'Counting Down The Days' Amazing pop song and a very nice follow up to the beautiful 'Shiver'. Deserved better than a measly #23 peak :manson:

NO. This was a deliberate delay to remind everyone that this was indeed a Shoat countdown, and that completion before July 2014 would actually be a relative success story.

05. Want (7.76)

(#88 in 2009)

This is quite the turnout. Want was actually WINNING the entire thing at one point until the last few votes, can you believe. Despite not even reaching the top 75 singles chart, Want has been placed amongst Natalie's best five releases. I don't know if that's testament to the quality of the track, or a damning indictment on the overall output of Natalie's entire career.

To be honest, along with the Royksopp/Robyn The Girl And The Robot collaboration, this ranks as one of the two "HOW-THE-f***-DID-THIS-FLOP" moments of last year. It seemed to have everything going for it. Superstar songwriter Chris Martin? Check. Dramatic re-invention, shunning the MOR guitar pop of old in favour of a Radio 1 friendly sound? Check. Buzz single (Wild About It) to stir up anticipation? Check. A classy and urgent dancefloor turn? Check. Critical acclaim? Check. Natalie Imbruglia naked? Check. Top selling smash hit? Aah...

It's all so very bizarre and unfair. The one time that Natalie actually seems to show an interest and put some effort into her career, and it's met with tumbleweed.

Well, we only have ourselves to blame next time Natalie takes ten years to fart out an acoustic ballad without a video.

:w00t: Want is one of Nats finest moments, deserved to be a massive hit, I really adore this one.

Want is very fabulous indeed but I don't think it's that 'radio 1 friendly', truth be told. It's a very dark, sparse production and although it's catchy it's more of a grower n' a creeper than a 'slap you up with a giant hook' type of song. I did think the fantastic video would help make it a hit but they left it WAY too late. It came out like a week before the song if I recall. Two or three weeks earlier and the song would've gone top 40 with ease.

They removed the great bridge for the single version though, which displeased me as it's one of my favourite bridges plus it made the chorus sound like it arrived too suddenly.

I was a bit gutted Satisfied and When You're Sleeping never got single status, those were my two favourites on that album aside from Shiver.

Sanctuary would have made a good single  CDTD had so many songs that could have done well

Very pleased to see Counting Down The Days do so well, I was absoultely gutted to see it flop outside the top 20 (though Natalie would be much grateful for a #23 peak nowadays). Stunning song, which i've often thought of as being very underated but great to see maybe not

I like Want, and maybe I didnt give it enough love at the time of release but I disagree about it being her 5th best single. I wasnt overly shocked at it's flopage, Radio 1 were never going to support Natalie unless she went all Furtado on us and had rappers popping up everywhere.

Well I say Radio 1 friendly in that it would have had more appeal to them than her past Radio 2 MOR offerings. I do think if it had been Kylie performing Want, Radio 1 would have been all over it.

That's the thing, Radio 1 playlist is more based on the artist themselves and their profile than the song. When Radio 1 don't playlist an artist anymore, that's it, they're never playlisted again.

Referring to an earlier discussion, 'Satisfied' should have been a single from Counting Down The Days. :( I was actually gutted at the time when that didn't see a release.

Well I'm in a Natalie mood, so let's resume this!

Tie at #3...

03. Big Mistake (8.00)

(#2 in 1998)

Well I've already raved about this in the "Discuss What You Are Listening To" thread, but I guess I shall have to repeat myself for the sake of commentary.

I think this is sadly overshadowed by Torn, for this is frankly wonderful, and perhaps her finest moment in her singles catalogue. Dark, threatening, and ballsy with a powerful Garbage-esque chorus. It's odd hearing this, and remembering that at one point in time Natalie Imbruglia came perilously close to having an ATTITUDE. It wasn't to last of course, but nonetheless this was proof that there was some actual substance to her as opposed to a pretty face from Neighbours.

03. Wrong Impression (8.00)

(#10 in 2002)

NU TORN. Or so a few foolish people claimed back in '02, before this scraped into the charts at #10. OH WELL

And yes, once again I'm pretty much having to repeat what I've said in t'other thread.

Like Big Mistake, this one isn't really remembered by the general public all that well (WHO ARE YOU?), which is a little short of criminal. This is a thoroughly uplifting slice of summer pop, complimented by an appealing but simple feelgood video (Natalie is stun-gorge in this btw). Magic should be ALL OVER THIS.

I have to say I'm not too sure why they felt the need to release a "pop" remix, given there's barely any difference to the album version. If anything, the chorus actually sounds a little weaker.

So which Nat track will claim the top spot? Pop classic Torn or her last "big" hit Shiver?
