March 24, 201114 yr How about, some wanting to do a "soft course" wanting to do it simply because they enjoy it? People doing things like sociology are going to be paying for their entire degree themselves before long anyway thanks to the government, so how can you possibly complain? Would Political Economy escape your cull out of interest? :) Politics is a valuable course, this country needs politicians both at local and national level it certainly can't be compared with something like history of art. But how likely is someone with a degree in sociology to be to pay back the loan over their lifetime ? in the current climate which could carry on for years do you see a sociology degree as a one way ticket to a job paying over £21k ? I don't
March 25, 201114 yr I went to college back in 1993 I got a small grant and didnt have to pay tuition fees. I dont know how students can survive today. Everything is geared towards tax-cuts for the rich at the expense of the poor. One big difference you have failed to factor in. In 1993 there was a much smaller percentage of the population going to university than there is now so it was affordable to subsidise students going to uni. There must be 1-2million students in the UK at uni it is simply not economically viable to give them all grants especially in tough economic times.
March 28, 201114 yr Leeds Met are charging £8,500... My Uni is charging the full amount, although little surprise there.
March 28, 201114 yr They pretty much all are charging max, with the exception of the odd Metropolitan/ex-poly. Marketisation isn't ever going to happen, I've no idea why they bother claiming it will when they set 'upper caps'...
March 28, 201114 yr They pretty much all are charging max, with the exception of the odd Metropolitan/ex-poly. Marketisation isn't ever going to happen, I've no idea why they bother claiming it will when they set 'upper caps'... So far its only been the research based ones and the the big City Uni's though hasn't it? The likes of Northumbria, Leeds/Manc/London Met, LJM and Hope will want to aswell because of their locations. All of these have to be approved by the government though, I can't see them letting every University charge £9000 apart from the elite and research based ones.
March 28, 201114 yr The criteria for letting them charge £9000 is based around whether or not there's provision for poorer students - e.g. fee waivers, bursaries etc. So long as they can prove there's adequate provision, it's pretty much free for all...
March 28, 201114 yr Author But the amount the government is asking universities to spend on poorer students really isn't a lot... my uni (Birmingham), which is going to charge £9000, apparently already spends the required amount just by sending people to schools in deprived areas to do talks... and, although there's more students from poor backgrounds there than the likes of Oxbridge, access still probably isn't wide enough. So it's obvious that Nick Clegg's promise that higher fees would atleast mean more poorer people going to the top unis clearly isn't going to be met. Plus, rather hilariously, despite the government claiming the fees rise was intended to reduce the deficit, it looks like it's actually going to cost the government MORE in the short term, as they're going to have to stump up loans of £9000 to pretty much every student - it's going to take 10 years, when graduates start repaying significant parts of their fees back, before it starts to turn a profit...
March 28, 201114 yr ^But they're hoping it will put OFF people going to University aren't they? And hoping a lot of students will just go in to the working world after A-Levels
March 28, 201114 yr Ooooooooh St Andrews is not going to be happy about this. Although, getting more English students will thrill them.
March 30, 201114 yr Leeds Met are charging £8,500... Leeds Met has a f**king nerve.... It's 97th in League Tables with a 111 out of 250 student satisfaction rating.... Average, AT BEST.... When the Condems sold this lemon, they told us it was only going to be "top" universities who would be charging over 6K.... Another pack of lies......
March 30, 201114 yr ^But they're hoping it will put OFF people going to University aren't they? And hoping a lot of students will just go in to the working world after A-Levels They're hoping it'll raise them some money, I think that's pretty much the only reason and as Danny pointed out, they're going to be waiting a while

When the Condems sold this lemon, they told us it was only going to be "top" universities who would be charging over 6K.... Another pack of lies...... A prediction cannot be described as a lie. Plenty of people said at the start of the football season that Chelsea would be champions. They probably won't be. That doesn't mean the people who made those predictions were lying. The real test will be whether the government stick to their pledge to apply conditions to universities who wish to charge £9000. Unlike some people, I'm not going to pre-judge that question.

I find it ridiculous that Leeds Poly Met will be charging the same as Leeds University. I just think that it will make more young people think 'Sod it! If they're all going to be charging the higher rate - I may as well put an application in for a PROPER university' I know I would. Kath

It's silly really, it's a no brainer on the Academic side. But people are paying for the location as well which is imo why they're setting the fees so high.
April 1, 201114 yr There's also the matter that the higher grade requirements will mean people won't apply for Leeds. Sill, it's mad that the Met is charging the same.

But people are paying for the location as well which is imo why they're setting the fees so high. That's a seriously dubious justification.... I mean, sorry, but what a crock... London Met has a campus slap bang in the middle of the City of London in the heart of the financial district, near St Paul's Cathedral and the Bank of England, yet they've pledged to only charge £6K... So, errr, yeah, Leeds Met using the "location" card...... REALLY.....???

Unlike some people, I'm not going to pre-judge that question. Dude, that's a technicality. Clegg very blatantly sold this whole idea on the arguement that very few universities would charge the full amount... Now, I'm sorry, but if they let a very average uni get away with charging this, then everyone's gonna be at it.... Facts are it should ONLY be the Top 20 or 30 that are allowed to do this.... Mind you, not that I agree with fees anyway, education should be free and then after you pay a graduate tax.... Not be saddled with a completely outrageous debt which the banks and loan companies can profit from....

So, errr, yeah, Leeds Met using the "location" card...... REALLY.....??? But its a lot cheaper to live in Leeds than it is London - so one could offset the other. I have to be honest though - I've lived in both and if I had my time over - I'd still choose (as a student) to live in Leeds. However if I was going to pay the same for the former poly and the proper university - I'd be applying for the proper one. Kath
April 1, 201114 yr my uni (KCL) hasn't announced but I'd be SERIOUSLY surprised if they charge less than 9k. they recently bought part of somerset house to house the law department for a RIDICULOUS price (can't remember exactly) and are now in the process of cutting the important things (lecturer's pensions, staff etc.). that more than anything has pissed me off recently.
