01. Lady Gaga is indeed setting trends because ever since she emerged there have been a ton of singers dressing provocatively/wackily in an attempt to mimic her outrageous style. It's even evident in established popstars who have started dressing all CRAZY because they/their marketing people think that's what made Gaga a success, when actually it's just a small part of her success along with the enigma and the huge tunes. But I digress.

 

02. 'Pointless lyrics to generic pop tracks'? Have you heard Revolver? MY SEX IS A KILLER MY LAV'S A REVOLVA - so deep! So meaningful! Such a gloriously avant-garde backing track! Fair enough though, everybody's allowed one off moment. Oh, but- hang on- what's that I hear? EVERYBODY WANTS TO PARTY WITH YOUUUU dumdumdumsynthsynthsynth.

 

03. Madonna has been active within the past year - if she was setting trends instead of following them then we would indeed be seeing the effects of it now. But she isn't.

If thats aimed at me can I just stress that I have in no way slammed any act in my responces. I infact rated GaGa and Britney very high in my list. Nothing wrong with a good healthy debate.

Madonna has over the course of 25 years been at the forefront of modern contemporary pop music - Agree there have been blips (people were willing to write her off just before Ray Of Light came out) but it would be foolish to do it again so easily. She came back strongly from the lukewarm American Life with one of her strongest albums in Confessions...

 

Lady Gaga is right now what Madonna was in 1984 - A breath of fresh air and probably the best, most interesting and artistically minded pop star out there RIGHT NOW. She has the potential to be a truly brilliant artist but she is not the finished package yet. She has released some great singles over the last 2 years and has a strength of individualism that will guarantee a horde of copyists but only when she can combine that with longevity will she truly be a legend.

 

You can only very rarely be a great artist with only one decent/popular album in you - if you could we would now be lauding the likes of The Zombies, ABC, Terence Trent D'Arby and The Darkness as the greatest artists/bands of all time and all of those released succesful critically acclaimed albums before it all went wrong. Quite simply it is just too early to tell exactly where Gaga stands right now.

 

After all this time next year Diana Vickers could be the most popular and influential artist going... If you believe that's impossible just think back to the first Robbie Williams album

I love Britney. One of my fav acts of all time but lets get real here. She isnt a great singer and she barely dances now. Unless you call strutting around and throwing your hair about a dance lol. I went to her last tour and loved it, not for her performances or lack of. Just becuase it was a fun show and I love her songs.

 

And who cares if Sheryl Crow cant dance lol. She has talent in songwriting, vocals and instruments. Anyone can look pretty, have great production and throw there hair around miming songs lol
