September 15, 201014 yr He's only in it for Crazy Chris reasons though, getting his daughter into a school  I wouldn't be so dismissive, it's quite common for people to do that nowadays...
September 15, 201014 yr I wouldn't be so dismissive, it's quite common for people to do that nowadays... Yeah, my dad and step-mum have started attending synagogue to get my sisters into a Jewish school, which is by far the best school in their area of inner-city Birmingham (well, even though it's officially a Jewish school, there's actually bizarrely more Muslims who attend than Jews  ), even though my step-mum has no Jewish links whatsoever and my dad hasn't been practicing since he was a kid and who's pork consumption is about 10 times the national average.
September 15, 201014 yr All this stuff is further example of why religion should have no place in schools, there should not be schools for jews or catholics or CoE any more than there should be white only or black only schools, it is ridiculous that people have to fake liking religion just to get into a school The government should ban all religious schools of all persuasions

However, I would like to see an end to state-funding for religious schools. If religions want to indoctrinate children at school, let them - or the parents - pay for it.

I don't mean close the schools themselves just ban selection on the basis of religion and make them available to everyone subject to the regular criteria (location etc) Nothing against the schools just that religious based selection is evil, there would be an outcry and arrests if someone tried to start a school based on colour and rightly so so it is unfair that religion has these powers
September 15, 201014 yr Never had you down as a churchgoer :o You should have just said it lol I haven't been to a mass for over 3 years....since my daughter was accepted in to a Catholic secondary school. :o They do have to accept 3% of girls who are NON-CATHOLIC though, to still receive their part-State funding. September 16, 201014 yr agreed, why should certain kids be advantaged just because of their religion, it's absurd. its almost like if black and whites were segregated and whites got to go to better schools. I find this quite funny. Normally atheists tend to boast than they are more intelligent than the religious, and now you're complaining that they're too smart?

My son's school has an acceptance rate of 10% for non-Catholics. I don't see anything wrong with faith schools. It is only recently that they've been brought into question due to religious fanaticism - from all faiths! I do think though that if you've started going to church just to get your kid into school ... then you should be forced to undergo the one hour of boredom on a Sunday until your child has left school. I don't mind paying for my child to go to a Catholic school .... as long as ... I am exempt from certain taxes on the basis that the head of state of this country (I don't mean the queen by the way ... just the rule) is not allowed to marry a Catholic. It isn't actually due to the religious teachings that I want my son to attend the school he goes to ... it is just a fact that his school is consistently in the top 10 for results for the whole of Greater Manchester. It doesn't have a rapid turnover of teachers like most state schools today have. The teachers in his school on average have 20 years at that school each. Incidentally ... a lot of the teachers are non-catholic ... so it isn't just the parents of the kids that would prefer to teach in a faith school. By the way ... I am totally disgusted by the Catholic Church and this pope for the covering up of the crimes that have gone on for years. Kath Edited September 16, 201014 yr by Kathyp
September 16, 201014 yr I find this quite funny. Normally atheists tend to boast than they are more intelligent than the religious, and now you're complaining that they're too smart? well i didnt say they were more smart, in fact they are pretty dumb for believing God is real, I'm just saying I think it's a problem when people are faking being catholic just to get their children into a better school in their area, i dont think good schools should be limited by religion I never even mentioned intelligence.
September 16, 201014 yr My son's school has an acceptance rate of 10% for non-Catholics. Kath Suppose I started a school tomorrow where 90% of pupils had to be white and I had a token 10% black but the school was aimed at local whites how long do you think it would be before the police were carting me off to jail ? Minutes I would say and rightly so Why should a school be allowed to discriminate on grounds of religion when they are not allowed to on the basis of skin colour ?
September 16, 201014 yr By the way ... I am totally disgusted by the Catholic Church and this pope for the covering up of the crimes that have gone on for years. Kath The Sky News reporter travelling in on The Pope's plane said he told them he was "shocked and saddened" by the abuse allegations so the man obviously does care.
September 16, 201014 yr The Sky News reporter travelling in on The Pope's plane said he told them he was "shocked and saddened" by the abuse allegations so the man obviously does care. PR stunt and nothing more As the vatican's chief enforcer before he became pope he was in charge of covering up abuse and on top of that he threatened, blackmailed, bribed victims of abuse so that priests could stay in the job and carry on abusing. The pope saying he is shocked and saddened by abuse when he was in charge of intimidating and paying off victims of abuse makes him even more vile

September 16, 201014 yr Well from what I've seen of him so far he looks like a very nice man. I hope he enjoys his visit to the UK. I hope he gets arrested or even better shot dead so let's just agree to disagree on this one !
September 16, 201014 yr "The total cost of the Pope's stay to the taxpayer will be between £10m and £12m, with the bill for policing estimated at an additional £1.5m." outrageous, the taxpayers of Rome dont pay for our visits.

Disgusting, the catholic church is one of the richest organisations in the world, helped in part to the theft of jewish gold, it should be paying the bill for this visit not the taxpayer
September 16, 201014 yr I hope he gets arrested or even better shot dead so let's just agree to disagree on this one ! Interestingly Sky News said his Vatican bodyguards aren't happy as they're not allowed to carry loaded guns in this country. Only his Special Branch bodyguards will be armed. I'm sure the Secret Service are armed when the US President visits. No-one stops them carrying guns. Edited September 16, 201014 yr by Common Sense
