There have been lots of unusual songs that have made the upper regions of the chart, but some just defy all logic.

Would you believe that this song made number 2, only Rod Stewart's Sailing kept if from the top spot in 1975. I love the look on some of the Top of the Pops audience, thinking WTF! How can Noel Edmonds introduce this without laughing. I know the mid seventies was bad for music, but really.

What other songs got high in the chart that just seemed out of place?

Ah, I remember it well. I actually liked the song at the time

Aren't those 70s haircuts wonderful?

And then there's a Kenyan singing about his love for England

One of the discussion points on Steve LaMacq's 6Music show today was an attempt to identify the worst year for music. 1975 was a popular choice when the likes of this made number one.

This is actually a hymn. I'd heard it before in Catholic masses and only later put two and two together.

In its defence ... the melody is actually bloody beautiful.

Edit: I'm not sure which came first now ... the hymn or the song! It's so old. Anyway ... I like the music.

Crazy Frog... this is a retro forum.

1992 is often cited as a poor year for music although it's ironically the year I started listening to the charts, watching TOTP etc... looking back on reflection, I can understand why...

74-75 (not The Connells' song, which is good) wasn't great for hits overall. Tail end of glam and the Rollers. Not great.

As for out-of-place stuff (but in a totally brilliant way) how about Rumer's Slow? Still top 40 this week, doesn't sound like it was recorded this side of thirty years ago, yet it's completely wonderful.

Another reason to hate this was it knocked off Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel of the top spot. <_<

Just when you think 1975 couldn't get any worse, this got to number one, seriously it did.

In terms of out of place, but also fantastic, what about Ghosts by Japan? Nothing sounded like that in 1982. In fact, nothing sounded like that ever. I bought a BBC Radiophonic Workshop LP the other day that has a track that sounds like the intro of it, but really that's the limit.

1992 was a great year for music. It just wasn't reflected in the charts
