Maybe, but last year had an awful lot aswell! I wonder if this trend will last forever, or if we'll go back to having lots of 4-weekers and 5-weekers in a few years.

I love having a lot of one-weekers. It makes the chart look fresh and not samey. Plus, if it's rare for a song to spend more than 2 weeks at number one then it will be like a huge achievement. Whereas if that regularly occured then it would be very boring and stale.

No trend lasts forever, we all thought the same in 2000 but gradually the 3 and 4 weekers came back...the market's changing again as manufactured pop/held back releases/massive first week sales/well planned release dates to ensure a #1, return and while we all adapt to it the #1's are changing ridiculously quickly. 2008 was something else though in terms of slowness, I really hope it doesn't go like that again. 10 songs spent 3 weeks or more at #1 (compared to only two this year so far) and some of them hardly deserved so long at the top, they'd have been one week wonders this year. 5 weeks for Basshunter for example? And tuning in to the chart each week to hear that there were two new entries and everything else shuffled down a place each on its 24th week inside the top 40 was painful :drama:

Yeah, looking at this, I think I'm glad we've got lots of number-ones at the moment. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_numbe..._the_2000s_(UK)

2007 and 2008 look so boring! Seriously, Umbrella for 10 weeks! It was only a few years ago, but I just can't imagine that happening now. I'd be so frustrated by it. Seriously, imagine Shout was STILL number-one!. I remember people joking back then that the floods in the UK were Rihanna's fault.

Also, this is slightly off-topic, but I noticed that all 7 of Eminem's #1s last decade only lasted for one week.

in 2000, all were one week except Gabrielle- Rise, All Saints- Pure Shores, Fragma- Tocas Miracle, Sonique- It Feels So Good, Modjo- Lady, Westlife and Mariah - Against All Odds and Bob The Builder- Can We Fix It, so the other 36 number 1s were just one week

so far this year we've had 22 number 1s- the ones that have spent more than a week are Replay, Fireflies, Everybody Hurts, Pass Out, Telephone, This Aint a Love Song, Good Times, Shout and California Gurls- so far, 12 songs have just spent a week there, at this point in 2000, around 24 songs had- that may seem a long way off, but these one-week wonders just keep coming now- I think we could catch up to 2000 by the end of the year tbh

I personally like it like this- it is less boring and keeps you guessing who the number 1 is each week- 2007 was just SO boring- remember all those weeks that Umbrella was number 1, plus 7 weeks for Bleeding Love!

It might be boring, but on the other hand these fast-paced number one changes and front-loaded singles were partly the reason why Westlife managed to get 14(!) #1 singles. Personally I can see JLS getting at least half of Westlife's total quite easily within the next couple of years. And anybody who "likes the chart like this" has no right to complain about that if it happens, by the way. :P

its sad how much i wish Eminem could snatch the no1? anyone know if Emminanna is catching up yet?
is it to late for eminem to take the lead??
JLS out of the top 40  so many No.1's falling so rapidly now. Only 14 ex-No.1s in the iTunes top 100, 6 of them in the top 40! The chart has changed a lot now
In a way I want Alex to go low top 10 at most with SWY so her label realise that her material must be stronger. It's unfair on the fans.

Really? You've bummed the song probably a bit more than me over the last 2 months, so I'm surprised you're saying her material must be stronger.

Don't listen to the internet criticism, this song is strong, catchy, instant and destined for either the #1 or #2 spot. I'll be really surprised if it doesn't get to either of those positions given (a) the long lead-in time which will compress sales into the first week; (B) the instant, catchiness of the song; and © the fact she has a decent fanbase, as witnessed by each of her songs so far all going top 10 (and third single from album going to #4 (?)).

The video does look low budget though and probably won't help as much as it could. Why the feck is she not on the beach, with bongos and Jamaican men partying around her? That's the thing that surprised me most about the video - I thought it was a shoe-in to follow that set-up. Maybe with it being released late summer / early autumn its not appropriate though, but they should have had it out early summer a la California Gurls with the aforementioned video accompanying it.

One mega plus point about the video is that, for the first time ever, Alexandra looks very do-able. I didn't think she could ever look so hot. She needs to keep that hairstyle and stay away from the drag-queen-esque bob that did her no favours at all.

At first, I loved it. It was like a cross between Rude Boy and Alejandro imo. But in hindsight, it's very weak melodically and lyrically. You've probably guessed already, with me being a huge Leona fan, that I love the lyrics and think they're the most important ingredient.

The song is not up to the standard of ANL, BH and even BB. They all had their unique appeal, SWY doesn't in my eyes except the carribean vibe.

It probably will go to #1 or #2 but that doesn't mean it's a great song. Look at the #1s so far this year. I'd rather listen to something great than listen to something that is catchy, instant and commercial but lacking in quality.

I agree with your last point though. She looks hot, sexy and fierce! That hairstyle has to stay for at least another era. I also agree that the bob made her face look pointy (which it isn't really when you look at her now/in XF days) and made her look quite unattractive.

This rapid turnover will keep happening unless/until something with a wider appeal than just urban fans, turns up.

Yes - RD has been too far ahead on iT for too long.

From all the (to me inexplicable) attention that Taio Cruz's 'Dynamite' has been getting, next week it'll surely end Em/Ri's chances once & for all.

FFS, another flop

Not even in Top 1000

I don't think we can end Em/Ri's chances until it drops out of the Top 5, during the week, it has rapidly took over and went past Flo Rida, and is on the edge of Roll Deep.

If LTWYL can overtake tonight, they could build themselves a 20-25% lead over GT. Though they may not get #1 this or next week, if they can hang on to being roughly 15-25% behind Taio, then they could overtake him the week after...

Anyway, I would rather Em/Ri didn't get to #1, it would great to see the YTD #1 peaking at #2.

Why was this released midweek? Record companies really bring it on themselves :(

Just (yes, I'm slow) figured out you love Hurts. Hopefully they'll be top 25 here, they are #3 in Germany :o
