November 2, 201014 yr Does anybody have a list of tracks that climbed from initial sales of below 100,000 to sales of over 100,000? All I can think of is Just the Way You Are, and Meet Me Halfway from recently, but there's probably some obvious others I'm forgetting. I guess Killing in the Name would count too. I think it's truly amazing when songs manage to do that. It's the sort of thing that seems to happen like once a year now, although I suppose it was a more common occurance in previous decades? I believe Spice Girls - Wannabe did it as well, selling around 73,000 (at #3) on its first week and then reaching #1 with sales of over 100,000 for several weeks.

November 2, 201014 yr Alan Jones' chart commentary in Music Week for 27 February 1999 doesn't give an actual sales figure for Runaway but does say that Britney Spears' ...Baby One More Time sold nearly 464,000 and outsold the number two by a margin of five to one. So certainly 90,000 and 100,000 would be a possibility.

The entire top 5 singles in Xmas 1997 sold over 100k each. What were the sales for the top 5? I think i heard 2 Become 1 sold 498,000 that week?

November 10, 201014 yr I think the sales of Heartbeat/Tragedy resurged when the media started promoting the 'other side' of the double AA, didn't they? Much as Boney M did with Rivers of Babylon/Brown Girl In The Ring about 20 years previously.

Tragedy as the B-side became more famous than the A-side in the end...and dare I say it, certainly for my generation, more famous than the original Bee Gees version! why was It Wasn't Me so popular? I remember the song being very popular at the time, but I never knew why. I mean, the song was good, but it wasn't that good. Was it seen as some sort of gimmick, or something? 1) Triumphant return of Shaggy, who was huge in the mid 90s (a bit like if, I dunno, Franz Ferdinand came back with a killer track now. Approx same amount of time away) 2) Instantly memorable sing-along tune, especially trying to imitate Shaggy's voice. So memorable I've got it in my head even writing this. 3) As tame as it is now, it was quite risque at the time with the "butt-naked banging on the bathroom door" (which I think was even censored in the radio edit). The 'I Kissed A Girl' of its day. I like it as until recently it was one of the very few million sellers in the last decade to sell 100% on its own merit - not a charity release or talent show winner, all bought simply by people hearing the song and liking it. Can't Get You Out of My Head was the same, and recently we've had Sex On Fire, Poker Face and I Gotta Feeling!
