Almost don't want to open the debate but GA and Suga's almost neck and neck with Suga's slightly ahead due to higher album sales.

 

What does that work out at "per release"?

I wonder if GA could one day be the biggest seller of this list album wise. This is more than possible, it should be easy to oversell the Spice Girls with one studio album and a Greatest Hits. Then it's all about what the Sugababes will do next, but at the mo it's not a big threat.

they only released four albums and eleven singles!

 

their worldwide sales are 75m!

Spice Girls were legendary and, by far, the best girlgroup the UK has seen imo.

I though I disliked boybands but I just found out I hate girlbands even worse! Most of the list (well pretty much the whole list) I cannot stand!

I loved the Spice Girls when I was a kid and still like them now, but Girls Aloud are much better IMO.

But Sugababes per capta sales are still higher.

 

I think the fair way to compare sales is to do an average of their sales by album and singles. Otherwise, the act who releases more album will end up at number 1, even if all of them have really mediocre sales.

 

Shouldn't the Honeyz be at no. 15 in the Albums listing, 0.1 is more than 0.07, 0.06 & 0.04

This just shows that quantity of sales really does not represent quality of material.

thing is girls aloud and sugarbabes will probably go above the spice girls but in terms on sales per unit spice girls will always be the top because they havent released as many albums as they other groups would have by that point

Spice Girls were just marketed to perfection whether you loved then or loathed them. Personally, I still think '2 Become 1' is pop music at its best. Whilst 'Wannabe' has always been considered throwaway pop it's also a guilty pleasure.

 

Were they overrated? By the time of the second album (which was crap imo - that's before we even get to the disaster that was album #3) I'd definitely say yes. They peaked in their first six months (but what a six months :D ).

Nope. Girls Aloud has sold an average of 0.62m per album (6 total), while Sugababes only 0.52m (8 total).

GA can get higher than the Spice Girls, when they get back together, they still have the 3 album deal, then they can do it :D

B*Witched did well in the singles sales for a short time i think. GA can catch up to the SG if they promote their lead single sof their albums on X Factor, which should be easy condsering Cheryl is a judge. Singles wise i don't think GA can reach the top due to a over 3 million gap.

actually they have had 3 studio albums, 1 GH and a remix album. but yes...the big sellers were the first 2 studio albums for sure :)

There's no denying that Spice Girls were a worldwide phenomenon but going from 10x platinum, 5x platinum to 1x platinum in four years is laughable. The worldwide sales are equally laughable. That happens to novelty acts when the novelty wears off. Even if Geri hadn't left the group they still would have never matched the sales of their first two albums.

 

I much prefer what Girls Aloud have done. First album is the lowest selling and their latest album is the best selling (apart from greatest hits.) I cba googling but probably all the other groups in that list had big debuts and the sales went downhill from there.

 

In addition Girls Aloud still have all the original members. Can that be said about any of the other groups in that list?

 

Regardless of who has sold the most Girls Aloud are the "best" UK girl group IMO. I'm sure they will overtake Spice Girls and SugaBabes in the album sales chart. Knowing how bad the album sales are these days and how people don't like new girl groups GA will stay on the top of that list for a very long time (unless Spice Girls get killed in a plane crash)
