You should watch Gosford Park, you'd love it if you like Downton. It's a film set at a country house where a shooting weekend is held and gradually kind of moves from period drama into murder mystery territory. Maggie Smith is in it in a role not dissimilar from the Dowager Duchess and it's written by Julian Fellowes who wrote this too. Kind of the film precursor to this series if you will.

I watched that early this year. It was boring but I managed to the end. It's the type of film that usually attracts me. It didn't show the excellence of Maggie or Helen.

Oh gosh! I actually agree that it wasn't Helen Mirren's finest hour by a long shot (she had a dull character to play) but that was Maggie in her element! One of my all time favourite films without a doubt.

My favourite programme of 2010 so naturally very excited. Be interesting to see if and how they sustain a genuine historical element to this as WWI was the beginning of the end of country house set-ups such as Downton in the make-up of the last series. People had to all go help in the war effort and afterwards didn't want to go back to their original jobs "at the manor"...

I was a bit disappointed with GP too. It was ok but nowhere near as good as I was expecting it to be. It didn't really look like a film either.

There is a lot of press going on about Downton abbey. The sun has a two page spread on it the other day. Glad they are reminding people of the show again.

Begins two weeks on Sunday, Sept 18th at 9pm. SO FREAKIN' EXCITED.
The trailer for the new series is QUITE SOMETHING. Bung a bit of dramatic music over battlefields and you'll hook anyone in.

Please let Brendan Coyle get his kit off in the next series!

He's nearly as old as I am :o

I saw him in a Catherine Cookson adaptation (on the History Channel) and boy was he quite fanciable! Mind you - in Downton - I'd be quite happy if Jim Carter got his kit off!

Oh my Lord that was just amazing. The Dowager Countess of course stole every scene she was in, what's new. The real revalation for me was that I actually felt sorry for Bates, after hating him for the entire first series. His wife is a disgusting bitch who needs to die painfully and soon.

Alas, I've been babysitting all night and didn't get to watch this because apparently SOMETHING SPECIAL and PEPPA PIG are more important. But it's been recorded and I shall watch when I come in from work tomorrow PM. Reviews have been awesome though so looking forward to it.

My only sorrow is that Bates has to be so bloody heroic! Everyone who watches this series (that I know) just wants him to get it on with Anna. Now! Stuff heroics and loyalty! Anna and Bates are the hottest thing about this series! You're right - Vera has to die! I'm assuming they'll have some sort of Jane Eyre ending to her so that Bates and Anna can lawfully be together!

The WW1 scenes were brutally well done - although given how brilliant the rest is that should be no surprise.

Does anyone else not find the musical score here bloody amazing? Its just so worthy of a big-screen production. John Williams or Ennior Morricone would kill to have written this. Did they?

That's funny because everyone I know wants better for Anna than stuffy, infuriatingly selfless old Bates :D

Excellent episode though. Lady Mary as ever commanded every single one of her scenes.

It is great though to see so many ex-Corrie and Emmerdale actors getting a go (and being good) in a classic drama.

And you'd be surprised how many people find Brendan Coyle truly, frigging amazing!

The last part tonight lasted less than three minutes. Thankfully I watched it on ITV player so I didn't have to sit through a commercial break that lasted longer than the final part.
