Yeah, like in 2000 when people said "Let's see where Usher and Eminem are in 10 years time".

Eminem was always going to stick around after the Marshall Mathers LP. That practically secured his status as a rap/hip hop legend. So unless he retired, died or something else tragic, he definitely wasn't going to disappear...

Fair point about Usher, though. He's been quite lucky that he's managed to pop out a monster hit or two every now and then to keep him relevant. That said, he wasn't even close to being the best of the 90s R&B artists so it's actually quite annoying he's one of the few surviving ones, when most of the more interesting/ground breaking ones have either dropped out of the mainstream or died :(

I'd have expected Britney to have faded out around 2002 tbh

Why? That was just when she started getting interesting

To be fair, I'd've probably predicted wrong. I probably would've said Britney Spears. Not sure what I would've said about the others. I probably wouldn't have said Eminem, because people who don't have a clue always presume urban artists never have any longevity (what they REALLY mean is that Heart FM don't play rap music, so they think they're forgotten after a few years, when they're not), and I was one of those people back in 1999. I didn't really have a clue back then, although I did LOVE My Name Is.

Britney and Eminem (and Xtina) just SCREAMED superstar potential, the hype and aura around them, I'm not surprised they're still huge, and I guess Xtina DID have a #1 album last year :heehee:

But I remember Bailamos smashing, assuming he was just living off his father's name and being a one hit wonder riding the crest of 1999's latin boom (especially when the follow up missed the top 40!) and then Enrique returned with huge hits in 2002, 2004, 2007, 2009 and then 2010, all hugely different to each other and certainly different to Bailamos. It would be to me like Mike Posner still being huge in 2023!

As marvellous as those backing vocals are, 'Grenade' really is quite annoying. Maybe I'm just annoyed at how he's gradually becoming a bit more stalkery with every single. If the lead single to album #2 doesnt feature him breaking into her house & taking her and her new less-clingy boyfriend hostage I will be very dissapointed indeed.

WTF are you on about

great number 1 shame that rihanna and drake couldn't get no.2

But they've already *been* #2... :P

Bruno Mars seems like a cool guy.

And Billionaire should've got #1 instead of All Time Low...

If 'All Time Low' didn't exist it still wouldn't have got #1 though...

The backing vocals are probably my favourite part of Grenade though.

he's joking

It's very hard to pick up sarcasm on the internet :(

Yeah, We No Speak Americano beat it to #2 at the last minute. I remember we were all really surprised about it. I think it's because Billionaire was #2 on iTunes the entire week, so we presumed it'd be there officially. I think We No Speak Americano had lots of entries lower down the chart.

But they've already *been* #2... :P

Better than the Jessie J rubbish,

Also why is everyone slagging off grenade when everyone was loving it earlier on in the week

Official Chart Company tweeted :

@brunomars has the biggest first week sales for a single released in January since Babylon Zoo’s Spaceman in 1996

Nice stat!

WOW, Grenade has sold 150k!

Oh my goodness! :o

That's actually incredible!

I remember being amazed by Replay's sales this time last year!

This JLS song sounds like everything else they did, the only difference is that is has Tinnie Tempah on it.
