BS was beaten by the first week of Puff Daddy :arrr:

so it was essentially also overlooked by a death at the time :o shame it probably would've got there if it weren't for B.I.G's death :( although thats a classic too imo :D

Indeed this is true. At least 'Bittersweet Symphony' helped kick those dreadful Hanson brothers further away from #1.

Then again, I was gobsmacked when 'I'll Be Missing You' did go to #1 (I didn't really follow the news to know about the death of Notorious B.I.G. at the time). A bit like when 'Killing Me Softly' by The Fugees went straight to #1 in 1996 - didn't see either of those happening, yet both eventually became tracks I liked.

Neither did Woolies - I remember them thinking that the Verve would be #1 and they had Puff at #6!

Elton John blocked some great songs off the #1 spot too :(

too true, Dario G- Sunchyme being the main injustice

Personally, I regard 'Ecuador' as Sash!'s best single closely followed by 'Mysterious Times' and 'Encore Une Fois'. I never got the big deal with 'Stay'.

It's all about Stay and Mysterious Times for me!

Though I do love Ecuador! and Encore Une Fois

Stay is my favorite Sash track from the 90s along with Move Mania :D My least favourite is easily Encore Une Fois, overrated to the extreme

Sunchyme was the biggest injustice though, since it spent 2 weeks behind Elton

Non-consecutive too, making it all the more of an injustice!

 Stand By Me is my all time favorite song! Both are

Songs to spend 2 weeks or more at #2 in 1997:

No Mercy - Where Do You Go

Sash! - Ecuador

Andrea Bocelli & Sarah Brightman - Time To Say Goodbye

Chumbawamba - Tubthumping

Dario G - Sunchyme

Natalie Imbruglia - Torn

Elton stopping Sunchyme from #1 is among the worst chart injustices ever. (All of which seem to involve dance songs being held off by $h!te songs)

The Prodigy's only #2 peaker, Everybody In The Place, was held off by the re-release of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody - I don't count that as an injustice though as Bohemian Rhapsody is among the best songs ever.

Oh, and talking of injustice, Chumbawamba's Tubthumping was kept off #1 by Men In Black - FOR 3 WEEKS! -_-

A great year for music.

Nothing has ever, or will ever, top Robson and Jerome preventing 'Common People'.

Simply Red preventing Sorted for E's and Wizz?

^that same duo beating Wonderwall comes pretty close :(

wow, Torn, Tubthumping, Sunchyme and Bittersweet Symphony- this was quite a year for classic number 2s :o
