Gavin Ryan's Chartifacts

(Thanks to Gavin Ryan)

Singles

In some peoples’ bedrooms, after a little dirty talk, some S&M might be on the menu. On the ARIA Singles Chart, it’s a natural progression, as "Dirty Talk" by Wynter Gordon is knocked off the top spot after three weeks by Rihanna's new single "S&M" which has jumped from 27-3-1. It also becomes her seventh No.1 single here in Australia (six solo, one duet with Eminem), which puts her on equal par for No.1 singles with Vera Lynn (1940’s), Eddie Fisher (1950’s) and Eminem (2000’s). This new No.1 also takes her tally of weeks at the top to 31, the same amount of weeks that Kylie Minogue has accumulated, but she did it with TEN No.1’s, this is only Rihanna’s seventh. RiRi now sits at No.17 on the ‘Accumulated Weeks at No.1’ leader board, and equal 15th of the list of ‘Acts with the Most No.1 Singles’.

“S&M” is the 976th No.1 single in Australia (1940 to 2011) and the sixth No.1 for the Def Jam label (all of them Rihanna songs). The last time we had a some letters at the top of the charts was from Rihanna, when she topped the chart with “SOS” in April 2006, before that it was Frankee’s “F.U. Right Back” (June 2004), and probably the best known lettered song is from December 1978, The Village People’s “Y.M.C.A.”

Rihanna's jump to the top pushes down last weeks Top 2, with Wynter's "Dirty Talk" down to No.2 and the other naughty-filled song near the top, Enrique's "Tonight (I'm Lovin'/F**kin' You)" down a place to No.3. Keeping all that sex in the Top 3 is the eventual outcome of a sexual partnership (hopefully); "Happiness", which is stable at No.4 for Alexis Jordan, and also holding steady this week is Katy Perry's "E.T.". at No.5.

With the announcement of his upcoming tour, Chris Brown's "Yeah 3x" is back up two places to No.6, which pushes last weeks number six; "Grenade" by Bruno Mars, down one place to No.7. Three weeks ago Avril Lavigne's "What the Hell" debuted at No.9, then last week it fell to No.14, this week it climbs up and scores a new peak of No.8. David Guetta and Rihanna's plus Guy Sebastian's girl-identity challenged songs are No.9 and No.10 respectively.

NEW PEAKS & MOVERS: Usher's “More” climbs three places more to a new peak of No.13, and Martin Solveig's "Hello" is up five places to a new height of No.14. Drapht's "Rapunzel" makes another upward move, this time it's up seven places to land in the Top 20 at No.16. Drapht was a Triple J Hottest 100 of 2010 Top 20 finalist, but the Top 2 songs from their countdown this year all move up the charts, as No.1 place-getter Angus & Julia Stone's "Big Jet Plane" jumps nine places to No.23 (two places shy of it's ARIA Awards peak of No.21). No.2 TrJ placement "Rock it" by Little Red is up sixteen places to No.25 (six places shy of its former No.19 peak). No.4 finalist was "Plans" by Birds of Tokyo which is up three places to No.40, but the other Triple J jumper is the No.5 song "Fall at Your Feet" by Boy & Bear, which is up eleven places to No.37 (three places away from former peak of No.34). Below is the updated list week I included last week so you can see how songs from the Top 40 are performing…

1 23 32 Big Jet Plane - Angus & Julia Stone

2 25 41 Rock it - Little Red

5 37 48 Fall at Your Feet - Boy & Bear

6 39 38 Teenage Crime - Adrian Lux

7 33 31 F**k You - Cee Lo Green

8 52 65 Tokyo (Vampires & Werewolves) - The Wombats

9 82 99 Magic Fountain - Art vs. Science

10 38 54 Somebody to Love Me - Mark Ronson feat Boy George

11 77 RE ABC News Theme (Remixed by Pendulum) - Peter Wall & Tony Ansell

12 16 23 Rapunzel - Drapht

13 64 71 Clap Your Hands - Sia

14 49 57 Runaway - Kanye West

34 56 58 Punching in a Dream - The Naked & Famous

38 30 39 Young Blood - The Naked & Famous

39 86 98 Revolution - John Butler Trio

The Far East Movement’s second single “Rocketeer”is doing just that, it’s up six places to No.24 this week. "All of the Lights" by Kanye West feat Rihanna climbs four places to a new peak of No.29, whilst his "Runaway" re-enters the Top 50 at No.49 (its original peak in November 2010). The Naked and Famous jump up nine places to No.30 with "Young Blood", and right behind them at No.31, up eighteen places, is Diddy - Dirty Money with "Coming Home". Lupe Fiasco's "The Show Goes On" leaps thirty-seven places to land inside the Top 50 at No.45, and right behind him, also leaping, but up thirty-one places, is "Seek Bromance" by Tim Berg.

The second single from The Black Eyed Peas' album "The Beginning" (TW-16) is the highest new entry of the week; "Just Can't Get Enough" which enters first week at No.19. The song has nothing to do with the 1982 similarly titled track by Depeche Mode, and is the groups eighteen charting single, and is one of two in the Top 20, as their former No.1 single "The Time (Dirty Bit)" is sitting at No.17 this week.

