Interesting ideas of "rock" artists in this thread, and even the article...
Lol pop "revolution"

By it's very definition, pop music has always been around. But with very FEW exceptions, it is a singles chart entity and extremely disposable - there are very few pop acts who can transcend decades and trends like all the greatest rock and metal acts. They'll also never make the same impact on the album charts, or on the live circuit.

Tell that to Madonna, & Kylie...

The fact you've only got 2 examples backs up *his* point rather than yours.

I've never understood this argument - someone says [something] is very rare, then someone says they're wrong by naming one or two examples.

Rock'll come back. Probably.

Ten years ago there was very little rock in the charts as far as I recall. The only big hits I can recall that are vaguely 'rock' (which I guess encompasses anything guitary that isn't straight-up pop) are 'Beautiful Day', 'Take A Look Around' and 'Smooth'. I don't know but I'd imagine that those percentages in the MW article would have been similar for 2000, only with dance occupying a good 20-30% and rock probably even lower - 10-15%?

Between Britpop (and most of that would be lumped into rock/indie, surely) and late 03-early 04 (discounting nu-metal, and the Strokes, White Stripes and KoL's first big hit albums), rock was nowhere excepting the occasional big hit. Same from late 07 (or early 08) to now.

Of course, the singles markets that got Iron Maiden a number 1, U2 and Oasis multiple number 1s, are dead thanks to downloads. Then again, chart runs for 'She Sells Sanctuary' or 'This Charming Man' (ok indie not rock there) wouldn't be out of place now.

Also, last Autumn Paramore's album was #1...

hmm... isn't this a discussion on rock music acts?

WTF else are Paramore, if *not* rock?

They could be described as 'pop punk' which isn't considered rock by the majority of rock fans

It's a subgenre of rock, it's derived from punk rock. It's just snooty people who hate Paramore arguing otherwise, no matter how much people hate Green Day there's not many people calling them a pop group instead of a rock band when they've been pop-punk for the majority of their career.

Well they get played on Sky Ch.355 'MTV Rocks'...

This is my point.

Same applies to All Time Low and You Me At Six.

The Manics could go top 10 this week- it will be very nice to see a rock song in the top 10 again, the last time that happened I think was Muse last year with Uprising

Crossfire could be very loosely called rock couldn't it?

Also Killing In The Name got to #1 since Uprising

oh yes- forgot about that

whilst Killing In The Name was a glorious number 1- it probably wouldnt have got there if it werent for the Facebook campaign, Uprising and Crossfire (and Manics if it does) got there on their own merits
