I would think they are pretty slim, it also depends what artist is out in a particular week, Kylie last week did a fair bit, it be hard to hazard a figure to be honest, the physical market is a dying breed

Well, Kylie sold about 12k last week, but that's very exceptional now - 2k is usually what the best physical seller shifts.

Its still nice to have a physical single especially if you are fans of an artist like i buy Girls Alouds singles in physical format.

I would say that the number 1 is generally selling a few thousand copies (with exceptions for artists such as Peter Kay, and Kylie), with possibly as low as around 30-50 enough for Top 40 thesedays !

Here's some #1/#2 sales from the past 18 months..

25 Jan 09 Alexandra Burke "Hallelujah" (Sales Unknown) #2: Lady GaGa "Just Dance" 2 198

01 Feb 09 Lily Allen "The Fear" 4 263

08 Feb 09 Alexandra Burke "Hallelujah" 1 981 (lowest ever sales for a physical #1.. *)

15 Feb 09 Morrissey "I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris" 7 370 (5 396 CDS, 1 974 7")

22 Feb 09 U2 "Get On Your Boots" 4 736

06 Dec 09 Peter Kay's Animated All Star Band "The Official BBC Children In Need Medley) 102 940

23 May 10 Boyzone - Love Is A Hurricane 2 052

04 Jul 10 Kylie Minogue - All The Lovers 12 054 #2: Shout For England ft. Dizzee Rascal/James Corden "Shout" 2 816

*up to that date.

WHOAH!!

Now that is something with the low sales, especially Alexandra and Boyzone.

Basically if my HMV had a single from six months ago e.g. "The Climb" by Joe McEldrey, I bought it (not that I want to) and say 20-30 other people did, it would possibly be a physical top 40, even higher?!?!? Also, what if ten people bought a copy of a single from 2004 e.g. "1980" by Estelle from Amazon would they count?

Are those figures for Hallelujah correct.I remember many people on Buzzjack were claiming that the only reason Hallelujah sold over a million copies is because people were picking up cheap copies from Woolworths.Plus X-factor acts tend to have high physical sales.

Yes, she sold upwards of 400,000 physicals in the week the single was released - but that week (week 8 on release) she only sold 2K, the figures were taken from Music Week, so it's correct.

Yep it all counts ! The physical sales chart isn't published anymore because like you've hinted at above, it is pretty meaningless today.

Thank you for that :) It shows it's a dying format. It is nice to have a physical, but in the ones I have bought recently (Lady Gaga, Alexandra, Kate Nash, Bananarama, Kylie, Scissor Sisters and Alphabet), it's just the main song and a few remixes or even one song on it's own which I know Little Boots was infamous for! Thankfully "Once" had a B-Side.

I know people want the one main song to do good in the charts, but this with downloads has killed off any hope of B-Sides.

Actually, I think she sold around 9k - maybe close to 10k. Still, that's amazing, but that's because she has such a loyal fanbase of raging queens.

She, much like Madonna, is a dying breed though.

I ocassionally buy physicals, so despite the low sales for them, I think it's good that some acts keep producing them. :) This year I have bought Cheryl Cole '3 Words' and 'Parachute'; Lady GaGa 'Telephone', 'Bad Romance' and 'Alejandro'; Diana Vickers 'Once'; Katy Perry 'California Gurls'; and also promo CDs of Gabriella Cilmi 'On A Mission' and 'Hearts Don't Lie'; which is a record for me already!

Also, I'm planning on buying a promo CD of 'Commander' by Kelly Rowland of eBay, as it's my favourite 2010 song. ^_^

wow, physicals are all but dead

still, they do sell surprisingly well for special occasions-like charity, reality TV etc. but I am glad the chart counts downloads now

I love the random #1s that happen on the physical charts - Sophie Ellis Bextor got to #1 with 'Bittersweet'  Just goes to prove that the gays are the only ones buying CD singles :kink:

Nope definitely 12k physicals - from the MW report :

After slipping 4-6 last week, Kylie Minogue’s All The Lovers rebounds to number three, on a combination of TV promotion and belated physical release.

The 52,455 copies the track sold across the formats aren’t enough to earn Ms. Minogue her eighth number one single overall, but she does top the 7-inch chart (2,240 sales, compared to 861 for Lady GaGa’s Alejandro at number two) and the CD chart where 9,814 sales easily trump the 2,816 copies runner-up Shout For England’s Shout sold.

No need to bring your opinion of an artist into this thread <_<

I dont think it was meant as an attack on an artist. I assumed they were stating that acts that have big physicals like Madonna/Kylie were a dying breed.

"loyal fanbase of raging queens"

i tend to buy physical copies weeks after they are released if they are clearly going to be 'classic' tracks - eg the last one was sex on fire by kings of leon on 12 inch vinyle around june 2009 when i found it in hmv!!