Below Top 50: Bliss N Eso are heading for another Top 50 hit as their latest "Reflections" moves up fourteen places to a new peak of No.53, whilst their other current track "Addicted" is back up seven places to land behind it at No.54. The other Naked & Famous track "Punching in a Dream" climbs two places to a new peak of No.56, and the last new peak of the week comes as a re-entry at No.90, "Not in Love" by The Crystal Castles feat. Robert Smith.

With the last two episodes of Glee Season 2.1 now being shown here in Australia (Regionals last Monday and the Xmas episode this coming Monday) before the second half of Season 2 commences in two weeks time, the songs used in this past weeks showing become the first two new Glee tracks for 2011. In 2010 they charted with 43 songs, more than any other act before, beating Michael Jacksons 38 entries in 2009. This week they enter at No.67 with "Dog Days are Over", whilst the original by Florence + The Machine re-enters at No.80. Their second entry of the week is in at No.81, "Hey, Soul Sister", adding help to the original by keeping it charting (in its 51st week) at No.68 (Trains current tour also helps).

Last week British rapper and singer Plan B charted with his album "The Defamation of Strickland Banks" (TW-36), and now the lead single from that album "She Said" enters at No.78, becoming his first chart hit here, helped also by his current appearance on the Big Day Out tour.

New single from his "5.0" album (TW-63) is "Gone" for Nelly, who is joined by Kelly Rowland, who in the past teamed up with Nelly on "Dilemma" (HP-1, Oct 2002), and this new single debuts at No.78.

Powderfinger are back in our charts at No.88 this week with the track "I'm On Your Side", and the last new entry of the week is from British singer/rapper Jessie J. (Jessica Ellen Cornish) who debuts at No.93 with her debut single "Do it Like a Dude", her debut album "Who You Are" is due out before April here.

Albums

Twelve weeks and running now for P!nk's "Greatest Hits... So Far", equaling the previous efforts achieved in the past by “Slade Alive!” by Slade (Sept 1972), “Hotel California” by The Eagles (Jan 1977) and the last twelve week runner was 2005’s “Back to Bedlam” by James Blunt which accumulated its twelve weeks from three runs at the top during August 2005, January 2006 and April 2006. P!nk now also moves up to No.17 in the list of acts with ‘Accumulated Weeks at No.1’, her tally now up to 23 weeks, one ahead of Eminem’s 22 weeks, and one week shy of the accumulated totals for Celine Dion, Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Rolling Stones.

The "Burlesque" Soundtrack moves up two places to No.2, our highest placed Movie soundtrack (this excludes Glee) since Twilight Saga: Eclipse hit No.2 in June 2010, and the first Top 10 soundtrack since “Step Up 3” (HP-10, Aug 2010). Last weeks No.3 debut for Adele's "21" stays put, and Bruno Mars' "Doo-Wops and Hooligans" moves back up one place to No.4, and helped by her albums second No.1 single, Rihanna's "Loud" is up two places to No.5 this week.

Bon Jovi's "Greatest Hits" drops to its lowest chart placing ever (#4 was its lowest previously in Dec 2010), down four places to No.6. Big Day Out tourists and Triple J Hottest 100 for 2011 winners Angus and Julia Stone see their "Down the Way" album climb up two places to No.8, and Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream" drops two places to hang onto the No.10 position this week.

US indie rock band Cold War Kids score the highest new entry of the week as their third album "Mine is Yours" debuts at No.9. Their second album, 2008's "Loyalty to Loyalty" (October 2008) reached No.20 in Australia, their first album “Robbers and Cowards” hit No.69 in it’s first week on the charts in February of 2007, but accumulated 17 weeks in the Top 100.

NEW PEAKS & MOVERS: Gypsy and the Cat are helped by their BDO appearances as their album "Gilgamesh" climbs again to a new peak, this week its up to No.14. Sia jumps seven places to land in the Top 20 at No.17, and with a pending tour and a newly repackaged edition of his "Crazy Love" album now the 'Hollywood' edition, Michael Buble sees his current set leaps forty-two places to land at No.22 this week.

Currently touring are Train whose curent album "Save Me, San Francsico" moves up again, this week it rises seven places to No.25, and Florence + The Machine see their repackaged edition of "Lungs" (now "Between Two Lungs") leap thirteen places to land at No.27 this week. Triple J Hottest 100 for 2011 has helped albums by Little Red (Midnight Remember) Mark Ronson (Record Collection) and Crystal Castles (Crystal Castles II) to move up the charts to No.37, No.38 and No.41 respectively.

INXS debut at No.44 with the download only "Live" set, their second live set to chart, the first being "Live Baby Live" (No.3, Nov 1991), and this new set coincides with their current national tour of Australia. Another tourist, more recent than current, is Sting, who sees his “Symphonicities” album climb to a new peak of No.36 this week.

Big Day Out tourists Die Antwoord (Africaan's for "The Answer") see thier debut album "$O$" enter at No.53 this week. Two Door Cinema Club see their re-packaged tour edition of “Tourist History” climb to a new peak of No.56, and another BDO tourist is Angus & Julia Stone see their new set "Memories of an Old Friend" enter at No.69.

S&M  Nice to see Wynter didn't drop too far, but sadly Australia seems to be the only country she's doing well in :( Pink STILL number 1 album :o :o :o :o :o She truly is a force over there, like 3 months at number 1 with a GH!!!
