April 9, 201114 yr ^ Indeed. To be honest, there aren't really any big worldwide pop girl groups anyway (or none that I can think of anyway, I bet there's something obvious ). There was the Pussycat Dolls, but we all know how that has panned out. :( Infact, will there EVER be any that can match their success? I don't think it's possible really. These days, whenever an artist gets insanely popular like Spice Girls used to be, they just end up getting really hated.
April 9, 201114 yr Lady Gaga's Born This Way must rank pretty high as well. It has officially been No. 1 in 16 main markets. Dunno about other smaller ones. Did PokerFace have more :???:
April 9, 201114 yr Did PokerFace have more :???: I'd suspect so. I recall reading somewhere that Bad Romance got #1 in over 20 countries too.

These days, whenever an artist gets insanely popular like Spice Girls used to be, they just end up getting really hated. You think the Spice Girls never got hatred?! They got loads of the stuff. The most common was that they couldn't sing. Fair enough, they weren't brilliant vocalists, and indeed most of them (particularly Geri) had to have a lot of voice training, but to say they couldn't sing is a little ridiculous. The other was that they were manufactured, especially compared to the "pure" Britpop bands they had arguably helped to kick out. Again, fair enough in a way, they were, but they still had more magic and chemistry than most groups that had been together for years and years. That's why they were so successful, really. And whilst they were manufactured they still had more input than a lot of people gave them credit for at the time. Anyway, I'm starting to sound like a huge Spice Girls apologist here  But the point is they got a lot of hatred chucked their way, so nothing was different than it is to now. In fact, the stigma of being a "former Spice Girl" is probably a big reason why none of them managed to last as solo acts. And to be honest, I'd argue that Lady Gaga's first two years were just as successful, if not more successful, than the Spice Girls, overall. Spice Girls were bigger in the UK, but they only had one huge hit in most other countries, including America, for one. EDIT: Or were you talking about girl bands?! In which case, you're probably right, at least for the forseeable future. I think it depends though - a big girl band is probably only going to come from America now though. It's not impossible. Your joking right ? they were massive wordwide. 53 million albums sold worldwide. God knows how many singles which were top 10 in pretty much every single country.

April 10, 201114 yr Your joking right ? they were massive wordwide. 53 million albums sold worldwide. God knows how many singles which were top 10 in pretty much every single country. You completely missed the point. I know perfectly well they were successful worldwide, but Wannabe was BY FAR their biggest hit, while Lady Gaga has had at least three songs that have all been as big as each other. Spice Girls never even got to #1 again in most of the major markets after Wannabe, therefore only one HUGE worldwide hit, IMO.
April 10, 201114 yr Lady Gaga's Born This Way must rank pretty high as well. It has officially been No. 1 in 16 main markets. Dunno about other smaller ones. Born This Way #1 in 19 countries! PF and BR are in the 20s
April 10, 201114 yr Author They had 4 top 10 hits in the USA. pretty good for a British band, I can't think of many UK artists that can achieve this, never mind other bands :D
April 10, 201114 yr All these claims for "Number One in so many countries" appear to be without substantiation, or even in most cases a list of the countries concerned.
April 10, 201114 yr All these claims for "Number One in so many countries" appear to be without substantiation, or even in most cases a list of the countries concerned. Indeed, and it is quite dubious. Like most times its a vague stat they give, like "number-one in over X countries", rather than a specific figure. To be fair though, there's lots of countries which don't have an official chart. It's more difficult to say what's number-one there, if that makes sense.
April 10, 201114 yr Author To be fair though, there's lots of countries which don't have an official chart. It's more difficult to say what's number-one there, if that makes sense. You mean what was the most bought song of the week?
April 10, 201114 yr You mean what was the most bought song of the week? Sorry, no. The official chart in the US, for example, is not a list of the best-selling songs of the week. That chart incorporates airplay into it. There's other charts in other countries which exclude certain formats. The official chart in France didn't include downloads until recently, for example. In the UK, out official charts is the one compiled by the OCC. In some other countries, they have different companies compiling different charts (think, like the Big Top 40 Show in the UK), and using different methods to do so, yet they don't have one labelled as "official", like we have in the UK.
June 1, 201312 yr It was claimed on The Late Late Show on RTE television last night by Nile Rogers that Daft Punk's Get Lucky has been number 1 in 97 countries. Is there any truth in this? / - I know that sounds insane but that IS what he said. Edited June 1, 201312 yr by AnthonyT
June 1, 201312 yr It was #1 on 56 different iTunes charts according to this. Not quite 97. (Although there are only 96 on there by my count so it would be impossible to get 97. I'm not sure if that's a 100% extensive list of iTunes stores that sell music though). Edited June 1, 201312 yr by Bré
June 1, 201312 yr My issue with this whole "#1 in **number** countries" is that it's not actually official. At this years Brit Awards, James Corden told One Direction that 'OWOA' was #1 in something like 36 countries which was nonsense. Going to #1 on iTunes doesn't mean you're officially #1 in that country for the week. However, 'Get Lucky' has been a far more successful single. Bre's pretty much summed it up in the above post.
June 1, 201312 yr Not 100 % sure, but all # 1s in 20+ countries are fake, because the most countries don't have any official music chart, which based on sales / downloads. I heard only about the official charts in these countries : 1. United States 2. Canada 3. Japan 4. Australia 5. New Zealand 6. United Kingdom 7. Ireland 8. Germany 9. Austria 10. Switzerland 11. Netherlands 12. Belgium (Flanders and Wallonia) 13. Norway 14. Sweden 15. Finland 16. Denmark 17. France 18. Italy 19. Spain Also I found Iceland chart : http://www.tonlist.is/Music/Chartlist/547/ Is it real official sales / downloads based chart ?
