April 2, 201411 yr The ending would have been great if they'd paced the last season differently. HIMYM seems to be almost the only sitcom which isn't normally obsessed with putting weddings at the very end of a series so I don't see why they couldn't have just had the wedding a few episodes earlier (and cut out crappy episodes like "Mom and Dad") and given us more time to get used to everything that got thrown into the finale. Ultimately, as much as I thought Tracy was brilliant, it worked. There's also the symmetry (or lack of) of Ted losing her and then going back to his other "perfect" partner after she'd already lost hers and then found him. Barney's story actually worked despite looking like it might be a complete mess because even if he ends up single you get the feeling he's changed. My main sore spot was actually that they didn't seem to know what to do with Marshall and Lily.
April 2, 201411 yr I still don't see why in 22 episodes they used for the Wedding they couldn't have cut it shorter and used some of the event from the final in more details. FIVE births (Lilly and Marshal's second and third), Ellie, Luke and Penny A marriage breaking down leading to divorce Lilly and Marshal in Rome Marshal getting his judgeship Ted and Tracy's marriage Tracy's illness, death, funeral etc. (This was all done in about 10 second she got sick and died) And that's just to begin with. April 2, 201411 yr Author But that was the show. It was never going to delve too much into their relationship together because it was a show about how he MET her. Not about how their relationship was or whatever. Which is why the ending worked when his kids said "Dad. This was more about a story of how much you love Aunt Robin. Mum barely featured at all! She's been gone for 6 years and we love Aunt Robin, so you should get with her." or whatever. Plus he needed a reason to actually tell the kids this story, he wasn't going to tell them just randomly. So having the mother die was a perfectly reasonable excuse to kind of get the kids blessing on him and Robin. I just really loved it because we got both endings. He seemed to have a good life with Tracy AND ended up getting with Robin! I'm probably just easy to please, but I thought they handled it brilliantly. My mate also asked me (about the spin off) what if Barney's "number 31" is the story for 'How I Met Your Father'? It'd make sense tbh, because the HIMYM cast are apparently going to have cameo's.
April 2, 201411 yr It just dawned on me how important it became that Robin's job saw her travelling loads when her and Barney were married and yet by 2030 she was properly settled in New York again.
April 3, 201411 yr Just wanted to type up my thoughts and feelings. I'm not using the spoiler tags either - don't see much point.. it's been more than 2 days now.. if someones going to read this knowing the finale just happened - by all means - read below. I wanted to start off by saying this is really the first sitcom I've watched in it's entirety live. I think I was like 6 when Friends started - so I didn't watch it when I was a kid (but I do watch syndication and have seen the series in it's entirety) so with that being said, I have somewhat of a strong bond to this show!! As far as the finale goes - I think it was a complete slap in the face to the viewers. Not only just the finale was horrible - so was the last season. A "24" plot really doesn't work for this show. It was like they completely made up a new show of an already existing story-line. The show is really about 6 people, living in New York. Barney sleeps with everyone. Ted's trying to find his wife.. and so on and so forth. They did somewhat of a decent job of showing other non-wedding related stuff. But it was not enough. What was really pathetic was in the first half of the season trying to cover up Jason Segel's complete disinterest in the show at all. He never made any tapings so they filmed his scenes off site with a green screen. Sure he was probably filming a movie - but the point I'm trying to make, to Jason and to the Producers - if you cannot commit - don't do it. There was a lot of talk of the 8th season being the last, and it was going to but they convinced Jason (the only holdout) to do one more season. Had I known this was what we were going to get for the last season - I wish they would have quickly just wrapped it up at the end of Season 8. The last 30 minutes of the finale was an episode of it's own too... so much to cover, but I really don't have the energy to do it all. At the end of the day.. they really just threw Cobie Smulders (Robin) under the bus, which is really upsetting because she was actually one of my favorite characters. Why spend an ENTIRE SEASON with Robin/Barney when you're going to flush it down the toilet in the last 30 minutes of the last episode..... REALLY!? Killing off the Mother. Ehh. We all saw that coming. The problem isn't that they did this - but that they really should have just followed the progression of the series to date. Season 9 really should have been about a regular storyline. Maybe Barney/Robin stay together, maybe not.. but really just have Ted meet Tracy.. have a few dates.. get engaged.. get married.. That's it. That's the entire season. It end's out the title - How I Met Your Mother and answers a few other questions as well. Holy Crap. Still cannot believe how horrible this whole last season was. Really.. Really disappointing. Edited April 3, 201411 yr by Aaron.
April 3, 201411 yr Not a fan of the way they ended the show at all...disappointing IMO but for the whole show has been hit and miss
September 6, 201410 yr http://www.hollywoodtake.com/how-i-met-you...producers-55648 Alternative Ending. Not any better. Infact, this is the ending we got - minus all of the bullshit. Also, this ending was CLEARLY not TV tailored.. It was essentially a minute of "This happened, this happened, this happened, this happened, this happened ect.." where I actually think the episode before the finale with the montage successfully cleared all of that up. Apparently they took two stabs at this and both were horrible. Such a shame. This was one of my favorite shows.
September 6, 201410 yr That was literally the same thing without the death of the mother . Edited September 6, 201410 yr by Neil. S
