Tomorrow (2 June) is the closing date for nominations for this year's Mercury Prize with the shortlist being announced on 20 July. What albums do you think will be nominated. A special gold star for anyone who can come up with one of the obligatory surprise nominations such as last year's Speech Debelle.

I think Mumford & Sons will probably make the list. I'll need to look back at the year's releases (July to July) to see whether anything else comes to mind.

Mumford & Sons will get nominated for sure. There's no 'big' releases like Kasabian and Florence last year that instantly spring to mind. I know for a fact that my favourite album of the year so far won't get nominated but if the Mercury looked a little further afield than usual, Lostprophets would make a great nomination. "The Betrayed" is an absolute masterpiece

The Mercury's are a joke, I dont get why so many people still take them seriously.

but Foals ftw.

OK, early predictions:

Four Tet - There Is Love In You

Marina & The Diamonds - The Family Jewels

These New Puritons - Hidden

Two Door Cinema Club - Tourist History

John Powell - How to Train Your Dragon

Laura Marling - I Speak Because I Can

Field Music - Field Music (Measure)

Mumford & Sons - Sigh No More

f*** Buttons - Tarot Sport

The xx - xx

Biffy Clyro - Only Revolutions

^ All must be serious contenders for nominations +

To be released before the closing date of July 12th.

M.I.A. – /\/\ /\ Y /\

Kele - The Boxer

Rox – Memoirs

James Yuill - Movement In A Storm

I'm assuming Caribou - Swim is inelligible (Canadian) even though he is based and records in London.

Four Tet - There Is Love In You

f*** Buttons - Tarot Sport

The xx - xx

These three would deserve the win.

I'm assuming that Damon Albarm won't be putting Gorillaz up for nomination, so there goes perhaps the most obvious choice out the window. Tunng's 'And Then We Saw Land' might have an outside chance, as well as North Atlantic Oscillation's 'Grappling Hooks.'

As much as it pains me to say it, I very much doubt that Two Door Cinema Club will be nominated for the Mercury Prize, the album's not as strong as I thought it would be in hindsight.

I'd prefer if Ellie Goulding and Delphic didn't get nominated. Disappointing albums. Editors might get nominated.

Yes, there's agreement here...although I really don't like the XX, I'm sure they will be nominated.

f*** Buttons should definitely win, but, stupidly, their name will probably hamper their chances. Silly, I know.

Expect The Big Pink to also be nominated despite being pretty crap.

Marina has to get a nod (and I think she will), Family Jewels is a masterpiece of modern pop, but I don't think Ellie will for some reason. Mumford and Sons are obviously gonna be nominated

I hope Leddra Chapman gets nominated :o, she might stand a chance - especially as Lisa Hannigan was nominated last year.

Maybe she's a bit mainstream/radio 2 though :P

Marina has to be nominated (and win)

Mumford and sons are likely, and biffy clyro, the xx, kele and M.I.A. would be great but probs won't all happen

Ellie and Delphic would be nice but their albums aren't great

I have a feeling that if they're nominated, the xx might win

With all the hype around Mumford and Sons (and no, I don't get it at all, myself), I can see them nominated and a serious contender.

And surely Massive Attack's brilliant comeback Heligoland can't be ignored.... I disagree with Four Tet and The xx, though - both albums I bought, neither album I like one bit. For me a definite case of don't believe the hype.

But these awards have shrunken to nothing these past few years, they're nowhere near as important or influential as they once were... and this is due to increasingly poor selections and some God-awful winners.

Abysmal judges normally. The year the Klaxons won the judging panel looked like somebody had wandered backstage at Koko and asked anyone with a stupid enough haircut and "indie credentials" if they were free to do a quick survey.

I like XX. It's intimate and charming. I still dont like Heligoland.

After the disaster last year I think the judges will know they have to pick a well known/respected artist this time round or the prize will just lose all credibility

Was the Speach Debelle album rubbish?

It was incredibly average, even by Mercury winners standards. It then led to friction between Speech and Ninja Tune when a bunch of new "agents" started telling her that her label had wronged her because the award did not translate into sales.
