June 12, 201015 yr It's a bit of a worry when your goalie can't catch a ball that's going directly to him...
June 12, 201015 yr Gill Merrick (1954 England WC Goalkeeper who after retiring discovered he was short sided which explained why he conceded 4 goals from outside the box in that tournament) = Peter "The Cat" Bonetti (1970 World Cup QF versus West Germany) = Robert "Butter Fingers" Green. :manson: A pity as England are playing much better than I expected.
June 12, 201015 yr Well, Carragher and Gerrard both just had yellow cards handed them, in a 30-45 second span, or thereabouts....kinda feel bad for the English goalie Green.....and I'm a Yank..... EDIT: Just ended in a 1-1 draw.....USA squad, for their foibles, pulled off a respectable match against the English squad.... Edited June 12, 201015 yr by bigwiglaf
June 12, 201015 yr If only just only the howler was a distant memory sadly for Robert Green it be a nightmare, otherwise England played well in the first half, the second half just had no pop.
June 12, 201015 yr I thought America played reasonably well, keeping England at bay for large periods of the game. Think both will qualify.
June 12, 201015 yr A bit disappointed with the result, but ah well, I'd rather a draw than a loss. :)
June 12, 201015 yr I think we need to cut Robert Green some slack, he made a mistake - but all goalkeepers make mistakes, just happens it was now, at a very bad time. :( Like Theo said, a draw is better than a loss - I was pleased with our attacking play actually - I thought they might hold back, thankfully they didn't. Anyway, Robert needs to put this behind him for the next 2 matches, if he's playing, because those are 2 matches we must win.
June 12, 201015 yr 1-1 Optimist view. Hang on a minute didn't we draw our opening fixture against American opposition (Uruguay) in the 1966 World Cup. And in 1990 our next best tournament we only drew with Egypt. Pessimist view: No Rio Ferdinand = no pace in Central Defence = we are screwed; no David Beckham = 4/5 wingers who can go past players, but all of them can't cross to save their lives = we are screwed; the Premiership neglecting home talent in the goalkeeping department = Goalkeeping coach Ray Clemence is the best English goalkeeper in South Africa. Sensible view: We were the better side, but bar an "Adam Rickett", we had the best chances and deserved to win against our biggest rivals in our group. Conclusion: we will get through the group, but we don't have the quality to reach the Semi Finals.
June 12, 201015 yr What was that all about, Green?! That is just typical England- still, they were our hardest opposition so we could best the other two teams
June 12, 201015 yr First half was decent without being great, their equaliser came from nothing and was a tad harsh on the balance of play. Second half was drab and I wasn't too surprised to see the game fizzle out at 1-1. If anything, today just highlighted the problems we already knew we had. As Rich said, we should qualify but won't get any further than the Quarter Finals. Same old England.
June 12, 201015 yr Well you know Italy only drew 1-1 with the USA in their first game in 2006... One game isn't the be all and end all, but I concede we'll need to improve exponentially, if we're to advance into the latter stages. Edited June 12, 201015 yr by Ethan.
June 12, 201015 yr Carragher is far too slow for International football, lucky he wasn't sent off. He retires not long after Germany, plays no part in England for 3 years, and decides to come back for the biggest tournament in the world. Seems a little glory hunting to me, after seeing England breeze through the qualifiers. Heskey oh dear :( And for about the 98012th time in 8 years, Gerrard and Lampard cannot play in the middle together. Personally I would have taken Milner off, brought Carrick on, and slapped Gerrard on the left. Green, well yes it was a howler, but to not score more than 1 really is just as criminal. SWP and Lennon need to start keeping their heads up and looking. It was like watching 2 Nani's.
June 12, 201015 yr And just as you thought things couldn't get any worse for England fans: James Corden's World Cup Live. Dear lord
June 12, 201015 yr Lol at people who thought we would thrash them! Can't say much apart from I told y'all so! Wicky's ratings: Robert Green - 5 - Bad mistake but he recovered from it, my hat goes off to him. Glen Johnson - 8 - Some very good passes and crosses, as always though all the good things I can remember about him was what he did to ATTACK. Ashley Cole - 7 - England's most consistant player imo had another solid game. Ledley King - 7 - Thrilled to see him playing. Even though he only played the first half he got some very important tackles in. John Terry - 7 - I've said many times here that I'm not his biggest fan but that's the best I've seen him play for a long time. James Milner - 6 - Didn't get long before he was subbed, didn't make much of an impact. Steven Gerrard - 7 - Good goal and a good team performance. Frank Lampard - 4 - Didn't turn up Aaron Lennon - 6 - If Theo had his chance on 19 mins it could have been 2-0. Emile Heskey - 8- A few offsides too many, yeah and he didn't get Rooney the space he usually gets but he made his presence known and set up the goal. Just don't give him scoring opportunities and he'll be fine. Wayne Rooney - 6 - Hats off to America for neutralising him, didn't do anything until 70 mins. ---------------------------- Shaun Wright Phillips - 7 - Didn't do too badly. Got the crosses in, shame they didn't meet a white shirt. Jamie Carragher - 5 - Lack of pace scared the hell of out me. Peter Crouch - 6 - Had ten mins and they all thought he was taller then he actually is. Decent team performance, and we've won the group many times when we've drawn the opening game. Anyone who is pissed off that we didn't win doesn't know what they're talking about.
June 12, 201015 yr Very disappointed but that's what I expected. I knew after Gerrard's goal they didn't really care anymore which is typical with the England team. -_-
