post.

however kylie could be put to the list as think the locomotion was her first ever single

yes in July 1987 it was released originally on mushroom records. (i have just looked) in oz

she did the celts and clan nads

yes it was on viking legacy. i mentioned it the first time round when i thought she was swedish

Didnt sandi thom like miss the top50 or something with IWIWAPR last year\?

Yes it did, from polyhex.com

15/10/2005 Sandi Thom I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker (With Flowers In My Hair) {55}->1

27/05/2006 Sandi Thom I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker (With Flowers In My Hair) {2006} 15-2-{1}-2-2-3-4-6->8

I thought the question was about acts who had their first hit with a #1, but had previous singles that missed the charts. Some of the songs mentioned here are the same song, but one that missed the top 75 first time around. Which is not the same thing!

For example, 9pm by ATB was released twice before it reached #1. Each time it missed the top 75. Eventually it reached #1. It's not the same as ATB having a previous single that didn't chart.

(which happpened anyway!)
