Seen a bit of talking about the subject in hand in the predictions thread, I think it deserves a topic of its own to discuss in general, it should make an interesting topic/reading.

Definitely yes! Video will increase media attention (TV and radio airplay) to the song and will expose it to bigger audience which probably didn't hear the song! Plus visualize a song gives sometimes a new touch or emphasis to the meaning! And if the video cause a huge controversy (aka Lady GaGa's videos, S&M etc.) then it gets more coverage from all types of media!
I don't think videos can really not help the position, but the amount of effect they have is a good question. Maybe it depends on whether it has radio support as well ('Like U Like' & 'On A Mission' as two examples of songs that weren't play-listed but had good video airplay?), how good the actual video is etc.

Well, of course they do!

it gets the artist more exposure, and more chance of airplay on a lot of video channels- anyone saying Lady Gaga isn't living up to expectations is clearly wrong, once it gets a video, it will most likely go back to number 1

about how much effect they have depends on how much hype is around it- in Gaga's case, her videos are very popular and controversial and usually a pivotal point for her

Yes. There are listeners that don't really listen to radio, just in TV. And listeners that are more excited at the song, because they watched a video of it. Both should help chart positions.
Of course it does, being played on the music channels and stuff is KEY in a single's promotional campaign. A big blockbuster video can bolster a single's chart performance but by large they at least need a video.
http://railuk.forumup.co.uk/images/smiles/mistick_yes.gif its one of the main ways to promote a single..

Videos definitely help and even make someone's career. More than her amazing songs, the iconic videos put Madonna in that untouchable place.

we will be able to tell this week or next because britney's video has finnally been released

Or we can look back in the past at the hundreds of examples where songs have climbed the charts due to their video release.

Telephone would never have been a #1 without the hype of the video release.

the britney spears chart run in the next few weeks will show how videos affect the chart.

but the question must be asked surely that means acts like rihanna, britney, ladgy gaga, justin timbersnake and bruno mars have a better chance of doing well in the charts and hence selling and being aired more??

indie acts only get played on maybe 2 mainstream mtv channels - Q and mtv rocks but pop songs by lagy gaga for example are played on mtv base, hits, vh1,dance, the box,4 music?!!

Both the mainstream music channels I get play what's in the charts. If an indie song does well in the charts, they'll play it. If a pop song doesn't do well in the charts, they'll barely play it. If the chart was 90% indie songs, those stations would play 90% indie songs.

There's an obvious bias towards certain kind of acts, though. For example, Chris Brown is currently sitting at #2 on the TV airplay chart, yet Adele is all the way down at #19 and I believe that is her peak so far (or at least I certainly know it hasn't got much higher than that, as I check the chart every week). Why is Chris Brown getting so much more play over an act that is far more successful than him at the moment, chart-wise? It's a bias of genre, simple as that.

But you're right, somewhat, but it depends on the music channel. The Box has always been biased towards pop, dance, R&B and didn't give alternative stuff THAT much attention even when it was somewhat successful between 2004-2006. Acts like Arctic Monkeys never got as much rotation there as the likes of Pussycat Dolls, Black Eyed Peas etc. despite being just as successful chart-wise. But there were other channels back then like B4 (which doesn't exist anymore, I believe) and they were much more varied with the music they played. Chart Show TV never used to be so bad for that, either, not sure what it's like now as I never watch music channels anymore, but it used to be my favourite around 2003.

They'll play an "indie" song if it gets to #1, yes, but they wouldn't play it anywhere near as much as they would an R&B or pop #1 single, basically.
