I fail to see how Kit Downes Trio have been nominated, I've heard a couple of their tracks - there're way better piano-jazz groups.

They probably didn't enter. They pulled out of the 2001 competition.
The XX so deserve to win - Epic album that will sell for years to come, Other than them i'd be happy to see Biffy Clyro, Mumford & Sons or Foals win  Worst winners would be Dizzee Rascal or Laura Marling :puke2:

Epic is one word I would not associate with XX. It's intimate.

The list is really underwhelming to me. You can't grumble at M&S, The xx, Villagers and (especially) Wild Beasts but the others are just so disappointing, I can't help but feel that we simply must have produced better albums over the past year than the list suggests.

I'm not so sure that we have. Looking at my favourite albums of this year so far and hardly any are from British acts. Foals (nominated), Gorillaz (Damon Albarn), The Courteeners (I love it but it's hardly innovative or inspsiring), Futureheads (but not as good as previous). Delphic perhaps?

Everything hyped seems to be from abroad

Really? Didn't know that

I don't think Damon ever enters now. I'm pretty sure it's why neither 'Demon Days' or 'The Good, The Bad & The Queen' weren't shortlisted either.

Oh dear, a very safe and cosy list this year. I'm not bothered at all who wins, I predict The XX.

Maybe so. I'm not blown away by the Delphic album but it does at least show some promise. I'd personally have Marina nominated but I know you're not as keen as I on that one.

Autechre and Four Tet have both produced great albums this year - although it's unlikely that the former would have been nominated. As someone else has already mentioned, the Groove Armada album is decent too - as is the Chemical Brothers' effort.

Outside of those, I must admit I'm struggling for suggestions.

Chemical Brothers is good, but it's not up to past glories, but then neither is Dizzee and arguably Biffy? I'm not fussed at all on Marina but I wouldn't have been surprised to see her there. Same with Plan B, but then I found his album very samey and boring aside from the singles so it's not really a susprise it's not there.

I think Bombay Bicycle Club are very good and their albums were released July 6th last year and July 12th this year. One must surely have been eligible? When was Big Pink released? Maps is a decent enough effort but not as good as his previous Mercury nominated album. Two Door Cinema Club is a good album. I love Codiene Velvet Club too, but I suspect I'm very much in a minority. BRMC is good, but again not as good as previous efforts.

Arctic Monkeys and Noah and the Whale were released in the timeframe too. I think Arctics is their best album but I know I'm in a minority, and 'The First Days of Spring' I think is excellent, but perhaps not consistant enough.

I was just thinking of The Big Pink as well, I added it to itunes last September so assume it was around then. I'd also have considered Editors and f*** Buttons too (definitely the latter!) - There's also Noah and the Whale and Blue Roses.

Not got The xx album yet, but I love the singles so might buy it soon. Aside from that, I don't own/haven't listened to any of these albums :( I do like Corrine Bailey Rae, Dizzee and M&S but not enough to buy the albums. So: The xx, Corrine, Dizzee or M&S to win. So surprised that Plan B and Marina weren't nommed :o :(

I just edited my post to mention Noah... and Arctic Monkeys too. But I don't think they were ever going to be nominated again realistically. f*** Buttons is a definite yes though.

VV Brown?!

Disagree here - I think every past Chemicals album has been patchy and flawed - this one, to my ears, is their finest ever work..... the Mercurys just don't seem to ever 'do' dance, though, otherwise, Groove Armada should definitely have been on the list - it's easily my album of 2010 so far.

I'm loving Flaws- but I think it was released outside the eligibility period..... not sure their first album's good enough for inclusion, though...

When was Big Pink released? Two Door Cinema Club is a good album.

Aren't Big Pink part or all American, though? And whilst the album's...ok... only Dominoes is REALLY great. I've only just bought Two Door Cinema Club - and it's a pretty fine album - great summery, happy stuff. Consistently good album, I reckon.

The xx and Wild Beasts are the only two on the list who would deserve the win. Oh, and Foals.
Looking at last year's list - La Roux???? Marina and Ellie Goulding are more worthy nominees than that load of rubbish (apart form the singles)
