February 17, 201114 yr I ♥ Ladytron. Shall definitely be getting the 2 disc version as I need a HQ version of The Way That I Found You.
February 17, 201114 yr I might check this out, have an album or two and like them lots but rarely listen to them, a retrospective of them should be nice.
February 17, 201114 yr I like Ladytron a lot. It's my first time listening to that new song and I like it. I don't know if I'll ever get the best of as I have all the songs from all 4 studio albums, but if the 2 new songs on the best of aren't on their 5th studio album, then maybe I'll get the best of. I would like to get my hands on the 5th studio album for sure :)
February 17, 201114 yr I still wish they'd have released 'I'm Not Scared', and it could have a place on this as it's my favourite song of theirs. Pah!
February 18, 201114 yr Author NME blog posted a few days ago a great article: ''Have We Overlooked the Brilliance of Ladytron?'' Normally, best-ofs are an indulgence I forswear. Why snugly revisit old ground when you could spend that hour listening to something new? Sometimes, though, they do serve a purpose; gathering a band’s flashes of genius into one solid beam can serve to focus your attention on the kind of middle-ranking acts that would normally be overlooked for flashier or gobbier peers. And such an epiphany-inducing beast is the new Ladytron selected works. As the black and glossy night-pulses of 'Playgirl’ and 'Deep Blue’ caress the office stereo like the kinky little minxes they are, it’s a revelation how much this band have actually meant to us. Brilliant as 'Light And Magic’ and 'Witching Hour’ were, there was always something more pressing, someone shouting a bit louder. Perhaps as well, they were just a little bit too haughty, too perfect-haired and eyelinered to love. Compared with the sexpopglam exuberance of sometime bassist Pop Levi or the band who gifted them their name, Roxy Music, Ladytron’s sonic world is a chilly and unforgiving one. Or at least it seemed that way at the time. Though the likes of 'Cracked LCD’, with Mira Aroyo’s choked and clipped Eastern European intonations, and the blue morning comedown of 'International Dateline’ can still shiver us, the strongest impression here is how chart-ready these songs sound. As pop, under the influence of producers like Red One and dark ladies like Rihanna and Gaga has grown harder and colder, Ladytron’s tunes in retrospect seem less aloof and out-of-sync and more like great lost bangers. Take the relentless T-X of a song that is 'Destroy Everything You Touch’ with its great hovering-death-star intro and 'OUT OF MY WAY MORTALS’ chorus, Helen Marnie pitiless and purring as she swears perdition on those who stand in her way. Or the compulsively creepy 'Seventeen’, the throbbing 'Runaway'. It’s no wonder Aguilera sought out their sleek android charms for her last album 'Bionic’. Truth be told, she doesn’t even deserve them, and Ladytron sound more like the tomorrow’s world than Ms Burlesque likely ever will again. Now, if you need me, I’ll be in the corner at the future-disco, impassively picking specks of dust from my immaculate black trousers and calibrating my robotic death-ray eyeballs. February 18, 201114 yr The Tiesto mix of 'Ace of Hz' is OUT OF THIS WORLD GOOD. I care for this band so much, I am not sure why as I listen to them on and off, they come and they go, studio album to studio album but when I come back to them I'm simply in love with every aspect of them; visuals, aesthetics, tones, structures, styles. Magnificent.
February 18, 201114 yr I still wish they'd have released 'I'm Not Scared', and it could have a place on this as it's my favourite song of theirs. Pah! Yeah, that song sounds awesome.
March 2, 201114 yr Why have they got Tiesto in remixing them? Also, don't really like the way they're being talked up now as Godparents to the current cheesy-electro-pop scene when they're clearly not. It's a good compilation though, just annoying that it's being aggressively marketed as some kind of well-kept secret when the truth is that people were just into really $h!t music when they were around first of all. 'Discotraxx' remains as lovely as the first time I heard it a over a decade ago.
March 2, 201114 yr Author Why have they got Tiesto in remixing them? Because Tiesto is very popular. No one will listen to a very good remix but done by an obscure remixer. By the way, I like the original "Ace of Hz" much more than any remix. Also, don't really like the way they're being talked up now as Godparents to the current cheesy-electro-pop scene when they're clearly not.Whoever said that clearly doesn't know (almost) anything about electronic music. Their previous record labels did a bad job promoting their music (how on Earth is possible that a super-catchy song like Destroy Everything You Touch to miss Top 40? Just 2 singles from Witching Hour, one of the best albums of the decade?). Ladytron are on the edge between mainstream and underground. They don't have radio hits but they're quite popular on the internet (e.g. see their last.fm page). Edited March 2, 201114 yr by alin
March 2, 201114 yr I know Tiesto is very popular, he is also really poor and Ladytron should be above getting him in. As for their previous labels doing a bad job: 'Destroy Everything You Touch' was out on Island, it was their only time on a really big label. That type of music just wasn't in at the time, the scene was being set for lightweight indie rock from the likes of Razorlight and The Kooks. DEYT was pushed more than any other Ladytron single but the radio stations and, more importantly, the kids weren't biting.
March 3, 201114 yr I agree that Ladytron were under-marketed, especially over the last 2 albums. But I disagree that Tiesto is 'poor' - yes, his 'cheesy trancey' vocal-led output in the 2000s was abysmal - but his music prior to that, and the recent stuff - a completely different kettle of fish..... nothing at all like his commercial stuff. Plus he's a name that will prick up the ears of the DJs and the clubbers, which for a band like Ladytron is vital.
March 3, 201114 yr It depends, if I were Ladytron then I could really do without appealling to Tiesto's audience. Can't say I agree that his recent stuff is actually good.
March 3, 201114 yr I think his output this last year has been pretty excellent - including some full-on remixes..... and Ladytron have always bee the under-achievers in the 'electro' category, which is something I'm baffled about. I'd say any support they can get is crucial to tem. OK, they're absolutely toe-curlingly appalling live (one of the worst live bands I've ever seen, I'd say), but their recorded output is never less than superb.
March 3, 201114 yr Author OK, they're absolutely toe-curlingly appalling live (one of the worst live bands I've ever seen, I'd say), but their recorded output is never less than superb. That was too harsh, don't you think? <_< Maybe the venue' sound quality was bad or the sound engineer was a noob (usually the bass too loud, vocals too low). Their early shows were too static (quite boring) but since then, they improved their live show. Check this live performance at KCRW Radio (in 2009): http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=A0E88B3328C27A3B I think Ladytron's live sound is really good now.
March 3, 201114 yr That 2009 performance is good, you're right - I've seen the band live three times over the years, and I have to be honest, each time, they were beyond terrible.... I kept going in the vain hope they'd finally manage to cut it live..... but I never witnessed it - the main problem being the dire vocals and complete lack of any presence or connection with their audience.
