Not keen of horrors but Scream really is very good at creating suspense and frights.

Even though i have seen them many times, i still get scared and jumpy. The beginning of the first film with Drew Barrymore is so scarey that

I still hide behind a pillow

I went to see The Strangers in the cinema, the masks that the psyco's wore really fraked me out :(

The Exorcist.

Jeepers Creepers.

The Silence of The Lambs.

Cannibal Holocaust (disturbing beyond belief).

Cannibal Holocaust is brilliant and hugely groundbreaking and confrontational. So convincing that the director was arrested and taken to court on murder charges. He had to bring the cast out of hiding to prove his innocence.

Blair Witch, The Last Broadcast and the whole 'lost footage/shaky cam' genre owe everything to it

Scariest film should not necessarily mean jumpy bits, bloodshed and gruesome deaths. In terms of truly unsettling experiences I'd go for The Ring (even the remake) and Hard Candy - the latter really makes me squirm.

Yeah, I wouldn't really consider a movie that can make me jump a scary one. It's pretty easy to make someone jump with something sudden....so it's not really a legitimate kind of scared.

I'd be more scared by something that actually made me think and made me sleepless afterwards thinking about it. Not something with cheap shock thrills I've forgotten about when the movie is over.

I don't usually get scared by horror movies, so I might check some of these out.

As the great Alfred Hitchcock once said 'There is no terror in the bang, only in the anticipation of it.'

Too many film makers forget that and yet it's so obvious

[rec] for sure!

also a film called elephant. it's not scary in the traditional sense of blood, guts and making you jump but it's cos it's about a school shooting and just so realistic and eerie. i couldnt ever watch it again cos it's scarred me for life but definitely recommend it :P it's really powerful..

[REC] is the only film that has put me into genuine terror. And yes, in terms of actual emotion, Elephant was eerie enough to actually scare me, it's just the sheer emptiness and the banality of high school life: the dialogue, the distant audio, the long tracking shots, the repeated scenes, the camerawork. And then a massacre suddenly develops, and their lives are ended so bluntly and callously. Haunting.

Good that someone mentioned The Strangers... I'd forgotten that - definitely one of the best horrors of recent years.

If you haven't already seen it, you should check out the French horror film Ils (Them) that The Strangers was based on. Much more gritty, the closing shot of the movie is especially chilling.

Hills Have Eyes ... seriously one of the recent horror films to actually properly scare me. That scene when everything kicks off is just terrifying, really shook me up.

Elephant  I vaguely remember catching some parts of it on TV or something before. Looks so good, need to watch that in full.

Not a fan of horror movies now though. And never really was. I can only boats that i saw all the Elm Streem movies, Hills Have Eyes, Final Destination and a couple of others. As i said, not a fan.

Halloween and Nightmare on Elm Street are pretty scary, especially the latter, for a while, it made me a bit wary of going downstairs in the dark

Not really as film as such but Threads scared the $h!t out of me when I watched it. I can't imagine how scary it would have been in the 80s when it could have genuinely happened

I've never been particularly fond of horror films. I don't understand the appeal most of the time, it's just uncomfortable viewing (probably the reason why people like them so much) with severely lacklustre stories. The more recent ones at least. The Strangers wasn't too bad but the ending was disappointing, they could have done much more with it (anyone who uses Joanna Newsom on their soundtrack deserves some recognition however).

I watched Alien as a child and was so horrified that I haven't watched it again, haha. Irrational, maybe. Cannibal Holocaust is probably the most disturbing film I've ever seen. Killing animals for the sake of a film isn't something to be admired.

I found the David Cronenberg remake of The Fly to be really scary. It was the first scary film that I had to change channels because it was too much for me.

The scene where Geena Davis girls birth to a larva, Seth Brundle's ear falling off and Brundlefly melting the doctor's limbs off

gave me nightmares for weeks. I was 15 at the time. I watched the ending for the first time a few months ago, and it still has quite a few shocks in it.

I thought Exorcist III was beyond scary v sick film even worse than the first one

Films I found scary but like:

Paranormal Activity

Blair Witch Project

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Original)

Films that are disturbingly sick imo:

Wolf Creek

Hills Have Eyes

I found Paranormal Activity 1 + 2 terrifying!

The first one in particular messed with my head so much. I didn't sleep properly for a few days and even had my light on!

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake. I think I was about 14 or 15 and all my girlies watched it around a friends house who lived in the middle of nowhere with trees and woods around. I shat myself and was so scared I couldnt sleep all night :(
Another horrible film is "The Strangers" I found it quite disturbing, I found out later that the director was inspired by the Sharon Tate murders.
