Brought this up because a record 30 of last week's top 40 entries came from downloads alone. I reckon by 2013 we will see the first official top 40 made up of entirely downloads. It will be such an historic day if and when that happens.

CD physical single is dead, 75% of the singles chart is practically on downloads only now, its about time the singles chart should be called the Download or Tracks Chart

The first top 40 chart entirely on downloads will come sooner, you only have to look at the current chart. Last week I picked at least 25 tracks that are currently available on download only.

I would call it a sad day, rather than an historic one.

In any case, I don't think it's going to happen for quite a while yet - there are always dance tracks in the T40, and they tend to get physical releases, even if only on vinyl.

I don't think we'll actually see this for a long time. A lot of songs still have physicals.

To be honest, it's quite shocking how it's changed so quickly. At least for me. I mean, look at 10 years ago! :o

Even just five years ago every single one of the top 40 had a physical release. There was huge hype when Gnarls Barkley's 'Crazy' got to #1 on downloads alone, but it still got released on CD and still sold loads on that format. I don't think anyone will notice when we get our first download-only top 40, it'll just happen.

I've never been able to work out the first number 1 that never got a physical release. I've narrowed it down to June 2008 - Mint Royale's 'Singing In The Rain' didn't when it got to #1, but did back in 2005 when it was first released. And then the week after, Coldplay's 'Viva La Vida' had a physical release overseas but not here (I think they intended to but it was cancelled). So maybe one of those two? Last year there were loads...

It was definitely Viva La Vida.

If you're going to exclude VLV for its international physical release, the next one would be Leona - Run.

I think the physical is all but dead tbh- we've seen releases such as XF finalists and Charity singles do next to nothing on itunes, yet still get to number 1 officially

as long as there is charity and physical reliant acts, then physicals will stay

Which 30 of the top 40 were on downloads alone? Anyone got a list?

Here they are, a few will however eventually get a physical release.

01) Kesha - We R Who We R

02) Bruno Mars - Grenade

05) Chase & Status Ft Liam Bailey - Blind Faith

06) Jessie J - Do It Like A Dude

08) Britney Spears - Hold It Against Me

09) Rihanna Ft Drake - What's My Name

10) Chris Brown - Yeah 3x

12) Jls - Eyes Wide Shut

13) Martin Solveig & Dragonette - Hello

14) Tinchy Stryder / Melanie Fiona - Let It Rain

16) David Guetta Ft Rihanna - Who's That Chick

17) Taio Cruz - Higher

18) Ellie Goulding - Your Song

19) Bruno Mars - Just The Way You Are (Amazing)

20) The Black Eyed Peas - The Time (Dirty Bit)

21) Pink - F**kin' Perfect

22) Aggro Santos / Kimberley Walsh - Like U Like

23) Tinie Tempah Ft Kelly Rowland - Invincible

27) Katy Perry - Firework

28) Far East Movement ft Cataracs & Dev - Like A G6

30) Jodie Connor Ft Wiley - Now Or Never

31) Beady Eye - The Roller

32) Vaccines - Post Break-up Sex

33) Alexis Jordan - Happiness

35) The Wombats - Jump Into The Fog

40) Tinie Tempah Ft Ellie Goulding - Wonderman

That's interesting, most of the rock tracks lower down managed to go top 40 without a physical. I assumed Vaccines must have had at least a vinyl as they were top 20 in the first mids despite being about #26 on iTunes

It will have been likely other download sites.

02) Bruno Mars - Grenade

I thought Grenade had a physical single

There was a limited 7" which has now sold out

I am right in remembering that Viva La Vida was fairly widely available in the UK as a cover mount 7" on some music mags?

Going by ChartsPlus, I count 27 out of the 40 that were download-only.

13) Martin Solveig & Dragonette - Hello

31) Beady Eye - The Roller

32) Vaccines - Post Break-up Sex

Per C+

#13 has a 12" release, and #31 & #32 7" release.

I assume we're still yet to have the first all-download top 10?

The closest we ever got was a download top 9 (and the #11) on week 6 2010 AFAIA:

1 Owl City Fireflies

2 Jedward feat. Vanilla Ice Under Pressure (Ice Ice Baby)

3 Timbaland feat. Katy Perry If We Ever Meet Again

4 Glee Cast Don't Stop Believin'

5 Alicia Keys Empire State Of Mind (Part II) Broken Down

6 Iyaz Replay

7 3OH!3 feat. Katy Perry Starstrukk

8 JLS One Shot

9 Journey Don't Stop Believin' (obviously had a physical on its initial release though)

10 Example Won't Go Quietly

11 Ke$ha feat. 3OH!3 Blah Blah Blah
