Posted March 5, 201114 yr Are there any Johnny Cash fans on here? I've always been aware of his music and obviously know the classics like 'I Walk the Line', 'Ring of Fire' etc. but I've only recently started looking into some of his other material (after hearing the wonderful 'God's Gonna Cut You Down' on the True Grit trailer). The thing is, he's released so many albums I don't really know where to start! If there are any fans on here, which albums would you suggest I look into? I've downloaded 'American IV: The Man Comes Around' and 'American V: A Hundred Highways' so far.
March 5, 201114 yr i'd say start with a best of, then go into Live at Folsom Prison, then The Man Comes Around. infact i'd go these releases in order: Ring of Fire: The Legend Of Johnny Cash Live at Folsom Prison Amercian IV: The Man Comes Around then i'd say if theres anything specific on The Legend of Johnny Cash you enjoyed, go on to find more music of that era. also for bonus, heres a few more fav Cash releases of mine: Ride This Train Walking The Line: The Legendary Sun Recordings Live at San Quentin and just cos i'm me, this is my favourite thing he has ever done and gives me tears Hurt (cover of Nine Inch Nails) o22eIJDtKho Johnny Cash
March 5, 201114 yr OMG I LOVE THAT SONG 'HURT' BY JOHNNY CASH, CAN'T BELIEVE NINE INCH NAILS COVERED IT.

March 5, 201114 yr Maybe this would be better off in the retro forum as you'd probably get a better response than a Nine Inch Nails bitch fest (which WILL stop now!) That said Chris posted a great initial response to which I would add that any of his Sun Records sessions or American Recordings albums are worth listening to. And Hurt is one of the few times where a cover outshines the original (and I do like NIN's original as well)
March 6, 201114 yr shut up joshua. trent reznor won an oscar last week have some respect. does not compute. There must be something wrong with your computer.
March 6, 201114 yr I've only recently started to listen to him. I started with 'American III : Solitary Man'. I love his voice.
March 6, 201114 yr Not gonna lie, but it was the film 'Walk The Line' which got me listening to Johnny  (Have to start somewhere, right?). Although I have only heard a handful of his tracks so far (even though I bought his 'Legend of Johnny Cash' greatest hits album...) His cover of 'Hurt' is exceptional. It's so raw and powerful. Didn't he record it, like weeks before his death or something? But yes. From what I've heard, it's easy to see why he is as respected as he is as a musician.

I think Hurt was recorded just after Rose died, and just before he died, the amount of emotion in that one recording is amazing, he really made the song his own. Anyone who can watch the video to 'Hurt' and not cry has no soul. infact Trent Reznor's response to it: "I pop the video in, and wow… Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps… Wow. [i felt like] I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn't mine anymore… It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form. I wrote some words and music in my bedroom as a way of staying sane, about a bleak and desperate place I was in, totally isolated and alone. [somehow] that winds up reinterpreted by a music legend from a radically different era/genre and still retains sincerity and meaning — different, but every bit as pure."
March 6, 201114 yr Got into Johnny Cash largely because I was fortunate enough to see him live at Glastonbry in the mid 90s. I only wanted to hear Ring Of Fire, A Boy Named Sue and I Walk The Line but he was brilliant. He was also one of the very few artists to appeal to the masses despite his largely Country styled output. He somehow transcended genres. Hurt was recorded just a year before June's death and whilst he himself was in poor health. Originally the B-side to Personal Jesus. The minor lyrical changes made it all the more poignant. As far as I'm aware Roseanne is still very much alive and well. His version is indeed one of the most obvious examples of an artist taking someone else's song and making it their own. I don't think it's stretching it to say Trent probably agrees
