Posted April 1, 201114 yr Wanted to know how much power Radio 1 have to determine whether a song will be successful or popular? It seems that in recent times, if a song doesn't get on their playlist or decent airplay then the song never charts well. Because they get so many listeners. Any songs recently, that have gone against this?
April 1, 201114 yr <cough>X-Factor<cough> :P Yes, they do *eventually* get airplay there, but they don't need it to be #1...
April 1, 201114 yr Author <cough>X-Factor<cough> :P Yes, they do *eventually* get airplay there, but they don't need it to be #1... So if a song is getting good airplay on other Radio stations, then Radio 1 give it airplay too?
April 1, 201114 yr I dont think The Wanted were playlisted for their debut track. Arctic Monkeys maybe?
April 1, 201114 yr It certainly used to be the case historically. I recall Ocianic's "Insanity" in 91 and also "i like to move it" by real 2 real as well were not uspported by radio one who only used to play them on teh chart run down. I remember the real 2 reel chart run according to the network chart or whatever it was called back then being particularly helpful in it's insight. As the top 10 was based on sales alone while numbers 11 and below had airplay factored in the record had an initial run of 9-10-12-12-10-9 on the official charts whilst the network charts had a run of 9-10-30-38-10-9 showing how little airplay it had. Not specifically regarding radio one support i know- but an instance where a record didn't rely on it to return to the top 10 Edited April 1, 201114 yr by gezza76
April 1, 201114 yr Iron Maiden's "Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter" is the first case I know that reached #1 in the UK chart and was never put on the Radio 1 playlist although they played it in the countdown and probably in the specialist rock show they had at the time, that played some heavy metal, but they felt the general listening audience would not take to it very well.
April 1, 201114 yr Las Ketchup's "Asereje (The Ketchup Song)" definitely wasn't. At the time, it had the lowest airplay chart position for a #1 if I recall well.
April 1, 201114 yr Olly Murs - Please Don't Let Me Go That was C-Listed after release. The only recent ones I can think of have both been mentioned (The Wanted and Alexandra Burke - SWY) Bizarrely R1 have A-Listed everything The Wanted have released since ATL...
April 1, 201114 yr Arctic Monkeys got huge support from Radio 1. absolutely sure they didnt playlist: Las Ketchup, Shakira - Hips, Blu Cantrell - Breathe, Bob The Builder - Can We Fix It & Mambo Nº5, Frankee - FURB, Crazy Frog, and a buch of Westlife and "reality star" songs. very likely they didnt: DJ Otzi - Hey Baby, Vengaboys - Ibiza, Aqua - Doctor Jones, The list of #2s and #3 are way higher, obviously. Basshunter - Now You're Gone got to #1 without their support, they playlisted it after it became a hit.
April 1, 201114 yr I don't think they've playlisted any novelty songs or anything associated with X factor unless the contestant is releasing their first genuine release- and even then, their a little bit sceptical, I don't think any of Alexandra's songs, only playlisted Olly after he got popular and snubbed Diana after it was clear she wasn't as popular as they first thought, I think they have playlisted all of JLS and Leona's output, then again, they are probably the most successful XF contestants

Seems to be the Pitbull curse, R1 (the chart show at least) seem to hate Pitbull. They seemed very reluctant to playlist HRS, they ignored Shut It Down and Hey Baby entirely and the chart show always played non-Pitbull versions of I Like It and DJ Got Us Fallin' In Love (All Night Long as well? And I'm pretty sure they played the no-Pitbull version of Now I'm That Bitch the one week that was in the chart also), wouldn't be surprised if they started playing the JLo-only version of On The Floor on the chart show :P Edited April 1, 201114 yr by Bray
April 1, 201114 yr David Guetta's Sexy Chick got to number 1 without any radio and TV airplay then Radio 1 started playlisting it.
April 1, 201114 yr I never understood why they didn't playlist Hips Don't Lie, even after five weeks at number one.
April 1, 201114 yr David Guetta's Sexy Chick got to number 1 without any radio and TV airplay then Radio 1 started playlisting it. IIRC that was just because it was an instant release song (ie. not held back, hence the video coming out so long after it got to #1). I was very surprised it managed to get to #1 so quickly. April 1, 201114 yr I seem to remember Groovejet (If This Ain't Love) not being playlisted until after it got to number 1?
