I hope this counts as on-topic...

Play more songs / read fewer bloody txt messages!

(It was a welcome relief last week, when Scott Mills covered for Reggie, as the above actually happened!)

Announce the songs *before* they play each one - don't automatically assume people know which they are!

Expand the the album chart to more than just 5 places.

One of my pet peeves is the OTT suspense. If there is genuine doubt over the result, then it's fair enough, but it pisses me off when, like tonight, they'll *pretend* that everyone in the country doesn't already bloody know Matt Cardle will be #1.

The biggest improvement though, must surely be - FIRE REGGIE YATES!

When Mark Goodier hosted the show I could set my clock by it - 4-4:45pm positions 40-31; 4;45-5:30 pm positions 30-21. The album chart was read out at 5:30pm (Top ten) then positions 20-11 were from 5:30-6:15pm and the TopTen would be in the last 45 minutes. I miss that - the album chart rundown (which I agree should be a Top Ten) seems to move about alot.

Do a recap of the Top 40 before the number 1 (I'm guessing they don't do that to encourage people to check out their website).

When recapping positions 40-31 (or 30-21 etc) tell us which singles climb, fall, stay the same or are new to the chart.

Personally I'd prefer the presenter to be neutral - I still recall being annoyed that JK and Joel slagged off Crazy Frog getting to number one. Thousands of people bought it - who is the chart show DJ to rip into those people. Same with their tastes in music - I know Reggie likes urban, grime,r n b etc but I don't need to know this - I had no idea what music Mark Goodier liked. I know Reggie has a man crush on Michael Buble - he tells me every time Buble is on the chart show. Mark Goodier could have had a similiar crush on Ritchie from 5ive but I didn't care - just read the chart and know your subject matter.

Finally, if you're firing Reggie (I do like him as radio presenter just not so keen as a chart show host) get Scott Mills or Greg James to do it.

Vidcapper, Greg James did the show last week, not Scott Mills - Greg is definitely the way forward IMO, he's very good at doing the midweek chart and he showed great potential as a main chart host (he only skipped one song, yet he finished on time which Reggie sometimes doesn't do after skipping eight or nine songs).

It'd also be nice to have a host who's not racist (Reggie always makes fun of people with European accents, specifically Scandinavian ones)

And finally, they need chart producers to bloody *check their facts* - they've been claiming Rihanna's album was a 'new entry last week' for 2 weeks now and I wouldn't be surprised if they did it again this week.

To replace Reggie would be the main one lol.

Also,to play ALL the songs like the other chart show does! I have not listened to Radio 1's chart show since August mainly because of Reggie and his annoying ways.I listen to the Big Top 40 now and if they can cover 50 songs(the top 10 of the last week and then their top 40) in 3 hours, albeit cutting some a little short,i don't understand why Radio 1 can't play the entire Top 40.

When Radio 1 get a good presenter in place, then i'll start listening to the chart show again lol.

Or neutered, in Reggies case? :w00t:

But how many of them will still admit that, now?

Then I'd better not apply to replace Reggie. :P

Oh right - it was just such a relief to have *anyone* else doing it.

Fot the past several years I've used my HDD/DVD recorder to time-shift the chart show. I can then start listening after 5.30pm, FF'ing through Reggie's between-song drivel, and songs of a certain genre... :P , and still catch up by the time they reach the top 2.

Reggie has GOT to go. He's bound to be out on his ear as soon as his contract comes up for renewal, now that he's getting just over half the audience Big Top 40 are getting (about 1.2 million). The show is virtually unlistenable since he is so irritating.

I thought Greg was fantastic last week, and I think he will be able to satisfy both the teenage audience they are going for, and the chart purists at the same time. I prefer it when they do play more songs, though I understand sometimes it's nice to have guests in the studio and they might have to skip a couple - perhaps a good compromise is for some of the long-running songs they can edit them down - e.g. they could do a nice "segue" of songs 37-34 playing 90 seconds or so each. (The Swedish top 40 show does this and I always think it sounds quite good)

Agree that the DJ should be neutral (didn't hear Greg slagging anyone off and showed no bias to Ellie Goulding - his girlfriend), and he shouldn't be constantly trying to be "the star" - Reggie constantly talks about himself and yes I don't give a $h!t about his "mancrush" on Buble.

The biggest problem for me at the moment is that it doesn't SOUND like a chart show. It needs snappier links and what would help that would be to use consistent sound beds between songs - like the ones Bruno and Mark used to use. Say something relevant about each song as well - are the band on tour this week, has the album just been certified platinum, has the fit one sprained her ankle filming a new video. The show just used to flow so much better the way Mark used to do it - and it wasn't just boring "that was X at 23 and this is Y at 22".

Less text messages read out - just because a few dozen listeners will be pleased to hear their name called out on the radio, the other million listeners do not give a $h!t. "Interactivity" does not boost listening figures. I wouldn't say get rid of it altogether - just only read one out if someone texts something genuinely interesting. Not "Claire from Portsmouth wants The Wanted to be number 1 because Siva is sooo fit".

