Simply Red preventing Sorted for E's and Wizz?

What Simply Red song? Either way they're better than R&J and as good as 'Sorted For...' is, it's no 'Common People'.

^that same duo beating Wonderwall comes pretty close :(

wow, Torn, Tubthumping, Sunchyme and Bittersweet Symphony- this was quite a year for classic number 2s :o

Indeed. Though in Europe the other big #2 hits: Where Do You Go and Time To Say Goodbye were the bigger hits in late 1996 and are more remembered til this day

'Lovefool', 'Richard III', 'Freed From Desire', 'Stay', Stand By Me', 'Hush' (:kink:) all made it too. The amount of fantastic number two records that are still so fondly remembered now from 1997 is quite incredible really!

Oh, and talking of injustice, Chumbawamba's Tubthumping was kept off #1 by Men In Black - FOR 3 WEEKS! -_-

As much as I like MIB, Tubthumping really deserved number one. Both could of had 2 weeks at the top spot. I will always hate SATWYLT/CITW for blocking off Sunchyme

So many good number 2s in the 1990s, I still haven't decided what's coming after this (90s number 2s or 00s number 1s)

RESULTS UPDATE >>> It is close at the top between No Doubt & The Verve, but who will win? Other songs looking likely to qualify come from The Spice Girls, Puff Daddy, Olive and more. LL Cool J is the current loser and only song on minus points

1997 in general was an excellent year for singles and albums. At one point (around 2003), it seemed like the majority of my music collection was from 1997 - I was also quite obsessed with quite a few compilation albums from 1997. Again, purely down to the decent tracklists for many of those albums.

How can people rank a song in a poll when they admit they've never heard it? It wouldn't be so bad if they said they didn't know the song but at least made an effort to give it a listen (Youtube, Spotify etc..) as opposed to- I'll vote it on the basis of how much I like the title or on the basis of that particular acts previous releases! We might as well be putting them in a hat and drawing them out at random!

Come on guys, make the effort. If you've never heard the song, give it a listen then at least, if you think it's s**t, you've given an informed view of it. Rant over.

It should be 90s #2s and then 90s #3s :kink: I won't settle for only #2s when I think the #3s of the 1990s are just as amazing.

Puff Daddy is going to qualify?! Oh jesus. This is truly sickening. What would Biggie think of this?! :(

And yeah, 1997 is my favourite year ever for chart music :D And yes, it was a fabulous year for #2s. Quite a few well-remembered #3 hits, too - Paranoid Android, Say What You Want, You Got The Love, C U When U Get There, Everybody, Honey, As Long As You Love Me...

Fairground. I agree Common People is alot better than Sorted....!

It also had some amazing #4s

It also had some amazing #4s

What were the #4s?

It was pretty good for every position clearly :D I think it was one of the last years of true variety to be honest.

Maybe a #2s of 90s and 00s should be next then?

That would be good.

Also, as ThisisPop is no longer around to run his record of the decade competition, I was thinking of doing the same format for the number ones like I did last year, doing it every year on a rolling 10 year period. However that won't be done until I finish my degree...

15|White Town ‘Your Woman’

12|Blur ‘Beetlebum’

10|Tori Amos ‘Professional Widow (It’s Got To Be Big)’

08|The Chemical Brothers ‘Block Rockin’ Beats’

06|The Verve ‘The Drugs Don’t Work’

05|Olive ‘You’re Not Alone’

04|Oasis ‘D’You Know What I Mean?’

03|No Doubt ‘Don’t Speak’

02|U2 ‘Discotheque’

01|Eternal feat. BeBe Winans ‘I Wanna Be The Only One’

-02|R Kelly ‘I Believe I Can Fly’

And so on, #3s, #4s..., it would be interesting

The only problem with that is things would get more and more unknown the further you moved down. Some people struggled to come up with 10 songs they knew even with the #1s, and those are generally more well known songs than the #2s, #3s, #4s etc.

Also, it would take a long time, so maybe two different people can run the 90s and 00s one at the same time? I don't think that would be too confusing...
