June 9, 201114 yr .... this is an album I keep finding new gems on - On Battleship Hill is just BEAUTIFUL......
September 6, 201113 yr Fantastic album. On first listen I liked it overall - three or four outstanding tracks, not that fussed on some others. After more listens, love it. If you hear it once and aren't that pleased with it, give it time - I can see it being a real grower on people. Hopefully her second Mercury (and a losing nomination as Best British Female 2012!) Well done Mr Squire. You read it here first :)
September 6, 201113 yr I think it's a very strong contender for a Mercury nomination and a Brits Best British Female nomination has to be a good bet too. She won't win Best British Female (Adele has to be the front-runner at the moment) but it would be good to see her getting more recognition. It absolutely deserves to get a nod at the Mercurys, I'd quite like to see her have a second victory actually as it's a really strong album. Imagine if she did get another Mercury :o This is just absolutely fukkin' exceptional stuff from a truly gifted artist who's never really had the recognition that her vast, Grand Canyon-sized talent deserves, if anyone deserves a "lifetime achievement" award it's P J, because she not only has her own unique style, she always strives to do something different with each album... Let England Shake is not only a fantastic Alternative/Indie album, it's also a fantastic Folk album too, taking folk music off into a different dimension, and doing things with folk music which are every bit as innovative and ground-breaking as the likes of Bob Dylan and Fairport Convention did... The term "genius" is often very inaccurately bandied around these days to the extent that it's become an irrelevant phrase, but there really doesn't seem to be any other word that can adequately describe an artist like P J Harvey..... Is it too early to start chiselling a name in the bit of marble marked "Album of the Year" yet...? Heck, it might not even be considered previous to start planning on chiselling out the one marked "Album of the Decade" tbh..... OH MY GOD She and her music are officially the greatest things that has ever happened on Earth. Let England Shake is by far the best album of 2011: poppy but not pretentious, raw but romantic. Everything on it is in its right place. album of the year And a few people seemed to agree :D
September 6, 201113 yr Would anyone reccomend this? I mean obviously you're highly praising it but I'm unsure whether I will like it. I really like The Words That Maketh Murder and I enjoy Florence & The Machine, Kate Bush and the like, is it similar to them or am I being way off the mark?

I've mentioned elsewhere that I'm not usually a fan of Harvey's... but Let England Shake is phenomenal..... the instrumentation is quite Kate Bush, the experimentation with ancient insruments etc..... very interesting..... and Florence... well, Florence has taken all the best bits from all the best females (Siouxsie most notably).. so if you appreciate her, I can't really see how you wouldn't 'get' Harvey.
September 6, 201113 yr I'll probably give it a go tomorrow, I just put The Words That Maketh Murder and it's as euphoric as I remember!
September 6, 201113 yr So pleased. One of my records of the year with ease. So very deserved. WHAT MORE CAN I SAY.

It's her most accessible album for a long time. If you've got a Spotify account, listen to it there first. If you like Florence and Kate Bush, you'll probably like Let England Shake.

I shall get onto it tomorrow, I'm hearing nothing but praise and if it's like Florence and Kate it must be worth a listen.
September 7, 201113 yr Author The genious of Let England Shake is that you don't need to 'get' it as it's phenomenal whether you're a fan of mainstream pop or indie music.
