I saw this debate on DS and decided to turn it into a poll to get a better idea of opinions.

Personally, I would have to say Dannii for both. Cheryl seems to have a limited range of cliches and selects one for each contestant to use in judging their performance. I think Dannii gives constructive criticism and, rather than simply saying what they did wrong, offers advice on how to improve. As a mentor, Dannii seems to take much better care of her contestants. So far this year, most of her song choices have been spot-on and, unlike the other judges, she has actually paid attention to the themes of each week.

Yeah, it's gonna be Dannii on both counts for me aswell really.

On the judging firstly, I feel that Cheryl comments mostly on how the contestants actually looked, and combined with a few of the show's cliques ''You look like a popstar, you sound like a popstar blah blah blah'' she claws a comment of sorts together. There's also an element that she only really says what she thinks the public want to hear instead of an actual opinion and she seems unable to think of anything all that interesting or original either which Dannii does.

If you think about it there's a lot of banter between Simon/Cheryl and Simon/Cheryl/Louis but rarely ever with Dannii. The fact that she can still hold her own and be noticed proves a lot of strengths in her.

Mentoring, well, I'll give it to Dannii purely because it's been noted by many how she's apparantly the one who spends a lot of time with her contestants during the programme and also after. Both of them get it completly right on some occasions song choices wise but can also get it completly wrong.

Better judge- Dannii, her comments are far more professional than Cheryl's and she seems to be the only judge who isnt looking for media attention as she judges the sing-off on the performances given- unrelated but when Simon is given the decision, he seems to judge it on what would get the show talked about hence the Lucie-Jedward fiasco

Better Mentor- Cheryl, to be fair to her, she's had the winner for two years in a row and all the time, she always supported Alex and Joe and they never really were stitched up or given the wrong song, plus she did well with Diana and Lloyd too- Dannii on the other hand makes awful song choices, and its kind of her fault her acts didnt do as well as expected last year- Lucie crashed out early due to the wrong song (a disney song, that not many would've known) and Stacey was made out to be a copycat Leona which wasnt the aim- and Dannii hasnt had an act in the final 2 for two years now except 2007, where she managed them both well

of course Cheryl's made some mistakes (TreyC last week, a notable one and constantly giving Cher a rap song another one) and Dannii has much improved this year with Matt- but overall, I'd say Cheryl's better

Better judge: Dannii definitely - she tells it like it is and is always fair/honest. Moreso than any of the others these days imo.

Better mentor: Cheryl - Dannii's song choices are often a bit strange for her contestants - whereas Cheryl's are quite often spot on - she's slightly more in touch with modern pop culture and it shows.

Danni as both better judge and mentor. As a judge she can think for herself, is not Simon's lapdog like Cheryl and gives constructive feedback. With Cheryl it is all about her and most of what comes out of her mouth is pretty boring and basic.I prefer Danni as a mentor although some of her songs choices are not great I think she shows a huge amount of care and concern for all her acts.Cheryl has always played favourites with her acts and this year has reached a new low as she does not even try and hide it.Her attitude to Treyc and Rebecca and her obvious favouritism of Cher and Katie is disrespectful. She clearly favoured Diana Vickers over Alex in 2008 and Diana got both better song choices and rarely performed first like Alex did a number of times.Joe also got better song choices than the other two last year and he was obviously her favourite then.

Dannii on both accounts.

She seems to really care about her contestants, almost always gets her song choices spot on and will admit when she (rarely) gets it wrong.

She also judges them based on their performances not about if they "look like a popstar" or "sound like a popstar".

Cheryl isn't bad though, better than Louis.

Dannii is the better judge but Cheryl is the better montor.

When Dannii gives her comments after each performance, she manages to say something constructive, original and different. As already stated, when Cheryl comments it's all very predictable run-of-the-mill comments. How many times can Louis and Cheryl say "you look like a star, you act like a star, you perform like a star".

However, Cheryl definitely has a knack for song choices. Dannii often seems to choose songs she likes rather than songs that would suit the contestant. The biggest example of this being Ruth Lorenzo who smashed it in the sing offs performing songs she wanted to sing. Singing the songs Dannii chose, Ruth crumbled like a broken biscuit. :( That said, I don't like the idea that despite taking 4 girls through, Cheryl only cares for two of them - that's the impression I've been getting too. Sadly, that can be applied to Simon (One Direction) and Louis (Mary) as they clearly don't give a toss about their other acts. Dannii seems to treat her acts equally but like I say, her song choices are often terrible.

I would say that Cheryl and Dannii get their song choices right on the same amount of occasions. However, I say that remembering that Simon is partly responsible for Cheryl's song choices. He has previously admitted to 'helping' Cheryl quite a bit.
Now now, aren't they both puppets told what to say by the men in suits? As for 'mentoring', Christ, I bet Cheryl doesn't even speak to them outwith the broadcasts.

No.

Dannii for both. Cheryl has improved as a judge although still there are performances where the only comment she makes is about the contestant's outfit or something similiarly trivial and you wonder why she doesn't mention the vocal or something actually relevant.

I'm going to be a typical Buzzjack Gai and go Dannii for both.

Like Jark says, Cherly IS improving as a judge. Her first season her idea of judging involved telling the young contestants how "cute" they looked, and how "adorable" the oldies were. She does now on occasion offer actual constructive criticism, and she's more willing to speak out against Simon.

However Dannii is the only one of the 4 that I think actually makes a proper effort to JUDGE everytime, and seems to be the least involved in the internal politics of the show.

As a mentor, I actually think both do a pretty decent job; certainly it seems that both put in more time with the contestants than Simon. However I think Cherly often plays it a little too safe with the song choices, whereas Dannii is more willing to take a risk. Sometimes it completely falls utterly flat (Rachel Hylton being given Robyn was an unmitigated DISASTER), but at the same time sometimes it gives rise to some GENIUS performances - Matt Cardle is a good example this year. I wasn't expecting to be wowed by him pre-live shows, but he has, and a lot of that has been down to some very clever song choices, when Louis or Cherly would most likely have just shoved him out there to sing James Blunt every week.

Dannii's issue is she seems to reserve her warmness for the backstage moments with her acts, whilst on the actual judging panel she can come across like a cold fish, which then allows Cherly to sweep in and claim the Queen of Hearts crown.

Better judge - Dannii - She never makes tactical voting, always send home who deserve to leave. :P

Better mentor - Cheryl - Oh well, shes the only one with 4 acts left, no? This says everything. :D

Judge, probably Dannii and that's just about out all 4. Simon has his cannonball moments, and Louis is such a grumpy diva.

Mentor definitely Cheryl, 2 winners in a row, genius song choices (I would never have picked the song Katie did last week, I started thinking Bugsy Malone during it oddly enough).
