Invalid argument imo. EVERYONE has the oportiunity to listen to EVERY song entered because ALL of the links are placed on the semi-final thread.

The point is that most people actually don't though...

Semi finals and new points system. My reason being ~50 songs is way too many to listen to at once, and if you break up your listening, it's easy to forget previous songs without multiple listens.

You vote based on just one listen?

This is a fictional contest that is supposed to be ENJOYABLE. Competition imo is the thing that makes it enjoyable, semi-finals bring competition as people are not sure as to wether they will qualify or not.

The big final made it boring and my argument for less pages in the final thread i think IS valid. YES. The world cup would have affected it. But not entirely...the game finished before 5PM! And the previous contest had it's results thread down on the ones with semis too! Do you really think a Music Forum's posts are really going to be down from 35-odd pages to 16 pages because of a world cup match that finished a couple of hours before?

The last contest's final thread was successful, anyone? Yes, it was divided into two nights but it doesn't really matter as the overall time of results announcementremained practically the same..

Are you saying that you listen to the songs once then?

Surely giving everyone an equal chance and not having the 'wrong semi' element makes a competition far more enjoyable?

Do people actually listen to all the songs at once? I don't believe people do, and if so, why? However you listen to songs you must surely take some notes, give them a green light or a rating/ranking? If you do, then why can't you get rid of all the ones you didn't really like after just one listen, giving you probably a maximum of about 30 songs (ooh, an old final!)? If you don't, then you're pretty daft to be honest.

To be fair, I whittled through it pretty quickly in just over 2 hours because I was busy yesterday evening, whereas most people take until about 11pm to finish it.

Obviously if I'd let it run on as long as most posts there'd have been more room for speculation and more people commenting/moaning that the results were taking too long to come :heehee:

The 16 page thing came as a bit of a shock, but:

a - Rich was VERY efficient with the results - there weren't about an extra five pages dedicated to 'omg where are the results this is taking so long' etc.

b - We had about a little bit fewer than the normal number of people we normally get viewing the thread - 20 or so in any one go, we normally get about 25-30 - but even so, why weren't most of these people posting? It's a problem we've had long before one big final, which is being scapegoated for inactivity - since about BJSC XXI people have just stopped discussing. It's an illusion that semis lead to loads more interest and activity - the only activity that really comes about are one or two people doing odds before the semis are over, a semi-final results prediction thread, and the results themselves.

c - Compare it with last month and it becomes clear it's not just about the 'one big final' - you've got a nice evening on, people are more likely to spend it outside. Last month's results thread got more pages than we normally get...

A lot of the people that do discuss things were also absent from the live thread yesterday which was just plain unlucky timing - TomKay, Bigzarafan, Silas etc...most of the 20-25 people that did turn up were generally the ones that keep quiet throughout the whole process (why I don't know). I even had to break out of hosts protocol and get involved in the discussion myself whilst presenting the scores it was so bare  Only really yourself, Pavel and 2 or 3 others were even making any sort of comment :drama:

I don't understand why people feel the need to listen to the songs all at once, which obviously makes everything a lot more stressful for them. You've got 11 days to vote, why you insist on listening to them in one sitting is beyond me.

Listening to 50 songs more than once is difficult, hence why I want semis back. I used to listen 2/3 times then...

I agree on something with Theo #fml

J/k. Much love :kink:

Surely you don't listen to songs you don't like more than once?

For this contest, I listened to the 48 songs in groups of 16 split over the first week. I noted in Excel which ones I didn't like and then didn't listen to them again. Why would I want to?

This. And if I listen to the songs over different days, I can guarantee I'll forget them - for me, I have to do them on the same day for it to be fair.

Listen to them in say, two groups of 25. While you're going, give each song a colour (green - love, yellow - like, red - dislike). Then listen to the songs in green again, during a third separate listening period, and order them by which you like the most. This way, you don't have to listen to all songs at once, and you remind yourself of your favourite songs.

Do you not make some form of notes or marks?

I listened to the first 16 songs four days before the last 16. I knew not to listen to Jamora's entry again as I noted that I thought it was rubbish. I knew to listen to Skall's again as I noted that I enjoyed it...

My technique is very similar. I also split my first listens into three blocks and gave the songs scores out of 10 (to 0.5 decimal points) recording them on excel with a brief description about the track; then on the second listen I only listened to the 26 songs that scored 6.0 or higher and rejigged my points; then on the third and final listen I shuffled by position rankings across the (I did not discover any 10.0 songs in this contest) 9.5; 9.0; 8.5; 8.0; 7.5 songs accordingly.

I listen to songs once to begin with (obviously), rate them on iTunes using the rating thing, remove all the ones with 2-1 stars, listen to those with 3 stars again, as some of them have potential to grow, keep those with that potential, remove the deadwood. Then the next day I listen to them all the way through/no interruptions and if I need another listen to them all (which I do 9 times out of 10) I will listen again, before deciding my final results.

Listening to 50 songs once = listening to one semi + all the final songs once. Does that mean you used to listen to the songs once when we had semis? GOTCHA'ALL.

Do you forget California Gurls one hour after you listen to it?
