Posted September 22, 201014 yr Both songs were huge hits in UK. But which one u all prefer in cover versions by JLS and The Wanted? JLS - Umbrella 6bFMkFC2qFM The Wanted - Fight For This Love GP-x2JMOmKs
September 22, 201014 yr They both murdered modern day pop classics :puke: Agreed... although Fight For This Love ain't no classic LOL.
September 22, 201014 yr I'm actually going to go with JLS's version of Umbrella. The Wanted started off fairly well but it soon started descended into being very flat and boring, I think JLS to some extent actually do the song justice.
September 22, 201014 yr I couldnt decide so I nulled vote  both are pretty good though, they do both add something new to the songs Edited September 22, 201014 yr by chart wizard
September 22, 201014 yr Umm... I picked the Cheryl cover by The Wanted. Though both weren't really great.
September 23, 201014 yr Agreed... although Fight For This Love ain't no classic LOL. I'd say it is a classic in the UK. It sold 900k, it was the biggest sales for a British artist in 2009, and further, it had a massive impact on radio, on TV and on people when it got released. 'Umbrella' sold 650k, and although the sales were less big at the time it got released, a 250k margin is quite significant. You can't brand 'Umbrella' a classic and not 'Fight for this love' in my opinion.
September 23, 201014 yr 'Umbrella' is a worldwide hit and will probably be remembered still in 10 years time. 'Fight For This Love', whilst a decent song sold so much because of X Factor, being a huge name at the time, releasing when sales in general were very high. I doubt it'll be remembered as a classic in 10 years time or so. Sales aren't everything.

I know 'Umbrella' is a worldwide hit, that's why I only compared both songs in the UK, and said 'FFTL' is a classic in the UK, not worldwide. I just feel like the reception of the song in the UK was immense, her lead on Itunes was probably the biggest lead ever, and even though sales aren't everything, selling nearly 300k in a week and 900k in total is massive. Unless you release your single on the back of winning the X Factor, noone else can do that. And it wasn't all about the sales, it was #1 on radios for 6 weeks, the video has got over 60 millions views on Youtube, that's the song everyone was talking about, etc. Whatever the reasons are (the amazingness of the song, the Nation's sweetheart, the X Factor, etc.), it looks on the verge of becoming a classic. I'm not arguing though, just trying to understand why it couldn't be classified as a 'classic'. We probably have to wait and see in a few years, but so far it ticks all the boxes and could well become a 'classic'.
September 23, 201014 yr I don't see how it will be considered a classic at all... If you look at where 'FFTL' was actually released it was only a huge hit in UK and Ireland. Wheras 'Umbrella' hit #1 in almost every country it was released in. 'FFTL' world wide peaks are not that impressive so I can't see how it will be considered a classic.

But surely, classics are to be considered for each country. There are songs that are classics in the UK but that are unknown in other countries, since the reception from one country to an other can be very different. I remember when I was in the UK, when you had those 80s or 90s countdowns on music video channels, I didn't even know most of them since they were seen as huge classics in the UK but were unknown or not even released in my country. The random British girl or boy don't care if the song has been number 1 in France, Slovenia or Taiwan. Not everyone in the UK looks at the International Chart forum of Buzzjack  Edited September 23, 201014 yr by Bert for Lashes
September 23, 201014 yr Only time will tell whether FFTL will be 'classics' or not. Sales don't equal 'classiness'. 'Umbrella' has proved somehow already that it's 'classics'. It is the defining Rihanna song, everyone knows it and it's still popular on the radio, between the masses etc.
September 23, 201014 yr tbh its to early to call either FFTL or Umbrella classics- its only been 1 and 3 years respectively since both- you need to wait at least 5 years before calling a song a classic imo, atm Umbrella is heading that way though, and FFTL certainly hasnt been forgotten anyway, enough of that :P Edited September 23, 201014 yr by chart wizard
