If Spain were near certainties to win their group, Portugal might have made more effort.

Well I think it is fairly safe to say that Spain are going to win the group; and Portugal should have put more effort to avoid playing Spain in the Last 16.

Looks like it - unless Switzerland get a few in the second half.

Portugal FTW!

Come on, we've been playing great through the years and we still haven't won anything!!

I got the feeling it's gonna be a South American team to win the whole thing to be honest...

I've got my money on Argentina. They're really strong this time around. Mexico and Equador Uruguay* will lose to them. Chile and Paraguay won't get too far. And Brazil might get to the finals, but I'm not sure if they have what it takes.

On the European front we have the Netherlands and Germany as the strongest teams. Though Germany have to sort some things out, but they're usually good at correcting their own mistakes.

I do sense it's gonna be Netherlands vs Argentina in the final. But there are always surprises. I mean France and Italy came last of their groups... :S

*If, imagine, Uruguay went to the Final...

Argentina haven't really been tested yet. Their defence looks shaky which could be their undoing. Chile looked good at times tonight but really need to keep their discipline against Brazil or they could lose badly.

Well there were goals but it was still a boring match, at least Spain are thru. The time wasting at the end was pretty lame by Spain.

Now it gets interesting in the knockout stage, which could end up in extra time and penalties :drama:

Last 16 matches.

Uruguay vs South Korea

Mexico vs Argentina

England vs Germany

Ghana vs USA

Netherlands vs Slovakia

Japan vs Paraguay

Brazil vs Chile

Spain vs Portugal

The only ones I'd bet a lot on would be Argentina, Holland and Brazil winning. Others too hard to predict. Anyone agree?

by default a south american team will win

Since 1962 South American team won, the following competition European winner, following that South American so following the pattern its going to be an South American team, most likely Argentina or Brazil to win.

1962 Brazil (SA)

1966 England (E)

1970 Brazil (SA)

1974 Germany (E)

1978 Argentina (SA)

1982 Italy (E)

1986 Argentina (SA)

1990 Germany (E)

1994 Brazil (SA)

1998 France (E)

2002 Brazil (SA)

2006 Italy (E)

2010 Argentina/Brazil (SA)

 I'm starting to think Uruguay could be a real shock package tbh, I mean they have a fairly nice route to the semis..

I agree, yes.

Brazil vs. Netherlands in the quarter-finals should be interesting, and decisive... :yahoo:

That is why I haven't put them aside. They're the underdogs for me.

I was saying that earlier! Forlan and Suarez are not to be underestimated.

I agree, yes.

That would be hopefully a great battle.

I know someone on another forum who has a large bet on Holland lifting the trophy.

I would be thrilled TBH.

The Dutch play great football, and I'm rooting for any of the European teams to win... I'm just not that close with South America  And Brazil have won too much, they're always slightly overrated... -_-

The South American teams are on a high, all five of them have gone through.

In the other hand, only six European teams are in round 2 (England, Germany, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia and Spain), as opposed to 10 in 2006 and 9 in 2002. And they're all paired up in the matches, so there will only be 3 European teams in the quarter finals.

And one of these 4 teams will be an assured semifinalist: Uruguay, South Korea, USA or Ghana.

Exactly these statistics were the reason why I said right before the tournament

that Argentina will win! Brazil's time will be in 2014 "at home" but Argentina are on a high anyway!

They couldn't hardly get any better with the squad so it's their time...!

About Uruguay, South Korea, USA or Ghana getting into the semi-final...

well, it's Germany's and England's fault for that! At least one of them would have got this easy way

through these 4 teams to reach the semis... but they failed and now have the hardest way of all tbh...
