I've added all of 1996's weeks where the no.1 sold more than 100k :)

What d'yous think? :)

Edited by Storm Lee

287000- Cher- Believe 3rd week

Believe sold 187,000 in its 3rd week; it opened with 107, and increased to 205 on its 2nd.

It's quite sad that 9 tracks from the the top 10 are from/because of reality shows!

Edited by Aidan

There must have been some massive sales back in the 70s (obviously figures are very scarce). Slade for example - the bulk of Merry Xmas... sales must have come back in 1973 but the song was only in the chart for 9 weeks (5 at number 1).

Another Brick In The Wall too - only 12 weeks top 75 but 5 at number 1 in 79/80

The Beatles single 'Cant buy me love' had 1.2 million pre orders(customer orders) in 1964. But it was not possible in those days to deliver that number of physical singles in a week(not many motorways in those days), the actual sales in the first week are unknown.

Singles in those days were much more expensive anyway, a single would cost the equivalent of £15 these days, albums £60! as a proportion of national average wage.

The whole top 10 from the 2000's has something to do with a reality show - I include Helping Hiati as its Simon Cowell & includes X Factor acts. The highest non-reality show related song is Bob The Builder, oh Britain

I was literally about to say that!

How sad is this country?
