September 18, 201014 yr Liverpool does have a chip on it's shoulder though and a deeply ingrained victim culture, Boris Johnson was spot on, the city tends to wallow in self pity and feels it is hard done by by and large so it is natural that Liverpool would not exactly be grateful to Maggie. And Manchester?
September 18, 201014 yr And Manchester? Manchester has always been hardcore Labour territory, all the rich people and successful live in Cheshire, lots of Cheshire is Conservative
September 18, 201014 yr Manchester has always been hardcore Labour territory, all the rich people and successful live in Cheshire, lots of Cheshire is Conservative I repeat. The Tories held a seat in Manchester as recently as 1983. They lost it in 1987 and have never come close to winning anything back. Why after 13 years of Labour government did they hold just one seat out of 96 on Manchester City Council if the previous Tory government had been so good for Manchester? Sorry to use facts in my argument as I know how much you hate them.

September 18, 201014 yr I am not talking about Harlow, Theydon Bois and Manningtree I am talking about Basildon, Romford, Ilford, Dagenham etc, the Essex end of E London, Basildon was hardcore Maggie territory they loved her thereBasildon might be poor by the standards of south/south-east England, but it would be very wealthy if you transplanted it into urban northern England. Liverpool does have a chip on it's shoulder though and a deeply ingrained victim culture, Boris Johnson was spot on, the city tends to wallow in self pity and feels it is hard done by by and large so it is natural that Liverpool would not exactly be grateful to Maggie. Wow. There's scraping the barrell, and then about 10 leagues below that, there's backing up your argument by quoting Boris Johnson. I won't even bother asking you why you're so convinced that Scousers wallow in self-pity, as I doubt you've ever met many or been within 100 miles of it - no doubt you're just going to cite one or two Liverpool supporters who are still bitter about Hillsborough (God forbid they should be upset about being told they were to blame for people dying by the national press when actually it was the fault of the authorities). No idea There could be all sorts of reasons Well, take it from me, there's only one reason: Thatcher. As Suedehead said, the Tories had some success here prior to Thatcher; afterwards, they haven't had a look-in. It's much the same in most of the rest of northern England, north Wales and Scotland. All those areas have a deeply-ingrained hatred of the Conservatives because of how Thatcher treated us, and it's why, in spite of Cameron's attempts to bring in Cuddly Conservatism (which now turned out to be all talk), the party is now completely unelectable. Thatcher might have brought you short-term success, but you're still suffering from her toxic legacy.

Hillsborough was a tragic event but it is time that Liverpool moved on as a city (bar of course the families and close friends of the dead), Glasgow, Bradford have had similar tragedies, London lost over 50 lives in 7/7 but those cities respect the dead but move on and it is time Liverpool did, that aside though the most negative inward looking people I have ever met have been from Liverpool, I have met Liverpool residents before and each had the same negative chip on the shoulder persona tbh
September 18, 201014 yr In the words of Frankie Boyle - when she dies, instead of a state funeral, give everyone in Scotland a shovel and they'll dig a hole so deep we can hand her over to Satan personally. And that hole would be finished before the bitches body is cold. She did a lot for areas like Cardiff, for areas like Newcastle, Liverpool would not be the "capital of culture" without Maggie having done the groundwork, Leeds is full of prosperous areas now, she did a lot for regenerating cities that were in decline. I can't comment on Scotland but certainly northern cities were transformed by her urban redevelopment and enterprise zone programs Northern England and Scotland go absolutely screwed by Thatcher. EU money and the IT boom have been the key forces redeveloping the northern HALF of the British Isles. Scotland is littered with towns that Thatcher ruined for good. They'd be as well taking a bulldozer to 98% of Gordon Browns constituency. She destroyed the coal mining. There have been 51 coal mines in Fife, about 70% of which closed during that slags range. The only places that will ever elect a Tory MP in Scotland are the rural areas where the land is still owned by Earls etc and there has never been any secondary industry. Drive through Paisley, East Kilbride, Cumbernauld, Glasgow, The M8 Corridor, Skirts of Edinburgh, Central Fife and Dundee and try to tell me she was a good leader. She did so much damage these area's are still no where near the road to recovery. She treated Northern England like she treated Scotland, as if it was something she trod in.

Continuing with the electoral history, in October 1974 the Tories won two seats in Glasgow. They lost one of them in 1979 (the year the evil woman came to power) and lost the other in a by-election in 1982. They are now fourth in every seat gaining as little as 5 or 6% in some seats.
September 18, 201014 yr @Silas/Suedehead2 - The Scots have a particular dislike of her though because they felt she "stole" the North Sea oil revenues Whether that is true or not I am not qualified or sober enough to comment but certainly every sweaty I speak to almost without fail bring up the oil revenues thing

My region was Tory till the '87 election when 2000 more people turned out to ditch the Tories for good. Dundee, Cumbernauld, Fife and Paisley have also never elected a tory.

The oil is in our sovereign waters and if we go indie like Salmond wants us too, that oil is all ours. It's possibly the only thing that would stop us filling for bankruptcy within 30days.

How is it racist  I even use the term with my Scots friends, my Facebook has several references to that term and I have more than 1 Scots friend on Facebook, calling someone from Scotland a "sweaty" is anything but racist, its like saying calling someone from Australia an Aussie is a racist term
September 18, 201014 yr I have never heard the term 'Sweaty' before and it is rather derogatory. You call someone that up here and your body would have more holes than a colander.

September 18, 201014 yr Sweaty = Sweaty Sock= Jock It is the term used down here as a nickname for Scots people Doesn't mean it isn't racist. Just because the Australians refer to Aboriginals as the plural of the bellow brand name doesn't mean they are right. It's insanely racist regardless of how popular it's usage is as a nickname http://www.creativespirits.info/aboriginalculture/people/images/racism-Coon-cheese.jpg [[it is actually the tastiest Cheese in Aus lol]]
September 18, 201014 yr Sweaty = Sweaty Sock= Jock It is the term used down here as a nickname for Scots people Can't say I've ever come across it. I'd regard Jock as affectionate and jocular (no pun intended) and would regard Aussie in the same way. However, "sweaty" is a rather derogatory term to use.

Would have loved a coloured version  The PC lobby can screw themselves, it's worth it.
