Posted February 8, 201114 yr The Iron Lady tells the compelling story of Margaret Thatcher, a woman who smashed through the barriers of gender and class to be heard in a male-dominated world. The story concerns power and the price that is paid for power, and is a surprising and intimate portrait of an extraordinary and complex woman. Its being directed by Phyllida Lloyd who directed 'Mamma Mia!' and its written by Abi Morgan. Playing Thatcher is... http://cdn.buzznet.com/media/jj1/2011/02/meryl-margaret/meryl-streep-margaret-thatcher-01.jpg Meryl Streep Thoughts? Released later this year
February 8, 201114 yr Is this not a joke? Meryl Streep as Thatcher? (with an awful, potentially fake, publicity shot.) Directed by the woman who did Mamma Mia? Because that was all "intimate" and "complex"...

But whether or not the UK Film Council pushed the film through before the Conservative party shut them down was a joke or not is a different question.

It all seems too bizarre to me but fair enough.
February 9, 201114 yr Oh dear at some of you people. The fact that it is a film about somebody you don't like (for bandwagon purposes in James' sake or out of genuine disgust in Grimly's) does not mean that this couldn't be an excellent film. And let's face it, that photo instantly says that Meryl is going to be putting on yet another powerhouse performance. In one shot she has totally captured the slightly manic glint in Maggie's eyes. I smell awards.
February 9, 201114 yr I might see this purely for the fact that Meryl Streep is an out and out legend, and i am far from a fan of Thatch.
February 9, 201114 yr There was a BBC film recently about her attempts to get into Parliament in the 1950s. That film was actually rather good. It wasn't particularly pro- or anti-Th****er (I'd prefer not to have to type that name), it was more a fairly light-hearted portrayal of sexism in the 50s.

But you're right Jark, BANDWAGON ALL THE FUCKING WAY

If that was the one starring Andrea Riseborough then it was v v good.

Because that was all "intimate" and "complex"... Mammia Mia was AWFUL. :puke2: I've never been as unfortunate as when I had to suffer through watching that with my mum. Superficial nonsense that didn't go anywhere. :puke2: As for this movie, I don't really know a whole lot of Margaret Thatcher, I wasn't around when she was in power. (or at least I was too young to remember) Might be an interesting watch though... Edited February 9, 201114 yr by Sabrewulf

February 9, 201114 yr From what I've read it doesn't. Although it's not going to be GOD she was AWFUL either. But it's not meant to be a positive rose-tinted portrayal by any means.

I smell awards. It wasn't so much disgust at the fact that there was a film about Thatch being made, rather it was more that they've put it into the hands of a director responsible for absolute shallow, brainless, trite rubbish like "Mamma Mia"... As much as I hate Thatch, a biopic about her should be made by someone with a bit of pedigree for this sort of film-making..... Neil Jordan, Ken Loach, Michael Winterbottom, Paul Greengrass....
February 9, 201114 yr true stuff, Hitler is alot worse than Thatcher and 'Downhill' is a completly brilliant film. and tbh who says this film shows Thatcher in a good light anyway? I think you mean Downfall which is indeed an excellent film.
February 9, 201114 yr I think you mean Downfall which is indeed an excellent film. yes, no idea why i said hill.
February 9, 201114 yr Meryl Streep?! I thought that was Glen Close!!! Glen was excellent playing Cruella de Vil so why not cast her instead - there are so many similarities with both characters.
February 11, 201114 yr I think you mean Downfall which is indeed an excellent film. Yeah, "Downfall" is a great piece of cinema for sure and Bruno Ganz's portrayal of Hitler is frankly superb, the thing is though, at least Downfall was made by a director who hadn't done cheesy musicals (before this he'd done the rather superb "Das Experiment")...