Perhaps more important than the presenter is hiring a decent PRODUCER who has the same vision as we do. There's no point in hiring Greg and then getting a new producer in who brings in more competitions and chit-chat.

When recapping positions 40-31 (or 30-21 etc) tell us which singles climb, fall, stay the same or are new to the chart.

And when the songs are announced as well - sometimes it's not said before or after and it might have climbed up a few places and we don't even know. Greg appeared to be better at doing this last week.

Greg James should takeover, and Chart Trivia should be scrapped, and they should play about 37 out of 40 songs, not 30.

And like the OP said don't make it so tense when half the time we know who's going to number one before the show starts. We also don't care what your favourites from last nights X Factor were.

They should have new features next year, like, maybe a chart rewind "This time last year Rage Against The Machine went to number one, back in 1993 Mr Blobby was top of the charts", and then play the song.

Err... I'd like to veto that suggestion! :P

Yeah, RATM maybe, Mr Blobby not so much

It's true though, 99% of the problems with this show would be solved if they just got rid of Reggie

yeah I think most would agree changing the host. Also I don't think that texts should be read out on national radio... Especially during the chart show!

If I returned to work for the BBC (Not likely, as it's now certified a shower), first of all axe Radio One altogether, change Radio 2's name to reflect a more approriate audience. The R2 Audience age range is about 15-45. Broadcast the Top 40 on the new R2 (think I'd call Radio 2, Family Radio). The host of the Top 40 wouldn't be any of the current gang. It'd would be Sean Tilley, dynamic presenter with lots of Radio experience in his 40s. Lots of fantastic jingles & sound effects denoting fallers/climbers/new entries. Number jingles with the word "Number" included at front, not this blink & you miss "8" stuff. Slick stuff, hardly any chat, all 40 records played in 2 hours & 35minutes, that's all the time you need for 40 songs.

Starting at 4-6.35 The Complete no nonsense Top 40 Countdown followed by the Clicks to Pick next Sunday...the 25 mins of New hits/Bubblers. That's it, no stupid texts from 5 year olds, no emails. Just factful info. So, slick it makes your head throb with dynamic presentation.

I liked Reggie when he was with Fearne, but on his own he seems lost and he just isn't a chart presenter. Either get Fearne back with him or replace him with Greg James. If they want to keep Reggie so much, why not just give him Greg's show. Then he can do the chart update, only 30 mins we'll have to tolerate him for. Reggie without Fearne is like Ant without Dec imo.

I'm still just really bitter than they skipped Check It Out last week. If they're going to play more than 35 songs from now on, they may aswell play them all. Seriously, I was absolutely furious that they didn't play Check It Out.

Also, have a less biased presenter. It really annoyed me that Ridin' Solo was made fun of every week. Aswell as Don't Stop Believin' by Glee Cast. He didn't even seem to be trying to not show bias against that song.

Another thing is, I like the interviews they do with artists in the chart. Infact, I LOVE them, but it annoys me how in some interviews they end up talking about the weather or something. The interviews are great, but they need to talk about the music imo.

Also, instead of those chart trivia questions, or "X Factor top 5", and all those other features, I think a MUCH better and more interesting feature would be to perhaps look at all the #1s in other countries, and play the ones which haven't charted in the UK (yet), or aren't planned for release.

Another thing I'd like them to do, at the beginning of the show is like "bubbling under" chart, where they play the new entries that chart between #41 and #50.

Those are absolutely AMAZING ideas  Even if they just did an american chart thing it would be cool, but I wish they would do the European charts, my local radio had a US Chart Show (actually the proper Top 40 show with Casey Kasern(sp?)) and a European top 10 show. Bubbling unders wouldn't have made sense 2-3 years ago, it would have just been a list of songs that weren't good enough to enter the top 40, but now with the downlaod era in full force, many songs between 41-75 (I think that should be the secion, not just top 50) are massive future hits in the making.

I agree with this too. As you said the chart is much more than the top 40 these days and songs that chart between 41-75 aren't necessarily not popular enough. Big artists miss the top 40 all the time nowadays, compared to ten years ago when outside the top 40 the new entries were mostly just more random songs with barely any airplay.

I mean, just look at some of the acts between 41-75 last week that have never made it yet:

Flo Rida

Manic Street Preachers

The Script

Plain White Ts

Plan B

Cheryl Cole

Tinie Tempah

Professor Green

Joe McElderry

Kings of Leon

Then compare it to the same week ten years ago:

Foo Fighters

Quo Vidas

At The Drive-In

Reef

Guru's Jazzmataz

M Dubs

Busta Rhymes

Vicious Circles

See the big difference?

Apart from that, I'm not bothered really. The only reason I don't listen to the chart show much these days is because I can't stand Reggie's voice. Seriously gets on my nerves far more than any of the other things he does, lol. So yes, I agree that Reggie should GO, but not necessarily for the same reason as everyone else.
