But most people don't exactly engage in that as it is - it really only tends to be you, Addy, Rich and Phil, with a couple of others occasionally dipping in. Pre-contest banter is hardly the key thing with countries

I'd see the lack of finding out what others think to be quite a refreshing twist actually. It would certainly encourage more creative entries knowing you're not going to be depending on what a few others think anyway! Certainly I'd say my best entries were the ones I'd have sent no matter what anyone thought of them - La Roux, Camille, Eric Saade, The Sound of Arrows, Erik Hassle etc. My more disappointing ones were the ones where I felt quite unsure with what I would go with and went with something based on how popular I thought it would be - Girlicious, Suzie McNeil, etc.

I'm far proud of the entries i entered after i realised i really didn't care about a good finishing position and that i'd rather introduce someone to something amazing they wouldn't have heard otherwise rather than next weeks/months big hit. For me, Alone, Mitt Liv Ar Mitt, Nevio/Cilmi, Don't Stop Looking etc were better entries than Push The Button, Got No Place To Go etc although i am extremely proud of Colour Me Dirty and rather pleased with I Don't Know.

I'm sort of 50/50 on the anonymity front, the 'unknown pleasures' format did work well - and it could here too, but I think people like to have people evaluate their entries before they decide on them - but maybe that's one of the problems with the current format? As the perceived desire to suceed narrows the musical diversity?

Who knows :o

It be funny if 3 countries picked the same artist and same track, if the comp went anonymous, I guess it will be first come first serve, tough $h!t you have to pick another track.

I actually like the annoymous format as it makes it more fun trying to guess which country is sending which, it keeps everybody guessing. The only problem with that, if you chart the track in your personal chart, "ooh look that could be FSR Fontvia's entry" as an example.

FSR Fontvia? Hang your head in shame -_-

:kink:

There's another way to do that, give fake titles, Rich originally charted his XXVI winner as Sheila - Dancing Psycho, but in the end I never sent either Darius Gaiden - Can't Eat Can't Sleep (Taito Tikaro - Addicted) or Kris K - Show Me What Ya Got (Crystal Kay - Flash)

Yeah exactly  I had so many people asking me where they could hear the song too because they Googled it and couldn't find it. Was it really any wonder when I gave it a fake name? Same with Lena/Ellie - Not Following, people saying they couldn't find that on a search engine - yeah, because I made the 'duet' myself  I didn't realise people took so much of an interest in the 'unknown' songs in my chart to be honest :heehee:

Definitely agree with this. 90% of my entries were selected by me internally with no opinions from other people whatsoever and I didn't do too badly  I'd rather send something and have the excitement of not knowing who will and won't like it, rather than ask for opinions, which are obviously always going to be mixed and may put you off sending a great pop winner because only indie posters replied in your thread. I have traditionally always PM'd Phil (and often Tom) my choices for his opinions beforehand and vice versa. Why do you think we swap points so much, I've actually ditched a fair few songs if he's panned them and I wasn't sure about them anyway!

WTF is going with Buzzjack Contest. I remember when participating was fun. These days there are too many rules and too many moaners that make the contest less enjoyable. Le sigh.

And allow anonymous. I don't get what it would achieve at all?

Buzzjack is boring without BJSC

Sorry, I wasn't expecting it to be on page 3 :P

I think it's nearly time to start disecting this contest, I think on the whole it's been quite succesful, but the forum has been REALLY quiet. I guess the proof of the pudding is in the voting though...

I agree. To be honest even if the voting and results all go smoothly and the right song wins etc, the actual result is really a relatively small part of the contest.

Having been away for 9 months it makes the difference even more noticeable.

We all may disagree on the reason, but the BJ(U)SC jumped the shark when Silly Boy won.

Maybe so, but the whole of BJ was obsessed with Silly Boy for several weeks, whatever else had been entered, it would have won. I don't think it's really the contest's fault... Anyway, if this experiment hasn't/doesn't work, how do we get it back on track?

I think Silly Boy is when people started getting really annoyed with the BJ(U)SC, but I think the moment when people just stopped bothering with it was (no offence to Kath) during the six hour results of XX. After then people pretty much stopped caring. People got a bit excited again after the really unpredictable results in XXIV when Delphic and Tinashe came top two, but then all gains from that were pretty much thrown away when Good Times won the next contest.

I don't think we can judge the experiment solely on the basis of this contest. People seem pleased for it to continue, but I think we need to stop kidding ourselves that the contest could ever reach the heights of popularity that it had in 2008/2009 again. Put simply, the contest was a lot more novel then, most of the participants weren't at university at the time (whereas the majority are these days, I think) - something which has affected the website overall, I'd say. We also don't have the monopoly to being one of the website's USPs anymore - too many people lost interest. I think given that we don't really have the level of participation we used to, the new format makes a lot more sense - it's far more casual, focuses a lot more on the music than any hype really - a lot like Unknown Pleasures. Even over there they have days without any posts whatsoever, but they tend to get quite a lot of interest and activity during the results show. One thing I would've changed about this contest would've been the timing of the unveiling of who sent what - I'd have done it during the results as with Unknown Pleasures, as that tends to generate activity on top of the activity you already get with the results from people posting their surprise etc.

(For people determined to find cracks where there are none, that was NOT a criticism of Silas, merely a statement of how I would've done it differently had I ran the contest.)

I'll admit, something in BJSC died a little for me in the early twenties of BJSC. I still enjoy the contest, but probably not to the same extent.

I would have loved to see something a little like......and people might not agree with this but...

Have it so the fake names stay until we have the final scoreboard.....and then go from last place to first place revealing which country sent what. It might mean you wouldn't be able to cheer on your song but I would mean it would be tense right to the end wondering which of the last two countries left to be revealed sent the winner.
