This is just me, but I've never cared about the voice. A good voice is a bonus, but I wouldn't like Forget You, whether it was sung by Bruno Mars, or Rihanna, or Olly Murs, or Katy Perry. Likewize, I'd love, Firework whether it was sung by Justin Bieber, or Lady Gaga, or Mariah Carey, or Cheryl Cole. A nice voice is more like an added bonus to me, and if there's a song where the voice is too annoying or something, I just get an instrumental to listen to.

I'd say females are better singers too tbh. If you look at the best/strongest singers such as Celine Dion, Leona Lewis, Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey etc. they're mostly female. The male singers tend to be vocally weaker. Or maybe it's just that I really prefer females?

You're confusing range with quality of singing. Female voices can go much higher, so tend to sound more "impressive". I think they're one octave higher, though some males can probably go that high too. But that's on average.

Of course, someone like Michael Jackson comes to mind as a male singer with a very impressive vocal range that can compete with some females.

How come there are so many old songs in the iTunes Top 100?

Is it normal to have so many old songs in the Top 100?

I judge songs by exactly that; the song. If it's performed by a female, great. If it's performed by a male, great. The sex of the artist is irrelevant as far as I'm concerned. I do find it funny though when people say "if Bruno Mars keeps Ke$ha off no. 1, I will kill him". That type of comment makes no sense whatsover!!! If they said "Bruno Mars outsold Ke$ha by just 12 copies  I'm gonna kill 12 people who bought Grenade", then I'd understand. :P

I don't think its necessarily that people prefer females to males because of their gender, its just that more pop music is sung by females nowadays, and so naturally there will be a bias. Also, there are few big male popstars in the way that GaGa, Britney etc are. There's no David Bowie for the 2010s, so far, so "looning" is mostly directed to women.

My iTunes is pretty equally divided between genres such as pop, rap, hip-hop, indie and alternative. There's pretty much an equal division of males to females overall. So whereas I seem to prefer more female pop music than male pop music, and more male rap music to female rap music, I think it's just that there seems to be a slight gender imbalance in popular artists of these genres. So for every Nicki Minaj or Missy Elliott, there is a Drake and a Kanye and a Jay-Z. Similarly, for every Bruno Mars or Enrique there is a Jessie J, Ke$ha and Rihanna.

I don't like Bruno Mars, but that isn't because he is male, or because I hate his voice (it's great), it's just because I don't like his songs. You can't say that "average" female singers are liked more than "brilliant" male singers, because opinion is personal.

Actually I think the main thing is not buzzjacks hate of males, I think its because most male artists that are doing well in the charts at the moment as either rappers or urban acts and I think the females out there at the moment are doing more of the conventional pop songs (Katy Perry, Lady Gaga) or are doing more meaningful songs (Adele) and I think that is far more buzzjacks cup of tea than the urban sound. I know people like Bruno Mars doesn't fall into that category and actually I have seen a lot of love for him on this forum compared to the majority of male acts. I think it comes down to the music they make in the end.

Same. For example, I love listening to Lady Gaga's LoveGame instrumental, I don't like her voice in it and the lyrics annoy me. The instrumental is amazing though.

I think its due to a lot of songs being reduced to 59p :/

Not like 20p or 40p is going to make much of a difference :P

Apparently they've had their prices reduced by 40p! I'm surprised it had so much of an effect though. I don't use iTunes very much. Was the price cut advertized on the first page? Or have dozens of people been checking iTunes everyday just incase a Unfaithful, Lose Yourself, etc. suddenly get cheaper?

Same. For example, I love listening to Lady Gaga's LoveGame instrumental, I don't like her voice in it and the lyrics annoy me. The instrumental is amazing though.

LoveGame has got quite a good instrumental, to be fair. I found it repetitive originally, but it's grown on me over the years.

It'd be very embarrassing if it didn't have a good isntrumental though, since Gaga says "This beat is sick" all the way through the song! A bit like in Boom Boom Pow, when Fergie's like "will.i.am, drop the beat now!!". It would've been SO embarrassing and cringe-worthy if it was boring after that bit.

Funnily enough, Boom Boom Pow's beat is fairly straight forward, then comes the bass

Listen to Boom Boom Pow's instrumental, it is quite empty for the first 2 minutes. I could do it with my hands

LoveGame's lyrics are annoying tbh, I only listen to the great instrumental

off topic - was listening to Price Tag on iTunes then when it finished Billionaire came on.. I lol'd.

Yeah, Boom Boom Pow is basically a bunch of synthesized percussion for the first 2 minutes. I actually have a MIDI file of the instrumental!

I agree somewhat about the more female popstars atm thing. I do think if there was a male Lady Gaga equivalent he'd be somewhat popular here, but I still doubt he'd reach the popularity of Dame Gaga. There's a blatant glass ceiling for male acts on this site and anyone who can't see that is a little bit blind, lol. Just check the results of probably any contest on this site.

By the way, it's interesting you mention the rap thing because Nicki Minaj IS actually more popular here than Kanye West or Jay-Z or whatever. Why, I do not know, as she is about maybe 10% as good as them. I've barely seen Kanye mentioned on here outside of a few people despite dropping a masterpiece at the end of 2010, while Nicki Minaj and her rather average effort got talked about a lot. Hmm.

Basically, what it comes down to is that males aren't necessarily disliked here but a female act simply has more mass appeal than males on this site. So a male has to collaborate with a female to attract the mass appeal. It's a bit like genres in the UK charts really  Other genres have to mix with pop to get decent placings usually, you know.

Jessie J - #16

Enrique - #60

#16 Jessie J

#60 Enrique Iglesias

#68 Yasmin

#187 Taio Cruz, Travie McCoy & Kylie Minogue

I personally think females(except Jessie J )are better singers than males. Female voices are just more suited to singing I think.

Except Jessie J? She's literally one of the best singers out there in the pop scene right now. With pop littered with artists that can't sing live, like Rihanna, Katy Perry, Ke$ha etc... you're going to say that Jessie J is a bad live singer? That makes literally no sense.
