FYI, unskilled workers from outside the EU aren't actually allowed to immigrate here anymore (unless they're seeking asylum).

 

EU immigration is the big problem, as the EU expands and more and more economically backward nations being allowed to join along with Turkey it is open season for Europeans to come settle here

If that's the price to pay for less wealthy countries developing into mature democracies, I think it's a price worth paying but maybe you would prefer it if the likes of Spain, Greece and Portugal reverted to the days of right wing dictatorships (as they all were in my lifetime) and all the former countries of the USSR and other members of the Warsaw Pact reverted to communism.

But it's membership of the EU that provides a back-up for those countries. Why else do you think the attempted coup in Spain happened while they were moving towards membership? The military knew that it was their last chance to seize power.

You obviously either didn't read or chose to ignore my earlier post. If we wish to trade with the EU (and we'd be well and truly stuffed if we didn't) we have to abide by their rules. As long as we're a member we have some say in what those rules are. If we leave, we have no say at all.

They need us more than we need them, us and Germany and France are the only countries in Europe that are economic powerhouses, the rest are either economically backward, crippled by debt thanks to the Euro and not allowed to change their interest rates because of a treaty or too small to be of any economic significance.

 

If we pulled out of the EU it would make absolutely no difference to our trading within Europe while at the same time we would not be burdened with bailing out lame duck countries and not bound to take in all their economic migrants

I have no issue with doctors, nurses etc coming over from other EU countries, the ones I have objection to are the unemployed, the pikeys, the squeegee merchants, the car washers, the Eastern European beggars that harrass people on underground trains, the ones that send all their money home instead of spending it here etc

And why shouldn't they send money home to their families, kids, etc, would you rather they bring them over and then have to get benefits from the state...? At least it proves they actually care and actually have a sense of morals instead of just being completely irresponsible and pishing up against the wall, obviously they MUST be spending something here, how would they eat otherwise...? And how is it essentially any different to what British workers did in industries like construction in the 80s when they were thrown on the scrapheap by Maggie...? Remember the series Auf Wiedersehen Pet...? It was actually based on reality you know... Brit workers lived relatively cheaply in accomodation provided by their employers and sent money home to their families, which is surely a GOOD thing...

Here's the thing - large family units (yes, amongst the working classes) were a feature of this country for centuries, historically speaking, only up until relatively recently... Now, of course that had much to do with lack of birth control, the higher infant mortality rate, etc, but still, the whole concept of the "nuclear family" of mum, dad and the archetypal "two point four" kids is really only a recent phenomenon in terms of history... So, really in this sophisticated democracy that we are supposed to have in the 21st century, our society should really be able to cope with large family units far easier than in the past, surely.... It's not as if these people are "scroungers", they're not life-long dolies, they work hard, they're not " layabout chavs" they're the Working Poor, paying into the system, the system in turn is failing them by not even being able to provide adequate social housing, and frankly I find that a fukkin' disgrace tbh..... <_<
