...why are you backing up a claim that 'most people in the UK don't know we're in debt' with an article talking about people getting benefit spending figures wrong? That's like saying just because someone doesn't know how to spell 'antidisestablishmentarianism' then we can say they're probably illiterate.

(Aside, it's bizarre that you claim to know those benefits figures yet use the same ridiculous proscriptions as most under the same illusions suggest for cutting the deficit.)

In any case, misinformation over the precise figures when it comes to things like this 1. isn't reflective of intelligence, more on media misinformation (which, uh, you're just as much guilty of falling for? You're really in no position to judge the public for idiocy on that one.) and 2. doesn't mean that they aren't aware of the very basic and obvious fact that we're in debt as a nation.

I am sure just about everyone is aware of the debt but if you do a You Gov survey on it like about benefits i doubt many will be remotely close with the true result if the benefit fraud anything to go by

The average person on the street doesn't know we are even in debt, its only intellectuals and academics that do

I am sure just about everyone is aware of the debt

Remarkable.

Remarkable.

I still maintain that most British people are ignorant / thick / not enlightened

I cant prove it but believe it to be the case

Ignorance is bliss. Selectively editing out inconvenient truths is propaganda...

Which percentile would you put yourself in intelligence-wise amongst the whole British population?

Way above average

Well i would say that, but i consider myself to be enlightened on political matters, never have i been so far out as the people in that survey

Hmm, an admission that Craig doesn't know what a percentile is?

Percentile typically implies a number, Craig...

...and in any case, ignorance on a true statistic =/= lack of intelligence (necessarily). Continuing to object to a statistic's truth on the basis of knowing one person who indicates the opposite, and continuing to cite falsehoods as fact long after being pulled up on it probably does indicate a lack of intelligence. You're a repeat offender on the latter.

Craig-baiting aside, what would you consider to be a decent measure of intelligence Craig? I'm just trying to think of quantifiable things that could go some way to disproving your assertion that most British people are thick, and I'd rather have something you wouldn't dismiss out of hand.

Preferably also stuff that could be measured (university attendance or things like that), because IQ's a bit DODGE.

The fact i was regularly Buzzjack Daily Quiz Champion when there was that daily Buzzjack quiz in my previous incarnation

I was rarely out of the final 3 at the end of each month and sometimes won overall, i frequently won the daily one, usually several times a month

The quiz league was highly competitive

Dear god Craig I was on about MEASURES FOR THE BRITISH POPULATION. The sentence 'I'm just trying to think of quantifiable things that could go some way to disproving your assertion that most British people are thick, and I'd rather have something you wouldn't dismiss out of hand.' may have just HINTED at that slightly.

Aside, it's just adorable that you think trivia is a measure of intelligence.

You disqualified IQ which is the standard benchmark of intelligence in the UK

But i think being good at quizzes is a good benchmark of intelligence - it shows a willingless and interest in learning, ability to absorb and remember facts, an element of research, quick thinking (you had a fixed number of seconds to answer 10 questions)

Intelligence is not just about knowing stuff. It is about applying that knowledge and you haven't shown much aptitude for that. Do you watch Only Connect? If so, how well do you do? As for your boasting, beating a few people half your age at a trivia quiz proves nothing.

IQ tests are a measure of intelligence but are by no means perfect. That's why it always annoys me when a member of Mensa is assumed to have good general knowledge. Some do but others do not. IQ tests just show whether you are good at a specific type of test.

Some were uni student age but many like ICR and truly talented were in their 40s so it was a mixture of all ages really, any number from 12 people to 30 played each day so it was a cross section

BBC4, Monday evening 8.30.

From what I remember the quizzes were American. I don't think my inability to answer most of the questions about American sport or televisions says anything, positive or negative, about my intelligence.

I daresay Einstein, were he still around, would probably do badly in most quizzes relying on pop culture or food & drink or English Lit or British history. It means nothing to be good at quizzes, or have an encyclopaedic knowledge of a given hobby. There are only so many hours in a day to absorb knowledge and we have google to do that for us now.... Understanding what you are reading or hearing is more the point, and being able to use the knowledge in useful or innovative ways. Or be allowed to...

Hitch-hiker's:

Marvin: "Reverse primary thrust, Marvin." That's what they say to me. "Open airlock number 3, Marvin." "Marvin, can you pick up that piece of paper?" Here I am, brain the size of a planet, and they ask me to pick up a piece of paper.

Marvin: The first ten million years were the worst. And the second ten million: they were the worst, too. The third ten million I didn't enjoy at all. After that, I went into a bit of a decline.
